Moving and insightful piece of TV that no other show could match it for its sheer sense of critical and irreverant analysis of the downside to B grade celecrity, or those whose life is simply and only defined by the dollar and its materials beneficiaries...bless u Ricky
The best comedy, in my opinion, is the type that makes you think. Ricky Gervais, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor etc. challenged political views and made you think whilst also being entertained. ENLIGHTENMENT.
These 'attacks' are only comments amusingly rearranged and regurgatated from gossip which forms an enormous amount of page space in tabloids and equally redundant celebrity trollop which idiots eagerly pay to read, as they lack the ambition to carve out any creative input themselves. Gervais even mentioned in an interview that the cries of foul in comedy should be judged on whether it has come from a good place or a bad place. I have seen no evidence of the latter.
The thing about Ricky Gervais is that there is such divided opinion about the guy. You either 'get' what he is doing, or you don't. The Golden globes he presented (the 2nd one)being a massive example. People often confuse his comedy with snide and bitter attacks on celebrity.
Thanks for uploading. This is my favourite scene also. The whole episode is great and prompted me to buy the DVD which I rarely do, especially 'comedy' ones.
I just wanted to say, although I had nothing bad to say about him I don't have a particularly high opinion of him; but after seeing his work I'm amazed - he can act better than some people making millions off their looks.
This a great critique of tabloid journalism, the cult of celebrity, popular culture, fame and fortune. The idea many people value being famous in the public eye over jobs that have enormous social value such as; soldiers or doctors is rather damning picture of present days society. Ricky is able to pull this off amazingly well in both a comedic and dramatical sense!
After another disappointing Life's Too Short episode, had to bring myself back here to remember why I fell in love with Gervais' work in the first place. Faith has been temporarily restored.
That is a remarkable scene no doubt and Gervais definitely has an ability to extract depth out of his team but what's bothering me now is his formulaic approach to these stories.
last night i at about 6.00pm I watched every single episode of extras from the beginning, finished with this episode at 4.30am cause i just couldnt stop, i cried my eyes out when he did that speech, cried my eyes out. andy and maggie are the best on screen friendship ive ever witnessed, absolutely brilliant. i love this show so much!
@LordTrilby exactly, i was reading about the Levinson inquiry today on-line and the whole thing reminded me of what Ricky's character said in this scene, he was dead right from start to finish, the gutter press... we didn't know at the time although i would never buy a 'red-top' newspaper, in their desperation with a dying format they peddled made-up crap gained illegally at the expense of others to sell newspapers, makes you think what else we don't know about.
I LOVE Ricky so much. If only more people would look at all of his material they would see that he is not only a comedic genius and one of the funniest people on earth, he is an extremely intelligent man, which is made obvious not only by his acting in this scene, but also by the fact that he wrote this scene and this show.
I despise Ricky Gervais, I think he is a hack in every sense, sponging of better talent, but this scene is very well done and not sentimentally cloying. However, TOTALLY ruined at the end. That bird saying about the bikini was clumsy and stupid. A lazy end to a brilliant soliliquoy.
@blackcherry359 Why? I am not stupid, I see the point, it was just clunky and unrealistic. Yes celebs choose cynically opportune moments to show "realness" but the shallow attempts are guided by vanity. It was just very poor. And all of that is nonsense anyway. What is Ricky's new series about again? Remind me, is that exploitation or not?
@guyboxerdog The point of it WAS that it was clunky and realistic. That's what juxtaposition is all about. Celebrities not being "real" and grasping at anything to gain fame or publicity. She was latching onto Millman's expression dignity there whilst still not really grasping the true meaning behind it. If the juxtaposition was more smooth and less "in your face", there'd be little to no point of it being there; it's SUPPOSED to stick out like a sore thumb. That's why it works so well.
@guyboxerdog Um, to rephrase that first point, the "celebrities not being real" and the "that's what juxtaposition is all about" were unrelated, though I phrased that badly so it seems like I was saying that celebrities not being real is what juxtaposition is about, my apologies, it was moving on from that point.
