  • I first heard this song on Pandora about 6 months ago. Never heard of Jimmy Nail before then, but this song is absolutely fantastic. Makes me tear up and think of my own late father whenever I hear it now. Thank you, Jimmy, for giving me something so beautiful to remind me of my dear dad

  • nice one jimmy . keep up the good work

  • nice song

  • Blydon Races!

  • He was also very good in the film version of Evita with Madonna.

  • THE TYNE OR THAMES

  • What was the name of the policeserie?

  • @zaaritha - I think you're talking about Spender, a show Jimmy wrote and starred in.

  • God the 90's were awful but I'd take this over the shite that passes for music these days.

  • best looking geordie to come out of newcastle and he looks as though he has put his best funeral suit on for this chant i am thinking. closed all the shipyards due to shoddy workmanship and took all the work to the tees and the wear to get quality on the job

  • great song, great singer.

  • wow. this is haunting in a good way.

  • Great record. Jimmy should come back as a Newcastle TV detective. I really liked Spender and Crocodile Shoes. ;)

  • I had no idea he was really a singer. I just knew about Still Crazy. Thanks!

  • Smart as a carrot!

  • second sexiest Geordie alive. next to Cheryl Cole.

  • @swastikausa id rather shag jimmy than that fukin hoor

  • @swastikausa Cheryl COLE????? Cole is her married name. SHE'S NOW DIVORCED!! You mean, Cheryl Tweedy.

  • My first love was a Geordie girl, so I have soft spot! And if Arsenal don't win I hope Newcastle do!

  • This is one of my all time favourite songs, and I'm NOT a geordie. Just a brilliant true life story which many hard working lives were affected by. Well done Jimmy!

  • This song ranks in my top ten of all time.. my dad grafted in the yards all his life until he died too young eight years ago because of thye conditions he worked in and every time I think of how hard we think life is today ceridt crunch et al I play this and remember him going to a cold shipyard at 6am in the morning and working an extra half shift when I was a kid. Great lyrics and great to play when walking along the pier and gazing out at the Big River.

  • This song brings a shiver to the spine. It makes me proud to be from Newcastle. Thanks for uploading :o)

  • if youre a propa geordie you knw the real meaning to this song, me old man worked down swans for 20 years nd now its all fucked we used to build some of the best and biggest ships in the world nd its all went to waste it makes me sick

  • @geordiebooy HI AND THAT TWAT BWORN THE CLOWN AND IS MATE MANY dint give a fuck fuck i will never ever vote labour . they are just a load of middle class assholes who dont give a fuck about the white working class

  • i can hear mark knopfler playing....but i cant see him! hmmmmmm, how strange for top of the pops! i hate to see jimmy mime this song, he sings it so well live!

ive never understood why music is never live on TOTP, whats the point in going on stage in front of millions of viewers, just to "pretend" to play the song?

anyway, on a lighter note.....best song ever written!!!!

  • love this tune love the geordies ... from a scotsman

  • @gburny is jimmy not from yorkshire???

  • you have to be a geordie to understand the true meaning and the lyrics behind this song...fabulous!!

  • Wrapping up Jimmy Nail day with one of his hits - this is from Top of the Pops. The guitar player had to fake playing like Mark Knopfler, who played on the single, and they cut it off a verse or two short. An underrated talent, and a beautiful man.

  • love this song wot a geordie

  • Big mess more like! Atrocious!

  • Jimmy,

Where are you now? I look in Gateshead but you are nowhere?

    Wxx

  • I'm a Texan married to a Geordie and, through him ,have learned to love things like Auf weidersehen

Pet, where I first saw Jimmy Nail. I never DREAMED he could sing, but I quite like the rusty voice he has. Still ugly as a mud fence, though. hmmmm...

  • @datsyhoehoe thought I was the only Texan married to a geordie LOL glad I'm not alone! I'm from San Antonio - whre are you from originally?

  • @AdmiralBirdseye prick

  • Classic tune.

  • @JigglerOnTheRoof You're wrong! He's a great actor. just a shame he can't do many 'accents'! I want him to make a musical comeback. His albums are ok, better than the X Factor shite they have today!

  • I was born in Newcastle and im very proud to be walker

  • My favourite song out of all of Mr Nail's offerings. But I can't sing it because I always choke up - thinking of family members, places and times gone by. Yes, it really was a big river - once.

  • Worked at Heathrow when this was out. Staying in Slough. The steward of Slough working mens club told me he always knew when i was in bar, i asked how,he said that song comes on jukebox and i say, the Geordies are in again. Made me proud. Gan on Jimmy.

  • when i hear this song it makes me feel such a long way from home. One day ill come back there to stay, no more roaming

  • I'm an exiled Geordie. I was up there this weekend and walked along the Quayside with this song in my head. Makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

  • Its ok, youl accept it in time but I suppose legends never really die.

  • Yeah like it was Thatcher's fault that foreign countries could undercut our shipbuilding industry.

  • aye me too served me time there. proud to be a geordie

  • It does remind me of my roots as well,

I worked all over the north east .

mainly in the shipyards on the tyne, and it always takes me back to then. Happy times

  • haha this guy knows if auf pet :)

  • jimmy's a real star, love his songs

  • great song, great voice. Love it!

  • He has a really really great voice. It's like George Michael has a great voice but he ruined it by picking terrible songs and having a disgraceful personal life. So Jimmy wins.

  • Fuck - I may be sentimental but hearing this brings tears in my eyes. Somehow reminds me of music by Gene.

  • Mh. Nice song, good!

I still like the Johnny Cash song of the same title a lot more ;-)

  • ITS OZ MAN! lol

  • IT's on every Friday at 8:30 on BBC1 infact. :D As you know by now lol. Also, did you know this song is actually 6 minutes (well about 5:59-6:00)? Or at least a version I have does.

  • Brilliant but too short !

  • This song reminds me of my childhood, remember those sunny summer days when the sun sets and makes everything golden and beautiful. Then this song is played in the radio, nothing beats that feeling ever! Easy 5 stars.

  • I never knew Tony Adams could sing.

  • Read his autobiography a few years back, couldn't put it down! Great story portrayed by Jimmy in song form, Geordie men, ace!!

  • My ancestors built ships on the Tyne for 200 years. I feel this song is a fitting tribute to those guys who are no longer around and the industry which put Newcastle on the map.

  • from a jock the tyne rules so does coal!!

  • its a sad song like. they should rebuiled the tyne river back up dont you think. but its a good song
