Color Wash Project

i'm thinking of painting my room, but i've never done any paint job before.. i'd love doing this for my room.. it's superb..

1. do i have to paint the wall with base coat before doing the color wash? (current wall color is white, non-glossy type)

2. will the effect be the same when i'm doing it on my gypsum board wall?

3. after color washing, do i need to apply any other coats on top?

I have already painted my walls a sage green. I really like the color wash/old world look. How can I add that to my already green walls and what color should I add to make it look nice. Should I use 2 shades lighter of the sage green or would a tan look better?
