I heard both Sills and Peters hundreds of times, and I never found their voices particularly similar. Both were unmistakeable and unforgettable. Happy birthday dear Roberta! Thank you for hundreds of performances filled with sweet, creamy tone, dazzling staccati and brilliant fioriture. For your beauty and charm, for your talent and superb musicianship and for the hard work you did to make this package all come together. Brava forever. We love you!
What a wonderful compilation of Roberta's art! She is, IMO, in especially good voice in the Caro Nome and Doll Song clips, where the extreme top sounds beautifully connected to the rest of the voice. She was a comitted artist par excellence--you can see how much thought and work has gone into every facet of her performing.
An excellent sample. I only saw her on stage as Gounod's "Juliette" and she was wondeful vocally and visually. I think at times her lyrical singing was more impressive than her coloratura but she had high notes to spare
When in 1963 she sings Juliette's Waltz Aria at 5:38 to 6:54 - her tone reminds me of Beverly Sills. ISills became established after Roberta Peters in the 1970's so it's Sills who was inspired by Peters. Sills admired Roberta Peters and probably borrowed some of her stuff! I love them both!
@Greatfan Roberta Peters sang Una Voce Poco Fa in the key of F and the final note was a high F. The published vocal score has this aria in the key of E. Most high coloraturas transpose this aria up a half tone, which tradition was begun by Jenny Lind.
Many thanks Roberta, that of transposing half a tone I think I read it when I was about 12, and forgot it, mainly because I did not now what transposing and semitones were LOLOLOL !!! Thanks for the data.
last night we saw a video of her on the classics channel doing a very sweet and short song called "Little Star'. I was hoping to find it on youtube, oh, the sparkling high notes...
first of all, who could hate you for posting all these amazing videos? and what could "hateful people" possibly do so that your account gets terminated? :O
I grew up watching her on Ed Sullivan, Bell Telephone hour, etc... I loved seeing the earlier b/w clips from the 50s. As to her Lakme...the Met really missed the boat on this one. They should have revived the Lily Pons production as a starring vehicle for Peters. She was well known through TV appearances, etc. - she was perfect for the role vocally - and she would have ROCKED the costumes!

Thank You(a big thank you) for this amazing compilation!
I knew she had a wonderful voice, but now I have to change that to GREAT voice.
I first discovered her on a Magic Flute conducted by Bohm, she was(obviously) an amazing Queen of the Night.
I don't remember her singing in London, did she restrict herself to the US?
At least we can recapture her on CD and video/DVD.
She is 80 now and has(it seems) never officially retired.
Good for her.

Flautist needed to get closer to the mic. Just a technical note. Beautiful singing.

@MastersoftheOpera you are correct, there is a great similarity to the tone of Sills and Peters. Good observation, both amazing.
