To be honest, your really over thinking it. The term "world champion" doesn't at all imply that North American teams are somehow better than any other country.

The phrase was first used in the Major Leagues to describe the winners of the World Series, which is it's championship series. The term just kind of spread to other sports.

Besides, the NBA and MLB are filled with international players, which can't be said for leagues in other countries.