@guyboxerdog how come? if your dumb enough to watch the x factor for example and buy the single and also vote for the pricks that are on the show... surely that makes you worse than the people that just want to make money off of the show?
@cawthy07 certainly not. You are also being very judgemental. What makes someone a better person, that they have more refined taste? Ricky Gervais stuff is not intellectually advanced. It is just observational wit. Nothing new. So just because someone is a bit basic and has little imagination outside the prescribed you would call them dumb pricks? Exploiting people for money is worse, of course it is
@cawthy07 I hate X factor and all it stands for. Howver, you never see or hear people who watch it slag off people for liking Ricky Gervais or listening to Radiohead. They just enjoy their program and get on with it.
@guyboxerdog i think we're both trying to make the same point but with a slight difference to be honest mate... maybe me calling them pricks was a bit harsh but you did call them fools in the beginning so i`ll go with that. and as for rickys humour, there is a lot more intelligence goes into his shows and jokes than there is in, what is essentially a karaoke show on tv... i mean come on these ass holes dont even sing original songs
@cawthy07 Agreed.I just don't like Ricky, and I say fools in its least perjorative sense. I genuinely feel sorry for X Factor people. One day they will read Beckett, or listen to the plastic Ono Band, or Doug Stanhope and realise they are the artistic equivalent of cancer. I am not an intellectual snob and as I said, the fans are harmless. Its parasites like Cowell and spaz morons like Tulisa and Kelly, been in manufactured pop bands with no artistic control so who are they to judge?
@guyboxerdog yeah well said you have to blame simon cowell the most, he has more or less destroyed the music industry because he wants to get rich, i mean this ass hole keep churning and churning out these shit "talent" shows every year when real talented people cant even get a look in in the charts.. which arent even respectable anymore to be honest
@guyboxerdog are you actually joking? why dont you go and watch the rest of the episode, which actually has the most perfect ending ever. the bikini thing was pointing out how fame hungry celebs will never change. It was funny and clever, like all of his humour.
@LeePritch5 for gods sake I GET IT!!!!!! Its not clever at all. It clumsy and obvious. I have seen the epidsode. It was good as I said and a well done soliliquoy but that bikini bit was poor. If you think that is clever then you must have very little experience in satirical comedy
I despise Ricky Gervais, I think he is a hack in every sense, sponging of better talent, but this scene is very well done and not sentimentally cloying.
@GuppyOdyssey SO true. I quess Kim Kardashian had a "hello wedding" Her whole life is lived for the media. I can't wait until reality tv goes away. Unfortunately I don't think it will be any time soon.
'Multi millionaires sniggering at the bewildered.'
This is a great speech, so ture, but Ricky is so hypocritical these days and ridiculously sensitive to critisism, its like some religious deity where you cant critisise, or else he will order his followers to attack you.
400 odd thousand views! 400! and you look at some of the other videos on this site that get tens of millions. JONOCALDWELL your right, every shitty celeb, you know the type, TOWIE, most of the panelists on celebrity juice and all those in glossy magazines, this should be forced upon them twice a day for a year!
I love this, It makes me cry every time I see it. There are four scenes in the office and extras that are emotional for me, when Brent begs for his job, when Dawn comes back for Tim, when Andy gets Patrick Stewart to record a message for Maggie and of course this. Brilliant!
Fucking brilliant Ricky, true talent of our generation. I thank you for all the laughs and tears you've provided me with the material you've delivered over the years. Can't wait for An Idiot Abroad 2 to start, watched the first series countless times.
Amazing scene from Ricky in the final episode of Extras by Steven Merchant and Ricky Gervais. This scene really stood out for me and showed the transition Ricky gervais can make between COmedy and Drama.
Ricky and Stephen were brilliant as always, but IMO Ashley Jensen (Maggie) was the breakout star of Extras. Understated yet absolutely fantastic performance, especially in the Christmas special.
This is amazing. I felt so bad about myself the first time I saw this - and I still do.. I hate to live in a world where a lot of people just doesn't give a fuck. I hate to live in a world where it's all about the money - and not the companionship and love from other people. There are millions of people suffering on the Horn of Africa right now - from drought and hunger. And here we are, complaining about having fish for dinner, going to school, not having enough of all the shit we already have.
