I totally agree with you. When Quebec and Winnipeg left, nothing was done by the league to save them. When Phoenix was going to be sold to Jim Balsillie, so he could move the team to Hamilton, the league took every measure to prevent it. Bettman's defense of Phoenix staying put was him saying it's unfair to yank teams out of their hometowns. Makes me wonder why he didn't say that and fight harder for Quebec and Winnipeg?

I was a new hockey fan back in '94. Steve Larmer was a fixture here in Chicago for the Blackhawks, and I and other local fans were happy for him in winning the Cup with the Rangers.

I can tell you we Chicagoans were happier with the Rangers winning the Stanley Cup than the Knicks trying to beat the Bulls in the NBA playoffs. At least the Rangers won with grit and class...not like the Knicks trying to beat up the Bulls and win.

Great year for both teams, but look at some of the magic the Rangers produced: Messier predicting victory, then going out and singlehandedly winning game 6 against the Devils, Matteau's OT goal, Richter's save on Bure...when big market teams win, it's better for the sport. 1994 was a great year for the NHL, and it was largely due to the Rangers' success. Then the people of Vancouver disgraced themselves by rioting...bunch of sore losers.

Rangers were the best team in the NHL that year, that's why they deserved to win. The fact that they ended such a long drought just added to the Ranger fan's happiness.
