  • You guys are GREAT. What a fabulous video.

I gave up sugar about four months ago and it is the BEST thing I have ever done.

    Thanks for spreading the word.

  • the first and last time I ate an Oreo I was three years old. My mom said I literally spit it out and I never ate one since and I'm 34 now. I don't even keep sugar in my house much less sugar substitutes. I also look at ice cream as frozen lard. BARFVILLE!

  • Make sure you replace your magnesium and calcium. because sugar makes you deplete it.

  • You know what, its funny, after I stopped eating sugar and a whole lot of carbs I was used to eating, I stopped smoking as well. It was SO much easier to kick the smoking habit. Odd, isn't it?

  • That's WONDERFUL and CONGRATS!

  • I think its because sugar make you feel like S#%T , so you smoke to alleviate such symptoms. I talk by myself, sice Ive started Low Carb I feel way better.

  • same neurotransmitters, sugar and cigarrettes are stimulants, they both pep up addicts and crash them, and keep you and your brain in an addicted state.

  • Interesting analysis. Thanks!

  • Hahaha... the music just kills me. That's great cinema! :)

  • Glad you were entertained. :D

  • you guys are so anous about sugar the problem is not eating sugar... is eating too much of it. p.s.: sweetners make you gain more weight than regular sugar.

  • THANKS for your comment, but I'm speaking from personal experience. Sugar is at the root cause of not just obesity, but also many diseases because of the rise in blood sugar and insulin that occur when you consume it. I've never had an issue with this while eating alternative sweeteners. In fact, they helped me lose 180 pounds and vastly improve my health.

  • after watching this episode 99% of views are running for the sweet treat.

  • Uhhh, what?

  • the only advantage of sugar over other drugs is that its easy to quit sugar if you enter ketosis , ( there´s nothing like this to work against cocaine addiction or herion addiction ) so once you´re in Ketosis you´re saved from this addiction. if you´re not on ketosis, forget about it. the cravings are absolutely irresistible.

  • but I felt I still need these carbs to do a high intensity activity, aside from that I´d see sugar just like cigar , alcohol or tobacco, a drink twice a month won´t kill anyone, but if you take it everyday you know its no good, really, its an addictive drug, potentially deadly, sugar is EXACTLY the same, additive, potentially deadly and harmful ( after all, diabetes is a very serious health condition ).people who quit drugs prefer to see it as rat poison and that´s a good position too.

  • are basically empty callories as much as sugar a,d cookies are. so I see sugar mostly as a "recreational drug" , if you use it more than 2 times a month or so, you´ll get trouble. I understand your radical position against sugar, I could have this position too. I suffer from a type of masked depression for almost 15 years, and when I started Atkins, my symptoms suffered a dramatic improvement to the point that I was about to totally give up sugar, at least for a while.

  • But I can understad what you say about sugar being poison. I still use sugar for sport ( weight lift ) only, and I consider processesed sugar as maybe a drug like cocaine or tobacco. I don´t smoke anything, but I know some people who smoke tobacco or marijuana from times to times and they can cope with that. but will it do any good to your body, NO , and that´s the same with sugary foods , and others like bread and pasta too. interesting thing on how doctors innocent bread and pasta yet both are

  • yep, Ive never seen someone lose this amount of weight when adopting vegetarian diets , LOL

  • No Matter what AMA says, with the world wide epidemic Obesity, Atkins and Low Carb will only get more and more popular. because results are been shoun to everybody, people can speak for themselves on internet, check out the still most popular Atkins weight loss video, I don´t know the name of the guy, but he used to be on army and years latter was absurdely overweight "My Atkins Diet Story".

  • That's my good buddy Kent Altena (bowulf) you are talking about. He and I started on the Atkins diet about the same time and both lost about the same amount of weight. He is AMAZING!

  • and aside from this sport usage I think suger is not needed , I don´t see it as rat poison, but let´s say, like a drug, like alcohol for example. its somwehat fun, but it should be kept to a minimal quantity, or it will ruin you. Most users of Atkins I know "cheat" the diet from time to time, but its different from eating this stuff every day. and yes, it IS addictive. Atkins e´xplains that on showing the addiction the insulin spikes causes on the sugar eater.

  • And that's exactly why I have to avoid it like rat poison, tulinhu2! GREAT COMMENTS!

  • I wouldn´t call sugar rat poison, but its certainly the thing we should care about the most on food. Im on a low carb diet and initially felt sugar was "rat poison" too, but I usually use "carb loadings" on lifting days ( only 2 lifting days a week ) and I feel its not really possible to do a decent work out without ... sugar ...

  • THANKS for sharing your comments zegonzales. I encourage you to pick up THE TNT DIET by Adam Campbell and Dr. Jeff Volek to learn why eating sugar as part of your weight lifting routine is archaic thinking. THANK YOU again for your feedback.

  • is different then the sugar thats used in products for most foods, so if you balance all that it works wonders, diet is a major part of people its how you eat and how much. Even vitamins are poisonous if over consumed.

