In the north and everywhere else there were enough low paid immigrants that slaves were not needed. Also Americans did not (for the most part) participate in the slave trade (in terms of gathering slaves Other Africans did and European slave traders). Also America`s "come up" would be around WWII when we became a world power (we had no slaves by then). ;-)
