The mystique of our lovely clare was justified! whats up wit scottsh chicks? lol hot always.... i especially love her ruff, darker songs like INSECTS and Dead Pop Stars pre Alternative Rock Masters! then the switch to total Pop Versatile, creative our Clare Extraordinare the original, much imitated but none can compare of coarse we we right! ICONS!! another great, forgotten song.....
@gillesnewwave sorry but that is just patently untrue or an outright lie by you.
The go gos formed in 78 a full year before altered images and even had the very popular single "we got the beat" out a full year before altered images. In early 79 they also had a 6 song record out that was punk with keyboards(they were experimenting with new wave too).
Altered images came after the go gos. The Go gos created that whole girl vibe at the beach. Before that it was late 1950s L.A. bands.
I used to like this band a lot because they were trying to hard to be surf punk music from L.A. but they copied the Go Gos a bit too much. Still I liked them.
@TheNewMusicNetwork - Altered Images had these hits before the Go Go's man !!! it's the reverse thing.... Go Go's were produced by Martin Rushent (like Altered Images) but after them..........
I loved "I Could Be Happy" when I was three years old and knew shit about shit, I still love the band and Clare herself seems as high-spirited and down to earth as ever. I love her to bits, so sue me. ;)
Clare Grogan was my first ever love crush. Still a fantastic girl. I'm 44 now, she's a bit older but I'd still buy her a beer in any bar in Glasgow...
What you reckon Clare?????
"Love to stay" is the best ever song, can't understand a word but what the hey.
1.49. I saw them support Siouxsie and the Banshee's at Tiffany's (i think) in Sauchihall Street in Glasgow in 1980. I have seen her about Glasgow a few times. I think Tiffany's is now a Casino at the Charing Cross end of Sauchihall St. Great memories.
@themachman19691 I went to see Hole at the Glasgow Barrowlands in about `94 or `95 and Courtney Love said " I know a Scottish song" and she started singing Happy Birthday and then said "Altered Images right? I loved that band." Just shows, they had worldwide appeal.
most teenagers boys fancied claire,i also fancied tracy ulman she was a stunner as well.teenage years were brilliant.relationships only lasted a couple of weeks at the most and it was time to go and whinch someone else great times.
They don't get much sexier then Claire, she still looks wonderful. Just look how all the modern girls shrivel up through drink, drugs and generally behave awfully (AKA Amy whatshername, Lady (cough) gaga, Brittney Sp. and those dumb "socialites" Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton - she doesn't need to wear pieces of meat at ceremonies and strut around practically naked to look corrrrr.
@TheXtro101 Explaines why Kim was soooo good! I love a lot of US singers but there is a certain something that we just can't imitate that the British have.
At 3:10 when Clare said that she can "see why" the critics saw Altered Images the way they did and She admitted to "over doing it". I don't think Altered Images actually did over do it. I think a lot of critics including listeners just judged a book by it's cover. The group was very Light as well as very dark at times. Just listen to some of the lyrics & topics. This group was fantastic at both light and shade. Just that critics over simplified by looking for the obvious and missed a lot.
At times I took there "Happy Peppiness" as a sort of social sarcasm. As if to say that even though we are singing about dark issues we are going to do it in a very overly happy manner. Not all their sangs were deep but I think too many judged this band the wrong way. I hate it when a rock, pop, or other band is either way too dark or way too light, but I personally think this group was a great combination of light and dark. A gray in a sea of black and white back then.
@thomasmoredamian Yeah, Steve Severin from Siouxsie and the Banshees is the one responsible for their early production. He sort of set the path for them by getting their name out in the open. They sounded like Siouxsie (at least musically) especially their Happy Birthday album.
I thought they were great. I thought Claire was incredibly cute and still is. I heard of them in the US through MTV in the early 1980s. I thought they had a great sound and liked their songs. I get a kick out of people criticizing them for being too up beat. You could say the same thing about the Go-Gos or other bands of the time. Give me a break. What did you accomplish at 19 or 20? I loved all the new wave music of that time. It was a great time to come of age.
Altered Images was such a fun, enjoyable band in the early 80's. Claire Grogan has such a sweet, pixie-ish quality about her, that it's impossible not to love her. She's still a beauty, too.
She's got genuine good looks. Not like these manufactured sterile bores we have now.

I saw Altered images at the porter House in Retford with Wall of Voodoo
and actually danced with her before they went on stage (I had no idea who she was lol)
got to talk to her and the band in their dressing room, her sister was there too.
saw them the next day at Leeds Queens Hall with Bauhaus
then finally went to Cumbernauld last week to see where it all began.Gregory's Girl is a top film

I agree with markyp1965 completely.
No matter what she wears or says she always looks and seems so feminine an charming.
Sure, her accent is cute - but she would be 'cute' even if she had a Russian one (I bet).