Even fatty foods are good for you under certian circumstances any way good luck. Remember watch the calories too; but not as much as carbs those go directly into fat if not used immediately or directed by the body to be used. Good luck man.

  • Great comments Deatonis!!! :D

  • awesome thing man and i see you respond to your viewers, im a diabetic and i agree entirely with this. Its also the amount of sugar in products, you see it takes alot to get a few gram or sugar, when people bake its normally several times lower cholesterol, sugar and etc then what stores do; they put it out their ti make profit so obviously its gotta be sugary. But id also argue its how you deal with it, you should mix your sugar intake, fruit sugars and real plant sugars (not sugar cane) ---

  • lol how I got over it was I actually said goodbye too the foods one by one.

  • That's the way to do it! :D

  • Hey Jimmy & Christine.

Good suggestion re sugar/rat poisen association. I will definately give it a try. I am so bloated with all the holiday carbs and am so anxious to get going with a low carb lifestyle.

Happy New Year and keep the videos coming.

  • Another good reminder about why you should stick with your low-carb plan even during the holidays. :D

  • The blue cubes in the wine glass looked like Andes mints to me. What happened to the DCON box? The effect of the big M'M's package in front of the camera was crave inducing. (Although a very effective visual) I had to go eat some almonds immediately. Kit Kats used to be be good, made with real chocolate and very thick chocolate. Not so much any more.

  • Oh, trust me. Those blue cubes would kill you if you ate them. It's RRRRRRRAT POISON! :D

  • Have I told you lately. THAT YOU BOTH ARE AWESOME!

  • Um, YEPPERS! :D THANK YOU ifluz! You're pretty awesome too. :P

  • you both are my truey inspiration . Thank you another informative episode. Love it.

I was seeing an add on TV THINK AND LOSE. It hypotnis your mind to eat half of your plate. Makes you hate the sugar food. You are talking pretty much same. Subconscious mind over conscious mind it is great technic.

    Thanks again. LOVE .Tina.

  • And my way is FREE, Tina! :D

  • BTW: I just want to know what you are going to do with all the "RAT POISON" (candy bars and cookies)now that this episode is over?

  • Christine gulped it all down...LOL! Or she will. I don't touch the stuff!

  • Loved this episode!! Never heard sugar called Rat Poison before. I have a mental image of that rat poison in my head now. I am on my way to buy groceries and I will see rat poison on every shelf thanks to you two...That is a good thing!!

Thanks again and have a blessed Christmas!

p.s. I am a girl not "Mr Ruggy." LOL still chuckling! At least I am burning calories while laughing.

  • Ooops...my eyes saw an "r" where there's a "y." EEEEK! Oh well. Yes, laughing burns the calories myruggy89! Glad you see rat poison in sugar now.

  • Jimmy,

All my life I've eaten sugar, sugar, sugar. When I started low carb three months ago I totally cut it out. I am surprised by how easy it has been. Of course I have my ChocPerfection bars to get me through. I have used your mantra several times -- rat poison, especially when I am at work!! Keep up the great work!

  • I'm so happy it works for you Mistjoe! It's amazing how something so simple can make such a big difference in your life. I was a sugar addict and a half, so doing this saved my life!

  • you guys are great ........you are like the angel on my shoulder!!!! ooooo and thankyou for my true Lemon gifts mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • You are VERY WELCOME! ENJOY and thanks for watching our videos. :D

  • Hey Jimmy, you're a real inspiration. I've lost 69 pounds on a low carb plan called Lean For Life (also known as Lindora), and when I was starting on it, ran across your blog. This was two years ago, and I can remember people whining about how you had no business writing a book about low carb living because you hadn't had the weight off for long. Well, guess what? Keep up the good work and inspiration. Don't go too far towards A Clockwork Orange with your rat poison though...

  • Yeah, it's funny how all those naysayers used the excuse that I hadn't kept my weight off long enough...somehow I knew it would be permanent this time and it was. :D

CONGRATS on your success and KEEP IT UP!!!

  • you definitely must have the willpower to give up all that sugar, especially in the 1 stage of induction. Which I am happy to say that I have no urge to eat any candy at all :)

  • I don't believe in willpower Tony. Instead, I believe people should have a steadfast resolve to make better choices for themselves. If I had such great willpower, then how the heck did I get so fat, hmmm? No willpower for me...but I am bullheaded enough to do what's right now.

  • you had the willpower to continue when you decided to change didn't you?

  • I've never had willpower around food. Instead, Tony, I had a steadfast resolve to make better choices than I had EVER made before. Willpower will only take you so far, but committing to making real changes that will become a permanent part of your life can last forever.

  • hmmmm well I always said I finally have the willpower to stick to a life change. I guess I was wrong :(

  • You may have willpower, Tony, but I bet you're just determined to live better now. That's strength that goes way beyond simple willpower.

