  • Sweet...close one of my favorite jb tunes...sweet

  • goodness....gracias

  • lol he looks like Allen Iverson in this pic

anyways great cover, ?uestlove on the drums

  • oooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sexy baby

  • OMG.. This is an EXCELLENT Cover. I say if the drummer can ACTUALLY sound CLOSE to Clyde Stubblefield, then he's awesome!

  • TURN OVA!!

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS. BIG UPS TO D'ANGELO FOR THIS. BEEN LISTENING TO THIS TUNE SINCE THE 70'S. WELL DONE YOUNG BLOOD!!!!

  • i def feel that james brown vibe

  • jamessss brown...

  • never knew this existed. i'm a huge fan of the Godfather, and this is hot!

  • Channeling James Brown

  • Classic. D got all JB's inflections and Ahmir is fully in the pocket on Clyde's drum patterns. True talent and skills.

  • Ridiculously badass mutha fu#%as

  • man... I got no words... damn... i woulda thought that was clyde on the set himself!.. lol ?uest knows he got that shyt so tight inside the pocket it's bananas!!!.... all three of'em are gettin off!..

  • i am a HUGE james brown fan and i really enjoyed this; d'angelo and questlove together is a great show and goodtime!

  • i love this!!! it is so sick when some one can do jb in their own way

  • Questlove is ill!

  • very heavy bass line, love it, this is the definition of "funky" bass.

  • Thay all laughing when quest goes down into the break cos its so def.....I love that, thats a proper version, they laughin cos its such a riddim...thanks for posting this.

  • Jayuh.

  • This is DEFINITELY NOT Pino on bass on this. Totally different sound and feel, and there a couple of low C's played indicating a 5 string bass. I read Christian McBride was playing on this somewhere, which makes a lot more sense. A lot of guys were coming in and jamming during the Voodoo sessions.

  • I agreed, but I do think it's ?uestLove on drums...the drummer killz it!!!

  • Agreed! Definitely sounds like ?usetlove to me......McBride and ?uest were High School mates, so there was a connection there, for sure. .

  • nice outtake shit there's some groove

  • dayum.!.!.!

  • James Brown = Soul Brotha No. 1

  • pino is killin that #@$%^%$# bass d'angelo once again we miss u bro i read the article in spin magazine from June 2008 all of his people should take a look peace

  • I am amazed... they know that song so well

  • james brown did have a son ....

  • hippest shit. i need the out takes too.

i like " go bak 2 that thang" off yoda.

  • fav some is " one mo gin" voodoo

  • This is dope. For ya'll that know about the song "The Funky Drummer" it's one of the most sampled songs ever (most in hip-hop). We have hip-hop due to people sampling this song and cutting it up in a million ways.

  • This should've been named Funky Bass cause he is killin it!

  • this is som funky shit, like always d'angelo gives me chills

  • Where can i find these outtakes

  • "You've got mail"

  • Hey thanks, good lookin' out

  • Hey - can i grab the outtakes too? D is my favorite artist...

  • hey i got your link awhile back for the d'angelo outtakes but the download didn't work, do u hav 2b a premium user

  • This captures a lot of the grits and chitlins and fatback of the original James Brown cut, especially the drums: DEAD ON THE CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD-MUST BE REAL THE MAN. DAAAAMMMMNNNN.

  • Did Clyde Stubblefield himself play this? Dag Quest!!! This is NASTY! Questlove is a monster!

  • Great tribute to James Brown!

  • Got damn, the Voodoo sessions had to be awe-inspiring. If only a "Voodoo - The Complete Sessions" box set somehow got released, like they do for important jazz recordings. I'd be the first in line to buy that shit.

  • I'd be the second

  • Goddamn... ?estlove gotta be the only one on earth who can play the Funky Drummer just like the record, beside Clyde Stubblefield...

  • Do you know who's playing on this?

  • Almost certainly Questlove, Pino and Roy Hargrove

  • I've heard a dub of a radio show (on imeem I think) where ?uestlove played this, and explained that this was recorded before Pino was around. It's actually Christian McBride on the bass. ?uest just ran into him on the street or somesuch and invited him into the studio. I don't think Roy Hargrave's on there neither 'cause I can't hear no horns, just sounds like the trio.

Needless to say this shit is off the fucking chain.

    FUNK.

    CITY.

  • Roy's real quiet, but you can hear him most at the beginning.

DEFINITELY D, ?uest, PINO and Roy.

  • Admire you're certainty, but you're mistaken.

  • It won't let me post the link, but if you go to imeem and search 'd'angelo funky drummer' you can hear the same track with ?uest giving a rundown on who's playing what from 4:30 onwards. Peace

  • you got me man, but that horn shot on the 5 at the very beginning sounds mad furry..

  • rhodes breakin' up?

  • lol yeah probably, it would sound nasty with Roy though is all i'm sayin..and even, john mayer on guitar...but this trio is fucking killing it nevertheless..

  • That isnt the same recording as this one though,

DASDAFUNK and CYNIKAL are CORRECT, this was done in a session with Pino Palldino and Questlove. these recordings were from the DAT's in the making of Voodoo, Questlove has himself confirmed who worked on what when in an interview at Red Bull Music Academy - search it on Google.

Besides, you can hear Pino's bass style, just listen

  • Hell yeah! Nuff Said Son!

  • @bburnbro thanks for info. that's the shit.

  • @bburnbro you dont hear the sax throughout? odd

  • @outstretchedarm no dude i have just listened to it again. I cannot heart a sax, and I am not hard of hearing,. Point it out to me maybe? You can hear an acoustic piano in the background around the 2 minute mark w/ good headphones.

In reference to all this bizness' of people saying this is Pino - I am a bass player, Pino is my favourite bass player, this is not Pino. I reason I know it's Christian McBride is because?uestlove says it was Christian McBride. AND HE WAS THERE. PLAYING THE DRUMS.

  • The track in question as labeled and uploaded by Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson himself is at SwiftFM.com under account 'questlove'. I can't post the link, but if you want the truth go over there and check it. It's even got an extra little jam at the end.

  • @bburnbro Questlove and Christian Mcbride went to High School together so that makes sense

  • OMG!!! Thanks for posting this!!!
