I have an old Vanguard VGL (lightweight) .223 from 1985. It only weighs 6.4 Lbs with a walnut stock. I adjusted the trigger to zero creep at 3.4 lbs of pull. Wonderful Rifle. This was before the 1.5moa guarantee but my rifle easily shoots 1moa/100 yds all day with good Black Hills ammo. I have nicer guns in my inventory, but some of them cost real money to shoot. The .223 is much much much cheaper to shoot than My Weatherby Mark V deluxe in .378 Wby. The .378 costs about $6 for one cartridge.
@thewonderfrog - Good stuff! That's the reason I went with the .223 platform as well. It cost me the same to shoot .17 HMR - might as well have more bang for the buck. I've been very pleased with this Weatherby.
i wouldn't be very impressed with that accuracy. my tikka super varmint .223 shoots just over a quarter inch 6 shot group at 100 yards and three quarters of an inch at 200
@harris3693 I ordered mine from wholesale sports dot com. There's probably other good options out there. You might have a Bass Pro shop near your place or something like that. You might be able to get a better deal there.
@RifleGlory - I believe I paid just under $500.00 (Canadian) without scope, but including rings. I see the price has increased for it on wholesalesports (dot) com.
@harris3693 I would totally recommend the vanguard as a first inexpensive/great value rifle. About scopes, just about any scope will do. Just make sure you buy medium height scope rings so the scope will fit if you get one with a larger objective. I had a Tasco Varmint scope on my .17 HMR and it was good and cheap. It really depends on what kind of shooting you want to do. Obviously the best quality you can afford is the way to go.
@harris3693 You will have to check your local regulations to see if you can hunt deer in your area with .223 - in Saskatchewan, it's not legal. You will have to choose a bigger caliber for more heavy game. I have a .270 for my deer rifle, but I don't shoot elk or moose or anything bigger. If I did, I'd get a 300 mag.
Just ordered my vanguard synthetic in .308 through my local gun shop in Norfolk. Can't wait till it comes in. I've shot a vanguard and a mark v before and have been sold on the name ever since.Great vid.
@ domiNATE - yes. I would recommend this gun without reservation. Great value for the money. Without measuring, I'd say the barrel is around 5/8" thick. It doesn't have the heavy varmint barrel if that's what you are getting at.
they are a great gun in .223 and .308 esspecially we use the .223 for dingoes and the .308 for pigs here in Australia

Nice shootin!! I blow gophers up in southeasteren sask all the time with .17 HMR haha that does a good job but agreeing that its not enough punch.
