  • Hi, I'd like to recommend one song ....pls do checkout the song 'Dheem Ta Dare Dani' from the Hindi Movie 'Takshak' composed by A R Rahman..Its perfect for your style...Thanx

  • @dashish80: Great recommendation - I love that song! I did a dance to it last year, but I don't think anyone caught it on film... maybe next time...! Thanks!!

  • WOW....That was brilliant....is this the only style u do or there are other styles...why dont u try something other than that of Bharatnatyam or classical types...why dont u try the common Indian style which is the cinematic dance of course if u have company it would be great......lot of great songs to perform especially the west is now really opening up to Indian dance and songs...u can be a great success!

  • @dashish80: Thanks so much for your support and your great advice. I actually grew up doing Bollywood dance at school in India, and was then compelled to study a classical discipline; as you can see, I chose Bharatanatyam. My own choreography (such as the movements in 'The Birth of Joy', above) pulls from both classical & contemporary Indian dance, as well as from my very limited training in lyrical ballet/modern... and that's my favorite combo so far. :) Thanks again for your comment!

  • @JaiKhalsa Thank you so much for your reply...so kind of you :)...I have a request...if u can find some time to teach our culture and art to the youngsters in your area it would be so grateful...especially with this 'Bollywood' thing going on I'm sure there will be a couple of young girls who are interested in learning from you..you know there are a lot of good things good stories songs dance we have to share with other parts of the world people like you are the ones who can really help us :)..

  • @dashish80: These days I don't stay in one place long enough to set up regular classes... but, as it turns out, there are already a lot of people teaching Indian dance forms here in the U.S., and even around Europe. As you said, since Bollywood is a big hit everywhere, people are very receptive. The stories are definitely being shared. :)

  • Very nice

  • @ksmanjunatha: Thanks!

  • Hi Jai..Thank u for embracing Indian Culture and Art..We Love You...BTW...'Bombay Theme' and 'Alaipayuthe' are the only two A R Rahman songs I found u perform..I'd love to see more performances on A R Rahman songs....'Kannodu Kaanpadellam' from the tamil movie 'Jeans' would be wonderful..Pls upload more A R Rahman song performances...keep up the good work...God Bless You

  • @samirseth85: Thank you so much! A.R. Rahman is one of my favorites - if I had time and energy, I'd have choreographed a dance to every single one of his songs! But he's very prolific, so that would be a lot of work... :) I'll be sure to check out the soundtrack for 'Jeans', though; thanks for the recommendation!

  • @jimparackal: Thank you so much! I do know some other styles - a little ballet, some salsa, pieces of Persian - but this is where my heart is. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

  • its an indian Tamil Song.

  • @gizfire: Very correct. We had a typo in the video, and only realized it after it was too late to correct. I made sure to put A.R. Rahman's name in the description below the video... thanks!

  • Jai you are a perfect combination of dignity, grace, beauty and talent. This is an awesome performance. Your expressive face can convey it all. Loved it.

  • Hi, I am very glad to see your dancing, especially BharataNatyam. Every expression of yours is simply superb. Do you also give stage performances? in UK anytime?

  • @Rootkit2007: Thank you! I did more stage performances when I was living on the East coast of the U.S.; lately it's been more special events than anything else. I hope to be in the UK some time soon - we'll see if it comes together - stay tuned! ;)

  • @JaiKhalsa you are dancing too good. But you have to improve the art of expression. Its too important in any indian classical dances. You can become crowd puller if you improve in the area of expressions. The expressions include the eyes, the mouth, the posture, the shyness. Its should be feminine in nature. Sorry if my comments have hurt you. But you dance superb.

  • @MrHowlate: Thank you for your kind words, and, most of all, thank you for your constructive criticism. I am always open to feedback, and your observations are spot on. I appreciate it. Many blessings!

  • @JaiKhalsa hiiiii can you please send me link of your new dance. I want to see how well you have been performing. I feel gratitude that you have replied me. God bless you.

  • @MrHowlate: Hi! Nice to see your name pop up again. :) The new videos aren't edited yet, but I will be sure to put them up when they are. And if you're subscribed to this channel, I know YouTube will let you know when they arrive. Thanks for thinking of me!

  • hi jai..

