It is not a guarantee that the islanders would pick tavaris. Just because he is marked to go 1st overall means nothing for teams are made with defense. Players like Tavaris a scorer come and go but Hedman is a rock on defence that all teams need. I for one believe islanders will draft Hedman but only time will tell. It is possible that the leafs trade all the way to 2nd and draft Tavaris just look what Burke did with pronger from 6th to 2nd as he said all the teams got their player

A goalie after having surgery like that is without a doubt done for a season, to try and come back is utterly stupid. I will explain to you why the isles should draft tavarez. Yes hedman is an amazing offensive mided defenseman but tavarez is a sniper and can reallly boost the islanders scoring. if they draft tavarez they will be a stanley cup competiter with all their tools. Okposo, neilsen, Tambellini, Streit, Weight, Tavarez etc.

Isles have good defense, they need goal scoring badly. I like how people are ticked off the Isles are going to get this kid it proves without a doubt this kid is good. I agree with you. I was fuming when Snow traded Guerin for a 5th round conditional pick, but I think even he is smart enough to know it would be open season on him if he does not take Tavares. I heard the fans at the last Islanders game were chanting Tavares' name. I for one would love to see a pure scoring talent like him in a Isles uniform. if the D stays healthy, they got a good group in the back,especially Streit. They need firepower more than defense.

Haha, clean up? Clean up what, Jason Blake? Toronto has nothing that would interest the Islanders. Snow did his depth trades at the draft last year, got rid of the dead weight before the deadline, and will get the homerun hitter this year. Even if the Isles decide to grab Hedman over Tavares, I don't think he even considers trading this pick. With all of the young support players we have, the only option is to get a star, and there are only 2 players that are consensus picks like that.

Tavares is the youngest player to be drafted in the OHL, they changed the rule just for him. Tavares broke Wayne Gretzky record for the most goals as a 16 year old by scoring 72. what more can u say. he's the next one!!

I think this kid is great and has a lot of potential, and of course he is defenitly qualified to be the number 1 first round pic in 2009 and most likely will be. Personally id love to watch him play and become part of the nhl, but he could never take sids place sorry, and especially not gretzkys. But i do think if he does make it to the nhl and as he gets older and his career grows, hell go down in nhl history along side them, but no sorry i dont agree that hes the next gretzky or crosby.

Tavares will be good..there's no doubt about it. But if he's only 16 there, I can see he has physicaly matured beyond his age. This may be a major reason for his quick success. I think he won't much improve on what he's done (although it surely is good enough for the NHL already) but it is far too early to call him the next Crosby of Gretzky.

sids records are all for being the youngest to do this that or the other, no one is ever going to touch 50 in 39, 2,000 points, 200 points in a season or 199 by lemieux, hell i could list records all damn day and it wont matter. goalies were stand up and fell on their asses in gretzkys day. sid will be lucky to achieve 150-170 points every year in his career (wont happen because goaltending now is too good) and it wont be enough.
