just watched tavis smiley with nile rodgers (who co-wrote the song) who said he got the idea for it at a transvestite bar when he realized that diana should acknowledge the icon that she is to the gay community. so yes, "coming out" was a gay term, but so new that that wasn't its exclusive meaning.

"coming out" (again according to rodgers) also referred to diana leaving motown for rca and the next stage of her career. the song means whatever you want it to.
