1) Nuttville is a total jam, I LOVE IT! 2) Being one who played the song before and knows the phrasing well, he's killing it on both the jazz and latin feel. 3) The fact that he put in the double pedal rock edge and it FITS LIKE A DREAM only show's that this guy belongs among the greats. I'm looking up more stuff of him RIGHT NOW!
Unequivocally, one of the tastiest drummers ever to grace the skins. I am forever in awe of his ability to play as musically as any person alive - regardless of instrument. There is no denying that. And anyone who attempts to deny is without musicianship.
Thanks for the input. Travis Barker the zany king of modern drummers salutes you, my friend.
I like this music because it stirs my appetite for $2.98 1960s Vegas Buffets & cigars & dames and the whole Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra era of thick steaks and cards and glam and schmaltz and just taking in 4,000 cholesterol calories a day & looking like you're 65 when you're only 45.
It's amazing! I'm getting a coronary just listening to this music...
@JoeJacari - LOL! Good one. Well, Travis can afford to eat those thick steaks at the buffet, he's just burning it off out there. Ahh, you're taking the music too seriously. Just because one listens to Rush doesn't mean you have to OD on Ayn Rand....
Don't look at it for the era it represents - look at it for the musicality that it displays. I've seen some Travis, he's okay - can play those fast beats and kicks, no problem - but let him stand the test of time first, it will tell. :)
@JoeJacari I'd be scoping out all drummers if I were you. Ugly tattoos, ridiculous hats sideways on the head, the total lack of fashion sense, vegetarianism ... we all get that schtick, dude.
Upside down drum solo? How boring. Good music is timeless, never boring.
Tell you what - enjoy Travis Barker, learn to think before you post, use both ears, and enjoy whole lot more out there. For your own sanity. You'll thank me when you're all grown up.
Buddy played more from the gut. This guy has great chops but it's to thought out and technical for me. What i hear is every note is mapped out before its ever played.Lacks that loose feel you need for good jazz playing. It's perfect performance with lack of swing.Check out the fire but loose feel when Buddy plays. They all try but no one can do it like he did. Sorry Steve.
@BartoneStudents Exactly what I was thinking! Too technical and rehearsed in it's sound... it doesn't work at all for me. Most of the drummers who took part in this tribute concert came out sounding that way, especially Peart. It really makes you realize how great Buddy was.
My favorite Steve Smith is John-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean Enigmatic Ocean from about '75.Mr.Smith's tribute to Mr.Rich is my favorite of all the tributes(Although Dennis Chambers is totally amazing)due to his taste, restraint, and appropriate stylings. The Mantis
Steve is one great reason to never judge the quality of a drummer by the context of music he's played but rather the entire lifetime of work, i.e., much of Journey's music was relatively easy for him, so one may assume his talent level was limited.
This guy is an absolutely brilliant drummer. One of the best ever. The best news is he's not a rock drummer trying to play jazz, he's a jazz drummer who played some rock one time.
@OneSteveUnderGod You are correct! Did he study at Berkly? I remember seeing him on a Documentary on PBS. He mentioned his roots are in Jazz and the Journey gig was the only job at the time that was paying the bill's
I was lucky enough to play this exact song with Steve back in High School. We also got to play with the legendary Maynard Ferguson my senior year, the year he died. We had an amazing band instructor!
he was way too good to be playing with faggoty ass steve perry. Smith told me that Perry didn't like Smith because he wasn't musical enough in his drumming. Translation: Smith wasn't commercial enough. perry fucked that band up. Clearly he is a playing as good as Buddy Rich here. I love how he won't wear dress shoes to play drums. Smitty was dressed down for the occasion. I think he even had cuff links and patent leather shoes.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm nice trainers. To be honest, this isn't a great performance by Steve. I mean, it's flawless, don't get me wrong, but it's not really that swinging. He's much better these days. But you can hear how deep down, he's a rocker at heart! Even with Vital information. Anyway, still pisses on that idiot Peart.
I saw him at a clinic in Sydney last year. He was awesome. But it's widely known that he's so awesome now because of this performance. He was apparently a little embarrassed by his performance at the Buddy Rich memorial that he bunkered down for a few years and studied. So there you go kids, study! (He also seems to have gone completely bald.)
I wonder if Steve had a pair of formal shoes to change into when he was done. The suit and sneakers look is tough to pull off on a night out.

Vegas, buffets, all you can eat, cigars, chicks, steaks, Johnny Carson, Sinatra...we all get that schtick dude.
It's over people. Quit riding this dude's jock and get yourself square into the 21st century with Travis Barker & Co. on drums. For your own sanity.
Ever see a young stud flying around the air doing an upside down drum solo?
Of course not. These old dudes would have a cardiac arrest.
Check out Barker do it.