This is a bit different from the British version. Over here he says "maybe Ruby wax can present it" and "Maybe it'll make Jimmy Carr's top ten cesareans". He also mentions X-Factor rather than American Idol.
Yes! For some reason I also always think of the Great Dictator when I see this. They both say im 'sorry' in a sincere way. Also, Chaplin dealt with the problems of his time and Ricky is dealing with the problems of our time.
i genuinely believe this is the most authentic emotional piece of acting i have ever seen. highlighted with the breaking of the voice at 3:44. captures the feeling of not being able to speak when emotion gets the better of you perfectly. also, gervais / merchant character writing can be surpassed by none. so realistic.
After months and months of watching this, i come back to it because its just incredible Ricky Gervais is an amazing writer but not only that he is an fantastic actor.
Such a fantastic, emotion-filled performance from Gervais...the moment between him and Maggie - and then it cuts to Merchant's remark - Gosh I looooooove this show :)
@MWcrazyhorse It's so true. The whole scene relies completely on his acying (and hers too I think) but theres no 'emotional editing' done. This is n my top ten best acted scenes ever.
This and seona dancing are the best thing this man has done. Why you may ask? Well this is the most honest thing I have evr seen Gervais say out said his songs for his band. Everything else he has done is so false.
"a real jobs to hard" - exactly the mindset of everybody trying to become an over night success and who'll do anything to acheive it. Their scared of the real world.
the word amazing. yes, i was laughing, then thinking!! my fav scene from him ever. so funny and so true.. Nice one Ricky you crazy, funny and very inteligent dude! (=
Ricky Gervais is absolutely amazing. Everything he said is true. I love how he doesn't care what others think about him and how he doesn't try to impress anyone. He lives for himself and does what he thinks is right. I love Ricky. He's my favorite.. not actor.. everything! He's my favorite everything!
a few year ago , I am on the coach to the school trip and there is these boy who has the SECRET POP. the coach driver has tell us we must not eat the foode or drink the pop so there boy he keep looking around and when the driver does not see him he keep take a sneaky slurp of the POP ;-)
That's what every SANE person should think. That's what I think about Big Brother (Brasil) when I see on tely. That's one hell of a scene. That's Ricky Gervais.
I love Ricky but I hope this speech was the characters rather than Ricky's. When asked where he got the idea for the Simpsons show he wrote, he replied "I've always been fascinated with reality game shows but I think it was my girlfriend's idea. We watch Celebrity Big Brother at the moment, we watch I'm a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here... we watch all those reality TV shows — The Office came out of those docu-soaps".
@DayDreamAscent He watched the first few Big brothers, when it was a genuine social experiment type show. Then it quickly devolved into trash year in year out, which is exactly what he thinks about it now. I would watch these shows as well, not because i like them, but because it's fascinating to see how far people will debase themselves for fame. You can study that without liking it.
Unbelievable acting. Totally deserved his Emmy award for this. I've never cried in a film or TV show but this very nearly had me going. An excellent finale to an incredible TV show
@WubWub: They had two versions of the Christmas Special, a UK and a US version. The only differences were a couple of pop culture references, like the talking doll in the department store at the beginning.
Wait, wait wait... "Ryan Seacrest"? I'm sure it wasn't Ryan Seacrest originally... Is this an edited version for american audiences? Noone in the UK knows who Ryan Seacrest is anymore, not since they stopped broadcasting American Idol once X Factor got huge.
26 dislikes. I don't get it. If this is not good comedy writing which at the same time is down to Earth and even emotional in this scene, then i don't what is
@Maxie179 the dislikes don't mean anything, it's just people who dislike a video, because it has too few dislikes. When are you mongolish people going to understand that?
Ricky is so piercingly subtle that he can make a parody of himself and still question the logic of the show business in which he has mayor role. He poignantly touches every level of its food chain (the executive producers and the broadcast monster companies, who feed on the actor, who feed on thir publicity, who feed on us desperate consumers...and this couldn´t be done if he had not the sensibility and genius he possess...
I love how at the end of it, Ricky takes you to the edge of exploading in tears, and then he turns it around and makes you laugh your ass off when you hear the woman say, "Just give me five minutes, there's press out there, I'll put on a bikini."

