RR and Ben Harper have some serious lap/pedal steel talent. You guys should also check out Thomas Oliver. That little white boy can play some lap steel, and sing pretty good as well. Seems that steel slide playing is becoming more and more prominent, which is good, because popular music needs a serious change.

If you have a pedal steel guitar and you want to experiment with the ebow you're better off if you try it with a lap steel bar (like the one R.R. uses in this video) instead of the much heavier, bigger, bullet shaped standard pedal steel bar. The light weight and the side grooves on the lap steel bar will give you much more control for those fast gospel style riffs. Oh yeah...and check out Home Depot for those brackets & duct tape. I'm gonna pass on the farts. My playing stinks enough as it is!
I'll tell you what Robert Randolph's "secret" is, and it has nothing to do with his rig, his gizmos or his setup. The secret is HIM! He is a natural musician with incredible technique and a great ear for pitch. His demonstration of the ebow on his Fessenden is spectacular and, like all really great musicians, he makes it look EASY. What impressed me as much as his musicianship is the joy that seems to shine through in everything he does. Great vid - a real inspiration. Thanks for posting.
The greatest living player of the most convoluted and difficult instrument ever devised. Don't let him fool you with the jokes- there's no limit to what comes out of his head and hands.
Seems so humble, he's a musician that plays his instrument , simply concerned about what gets the job done... The opposite of a "tone snob"....worships the music not the equipment...
