But what about Cult leaders? Their cause is themselves. Yet people follow them. I guess cause they somehow trick people into thinking they are really committed to something else, and the only way you can be as committed is to be committed THROUGH the leader.

Cults are more complicated than that.

Unless they are in the leader's closest inner circle, they are not aware that they are a member of a "cult".

There is a gradual deception, desensitization, and indoctrination, combined with the fact of all the "good" things the cult may be doing.

Cults don't consider themselves cults either. It never really crosses the member's minds, or if it does, they are somehow able to justify the questionable situation or behavior to themselves.

I get the feeling that the fact that "if you can't reach people regardless of what or why your doing something no one will follow you" is largely being ignored. I'm sorry but Charisma does matter it's just not the only thing that matters.

@rogueremis Charisma is a way to GET someone to follow you lead. Charisma sparks CURIOSITY.

Conviction is a way to KEEP them following your lead. Conviction breeds BELIEF.

Unlike charisma, conviction(a much better word than zealotry) cannot be reliably faked. Even people that don't realize this consciously are able to can feel it. That's why it works.

@Reddsplinter My point is unless you have the charisma to get someone to follow your lead the conviction won't even matter because you won't have anything to keep in the first place. Charisma matters it's just not the only thing that matters. If you have charisma but no conviction then you won't be able to keep jack shit.

@frankylovesyall It's phycology. People don't want to lead because they are afraid. What if I screw up? What if people hate me? What if... They don't want to lead because they don't realize the truth. They follow because they are afraid, and that is what I try waking people out of. The blindness of following blindly. I follow, but only until the leader makes a mistake. Then I take the lead and fix it if it can be fixed. We are afraid, and that is why we let the fearless lead us.

@frankylovesyall Well said! I've told people for years that leadership often happens for only one reason: someone decides to stop waiting for others to lead. And yes, real leaders take responsibility as well as authority.

This is, ironically, why I think leadership is overrated. Too often we hear of people wanting to be leaders so they can get recognition and prestige without caring about the actual endeavor.

There's certainly something to be said about being a good follower.

A leader is someone you listen to because of an authority figure, being the boss, etc. Those who lead, inspire us. And the inspired followers will work tirelessly not just for a paycheck, but for the cause.
