It was one of those situations where you simply react. I shot for as long as I could and then led the team back onto the trail. Punching through thigh deep snow while my friend yelled at me to hurry was humorous. They are bigger, and their head looks larger, when you see them up close.

No doubt about that. We elected not to wait for them to form a circle. In fact one of the dogs lunged at the musk ox as we passed. In the moment we were only concerned with getting the dogs on the back on the trail and continuing on the run.
musk are mainly an animal that defends itself if attacked, they obviously weren't threatened by you.
