They were heavy, and even doomish, but Doom originated with bands like Black Sabbath, Candlemass, and Pentagram. These bands are really the 'Gods of Doom'. Many Doom Metal bands now are infuences by bands like My Dying Bride, Anathema, Winter, and Paradise Lost. In that sense, My Dying Bride, and these bands, are what I consider the fathers of Doom Metal.