Extras is a perfection. Acting, lines, casting and story..a very intelligent comedy, makes you laugh and cry.

..This is up there with the Charlie Chaplin speech in the Great Dictactor.
Dungarth 5 months ago 2
@Dungarth
Yes! For some reason I also always think of the Great Dictator when I see this. They both say im 'sorry' in a sincere way. Also, Chaplin dealt with the problems of his time and Ricky is dealing with the problems of our time.

i genuinely believe this is the most authentic emotional piece of acting i have ever seen. highlighted with the breaking of the voice at 3:44. captures the feeling of not being able to speak when emotion gets the better of you perfectly. also, gervais / merchant character writing can be surpassed by none. so realistic.
timscellison 6 months ago 2
After months and months of watching this, i come back to it because its just incredible Ricky Gervais is an amazing writer but not only that he is an fantastic actor.

Whether he meant his speech or not, he's still a hypocrite.

I cry every time I watch this scene. The pair of them are brilliant for creating this.
robdp2002 6 months ago 3
Such a fantastic, emotion-filled performance from Gervais...the moment between him and Maggie - and then it cuts to Merchant's remark - Gosh I looooooove this show :)
randomZmusingz 7 months ago
"We wheel out the bewildered to be sniggered at by multi-millionaires..." WOW easily the best line Gervais & Merchant have ever written.

The great thing about the big brother scenes, is that all the "celebrities" they got involved into it are all desperate Chico makes me sick.
Songremixer123 7 months ago
anyone who says ricky gervais cant act needs to sit down and watch this scene
coldethyl86 7 months ago 8
wow..didn't know he was THAT good at acting, honestly.

you know what makes this scene even greater?
NO STUPID 'this is an emotional scene now' MUSIC!!!
Great acting.

Right on.
Thagros 7 months ago
@MWcrazyhorse It's so true. The whole scene relies completely on his acying (and hers too I think) but theres no 'emotional editing' done. This is n my top ten best acted scenes ever.
coldethyl86 7 months ago
This and seona dancing are the best thing this man has done. Why you may ask? Well this is the most honest thing I have evr seen Gervais say out said his songs for his band. Everything else he has done is so false.
BenjaySama 7 months ago
Was not expecting such great acting from Gervais, I'm impressed.

That's what every SANE person should think. That's what I think about Big Brother (Brasil) when I see on tely. That's one hell of a scene. That's Ricky Gervais.
jjaysober 8 months ago
Perfectly encapsulates why I can not stand the celeb false culture, the Papa Ratsy and the gutter press
FeignofCordor 8 months ago
I love Ricky but I hope this speech was the characters rather than Ricky's. When asked where he got the idea for the Simpsons show he wrote, he replied "I've always been fascinated with reality game shows but I think it was my girlfriend's idea. We watch Celebrity Big Brother at the moment, we watch I'm a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here... we watch all those reality TV shows — The Office came out of those docu-soaps".
DayDreamAscent 8 months ago
@DayDreamAscent He watched the first few Big brothers, when it was a genuine social experiment type show. Then it quickly devolved into trash year in year out, which is exactly what he thinks about it now. I would watch these shows as well, not because i like them, but because it's fascinating to see how far people will debase themselves for fame. You can study that without liking it.

@WubWub: They had two versions of the Christmas Special, a UK and a US version. The only differences were a couple of pop culture references, like the talking doll in the department store at the beginning.
scottishthunder47 9 months ago
Wait, wait wait... "Ryan Seacrest"? I'm sure it wasn't Ryan Seacrest originally... Is this an edited version for american audiences? Noone in the UK knows who Ryan Seacrest is anymore, not since they stopped broadcasting American Idol once X Factor got huge.

26 dislikes. I don't get it. If this is not good comedy writing which at the same time is down to Earth and even emotional in this scene, then i don't what is
Maxie179 9 months ago 4
@Maxie179 the dislikes don't mean anything, it's just people who dislike a video, because it has too few dislikes. When are you mongolish people going to understand that?
estagonandfire 9 months ago
Ricky is so piercingly subtle that he can make a parody of himself and still question the logic of the show business in which he has mayor role. He poignantly touches every level of its food chain (the executive producers and the broadcast monster companies, who feed on the actor, who feed on thir publicity, who feed on us desperate consumers...and this couldn´t be done if he had not the sensibility and genius he possess...
If that is not art i don´t know what it is.
cerdarodrigo 9 months ago
I love how at the end of it, Ricky takes you to the edge of exploading in tears, and then he turns it around and makes you laugh your ass off when you hear the woman say, "Just give me five minutes, there's press out there, I'll put on a bikini."
Ricky....you're a genius.