I'm an indian, who had the bad luck of having to stop my dance classes at a young age. I still wanna learn, but am 23 and something's says its too late to start off.. Anyways, I loved the way you have learnt and composed this performance and i want u to keep doing more. u're an amazing dancer. loved ur expressions, the costume and the mood of the song. U could've gone for large blue earrings as it would've defined your face a lil more.. ha ha .. All the best.

  • @swatigemini: Thank you so much for your kind words of support! And yeah, I do need a pair of blue earrings... ;)

As for your dance aspirations, go for it! It's never too late to start, honestly! Do it today - tomorrow - soon! And post videos!! :)

  • @mrmeh6969: Hey there. I know you removed this after you wrote it, but I get emails with all the comments and still wanted to reply to your opinion... it's funny, I didn't even realize how many A.R. Rahman pieces I've worked on! There are others that aren't posted on YouTube... I guess I'm just really moved by his music! Thanks for the feedback, though. I appreciate it.

  • god i am so sorry Miss Jai. Akshaye singh is my idiot brother in law i married a nice indian man but his brother turned out to be such a racial monster i am sorry my family shames me i am really embarrassed please don't be angry with me

  • I'm not angry, I promise. All is well. No worries. :)

  • The classical pieces of bharatanatyam were very well executed...respect to you from an Indian dancer for indulging in another culture and learning it so keenly when most Indians are avoiding it and going after popular music and dance. Ignore the ignorance of some posts out here. I know how much dedication it takes to learn what you have.

  • Thank you for these extremely kind words, and for your support. I love what I do, and am honored to have opportunities to do it; and your encouragement makes life even sweeter! Much appreciated. :)

  • stick to your own dang culture gosh u are white we r indian get that in ur pretty little head sweet heart, hey no lie u are good but it's weird i mena weird cuz i know your mom and dad didn't name u jai khalsa ok. from: Akshaye Singh

  • Even though we've already sorted out the fact that this comment wasn't posted by the owner of this YouTube account (the conversation exists on another video...), I won't be deleting it, cause, hey, it's a valid opinion. But I will mention that my name, Jai Jagdesh Kaur Khalsa, was given to me at birth. And I quite like it! :)

  • ur expressions r awesome....great

  • Thank you so very much!!

  • wow!

    that is absolutely beautiful

the way u have mixed some ur own touches to bharatanatyam

how long have u bn learning?

  • Thank you, my dear! I appreciate your support!

Started studying formally in 1999; began choreographing in 2001. This piece is from a few years ago, and it's my very favorite of everything I've ever done. ;)

  • I don't know, really. That's up to you and how much time you can give daily to a rehearsal process.....

  • Comment removed

  • i really like how you've changed this song into a classical perspective :D

  • Thanks! It's my very favorite of all the things I've done. And it remains my most popular one with audiences any time I perform! ;)

  • hey Jai .. Ive watched all the videos youve posted. They were all wonderful. All the very best. I want to make a correction in the video info for this one. The Bombay Theme was composed by A.R. Rahman (yea the Slumdog Oscar winner), not Talvin SIngh. Vazthukkal (Best wishes in tamil).

  • Hi there! Thank you for your kind words!

As for the music credit: I know the "info" page at the start of the video is wrong (it says 'Bjork' - there was a graphics error and I've never bothered to have it fixed), but I was under the impression it was Talvin Singh's track because it's on his album 'Anokha'. I knew Rahman had done the 'Bombay' soundtrack, but I was confused..... until now! I just saw on wikipedia that 'Anokha' is a compilation..... and Rahman is listed as the artist. Whoops!

  • Vazthukkal to you too! ;)

  • aww ur is so sweet :)

  • In the name of our Lordess Durga and with full respect to your Deity, sorrow to get joy, i don't think so, my Lady loves jokes in any occasion, why not do You see Nitya or Master Hari Om dancing Ta Ra De, from Vamana Avatara to your hart a full Namascar.

  • Thank you for your beautiful e-mails and the videos you've sent to me. I've enjoyed them very much.

  • That is just beautiful. That is a remarkable piece, I think the ending is perfect. Plant it in your heart, it grows and you spread it around like dandelion seed. I couldn't hear your gasps, are they there and I am deaf?

  • They're there; barely audible.

    Or you're going deaf.

Good thing for text messaging..... ;)

  • You rock!!!
