@rsseizure This doesn't capture the song. Not at all. Joy Division wasn't meant to be aggressive, but emotive. The Killers did a fine job at covering Shadowplay, as they kept the original sound in it. This is just not Joy Division, this is "I'm tough, and she's lost controlllaaaargh!". Joy DIvision was like "I'm sad, and she's lost control..."
This most certainly sucks as a Joy DIvision cover. They could've even tried to keep it original.
@MrMcGale dont see this as being aggressive... & girls against boys were never a tough guy band, no screamed vocals... i can accept you just dont like it, but aggressive & tough...? not sure where you get that from.
the killers cover is as soulless as everything else they have ever done, its a sin they were even allowed to listen to joy division, let alone butcher them!
@rsseizure I'm not talking about the Vocals, but the trash style. It's not Joy Division at all. I can't even recognize this as a Joy Division song. I don't "Don't just like it", I always have a reason. I've analyzed the song, and this is nothing like it. Too much trashin'.
The Killers cover kept the original calming and sad wave, and the singer amazingly copied the slow way Ian sang. Sin? Joy Division was an atheist band, don't talk like that. They kept Joy Division goin'.
@MrMcGale If you want to see Joy Division in a more punk-rock like 'trash' mode just get there early stuff when they were Warsaw. Perhaps GvsB was trying ti emulate that style a little more. Actually JD doesn't need goofy bands like The Killers to keep their legacy alive. It can only hurt it with those takes like their version of 'Shadowplay'
@MrMcGale Don't fall into that Joy Division misrepresentation of "I'm sad..nonsense" that wasn't the nature of the band at all. They were levels and levels deeper than that. Listen to 'Closer' a few more times (and really listen to it) sure you may find some sadness in it, but that was not the bands intent. Ian Cutis was not a woe is me 'attention whore'. He had a real and important voice that is lost on today's musical landscape.
@MrMcGale so wrong! Do you have a problem with these guys or something? This cover has the balls The Killer's only dreamed of having. The Killers cover is all fluff, no substance.
@cbmdg8551976 Balls? Balls don't belong in Joy DIvision's songs. I'm thinking about Joy DIvision here. Not Killers or Girls against Boys. This cover literally killed Joy Division's amazing guitar playing, the amazing drums and Ian's Vocals.
I don't care if this band has balls, I only care how they make their music. The Killers kept the Original Joy Division style in their cover of 'shadowplay'. N´Music isn't about being tough or manly.
@MrMcGale Sorry, but you are missing my point. Not comparing this cover to the original. Are you saying that no one should cover a JD tune? This song was done on a tribute album to JD. Should bands decline to participate because no one should touch the 'sacred ground' of an original Joy Division song? Come on man. Its just a different take and it hardly killed the original. You are being far too sensitive here. Killer's version of Shadowplay kills the original cause it got massive airplay
@cbmdg8551976 I will compare this, and I appreciate what they did. But, when I see people here laughing at the Killers version, it's kinda sad how hypocritical they are. Nothing can kill the original version, but they failed at covering it. Trash+Joy Division=Not JD. And how does massive airplay ruin the song?
@MrMcGale and for new fans of Joy Division if they thought that was a good 'representation' of the original they would have no idea who JD were. My kid who is 15 knows the history of the band (JD) and laughs when the Killers version comes on the radio. He gets it. The spirit of GvsB in this cover is much closer to the origiinal. Balls may have been a bad choice of words here, (beer does that) but you should get my point anyway.
@cbmdg8551976 New fans? I've known Joy Division for ten years, and I'm 15. I know it's history, the genre, the opinions, the meaning of their lyrics and why they do what they do. I laugh when I hear a trash version of the song, because it breaks Joy Division's genre. And they did it to my favorite song from Joy Division, which I have especially analyzed carefully. This band sucks at covering it. The vocalist doesn't know what to do, and they ruined the awesome guitar play.
@MrMcGale Should have realized your age by the reaction you have. The Killer's 'Shadowplay' kills the spirit of JD because kids like you think that cover is an accurate sound and feel for the band. It isn't. Everybody has an opinion (and an asshole) and you have the right to express yours. No one agrees on everything. Its hard to take kids your age seriously because in the world of auto-tuning, pro tools and computer generated music its almost impossible for you guys to appreciate genuine feel
Respond to this video... conveyed in a song. I'm taking it for granted by your post that you have a fondness for this new way to make music. Unfortunately 'this way' will eventually kill music. The reason why I don't think GvsB cover is trash is for that very same reason. They play the shit out of it and give it that raw feel. Even though JD gravitated away from its punk-like beginnings to expand its sound, the album 'Unknown Pleasures' was very raw, like this cover. Also, in regards
Respond to this video... to the awesome 'guitar play' you keep referring too. Even Bernard himself knows he was not a great guitar player. He really doesn't care to play that much anymore (and for some time now, see New Order from '86 and up). Now, I will agree with you on Hook's Bass play, he was very innovative. He took huge cues however from a German band from the early 70's called 'Neu' check out "Negativeland" by Neu for reference. Its okay though for 15 you have some insight.
Thrash remake? Fuck you gvsb are actually better joy divison I can listen to for ten minutes then feel suicidal gvsb all day dont care thats just the truth