  • I am definitly determined to live better :) and your video's help me out alot :)

  • Happy to help!

  • oh and I didn't make a video yet but I'm down another 3 pounds so that makes it 35 pounds total!!

  • YOU GO BOY!!! Have I told you how proud I am of you. :)

  • no u haven't lol and thank you!!!

how's the gym going for you?

  • Oh, I love the cardio, but the weight lifting is KILLING me. :O

  • lol I hear ya on that one! I could do cardio all day! but weight lifting eh lol

  • like your new haircut jimmy, looks sharp.

  • Thanks ketogenic. I love the Caesar cut, but my hair grows so fast I can hardly keep it that way for long. :)

  • good idea about using negative mental images!

One trick I use on myself, is I say to myself and others...that I am "allergic" to the various high carb foods...."I break out in FAT!"

It is not quite using a negative mental image, but its close!

btw Jimmy....I have now lost 73 pounds and am at 217 with my next goal of 199!...sub 200 here I come!

  • YOU GO ON WITH THAT WEIGHT LOSS!!! WOO HOO! Love the allergy thing too. That's similar to my rat poison strategy.

  • hey jimmy

i eat too much sugar god i love chocolate

would you suggest i cut out sugar from my diet first and then go low carb ????

  • Cutting sugar is a part of livin' la vida low-carb because one teaspoon of sugar is 4g carbs. One can of soda has over ELEVEN teaspoons of sugar, so those carbs can add up quickly! If you're gonna cut the sugar, then cut the carbs too. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

  • ok thanks

    have a nice xmas

    dx

  • My pleasure! Merry Christmas to you as well! :D

  • Why thank you kaubamaja! Can you tell we have fun? :D

  • (con't)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to whine, it's just that this particular video hit a note. I just wondered if you or anyone you know has experienced this sort of thing, and, if so, how did you get through it?

Thanks again for the great videos, and being such an inspiration!

    Shannon

  • Shannon, I hear where you are coming from. We all have our own excuses and reasons for not taking the low-carb lifestyle seriously. But when you get to the point where you are ready to be serious and do this like nothing you've done before, then you can start livin' la vida low-carb.

Please e-mail me and I'd be happy to help.

  • Thanks Jimmy, I know you're right. It just scared me that I was having cravings before even starting. Maybe just "thinking" about cutting carbs made my body go into withdrawal. LOL

But I'll get back to my book, so I can get started ASAP!

    Thanks a bunch!

  • You'll do great! Let me know how I can help you. :D

  • (con't.)

I'm just not sure how I'm going to make it, if I'm having terrible cravings before even starting Atkins. And it's making me have doubts. I can't quite get the right words in my mind, but it's like I'm afraid to try. It's like a battle going on inside me. Your blog and videos, etc. have got me so excited, but something deep inside me is telling me I can't do it, or it won't work, etc.

  • If you're gonna be serious about doing Atkins, then you'll need to just jump right into it and DO IT! Get beyond the first few weeks of this lifestyle change and you'll never go back to carbs in excess ever again!

  • That is a really good idea guys! And it sort of ties in with what has been going on with me.

I am still reading the book, and getting myself geared up to start Atkins. But something kinda scary has been going on since I decided to do it. I have been craving (and eating) carbs like crazy. Mainly, it's been the quick kind, like dry cereal.

I wonder if that's a normal occurance? It's like my body is saying "I know what you're planning, and I'm gonna fight you on it".

  • Hey wvclaylady! Having cravings early on is absolutely normal. But how you are responding to it by eating carbs is not productive towards your goal of weight loss and improved health. Think of carbs as rat poison and BELIEVE IT! You won't want to have another bite!

  • Sugar is..."FAT" poison...!!! When you eat it, it makes you FAT...!!! When I have eaten sugar, I felt like I had eaten "RAT" poison...because it makes me feel terrible..Since I started my low carb 4 months ago, I have not had a taste of sugar and feel much better..!!! Have found great substitues and have enjoyed them all..HAPPY HOLIDAYS..!!!

  • Ooooo, I like that--FAT poison! HA! LOL! You do feel terrible eating sugar, which makes you never want to go back to it again. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  • Hi Jimmy Christine... Sugar is RAAAAAAT Poison !!!! Love your videos ... keep them coming... thanks I just broke over 30 lbs weight loss and broke the the 400 lbs mark... now at 398 lbs... thank you

    Dan

  • YOU GO DAN!!! You're in the threes now. Just wait till you hit the twos...keep it up!!!

  • You know, it's really amazing to look back and take note of all the things I use to eat and how much I would intake. Even the things I didn't think had a lot of sugar in them turned out to be horrible as far as their carb and sugar content. I simply tell myself that those things just AREN'T WORTH IT! Period.

  • Sugar is RAT POISON! =D

  • YOU GOT IT!!! :P

  • Splenda is the key. I eat splenda with everything now. I LOVE KIT KATs. Great Video

  • Splenda helps keep the sugar cravings aways, doesn't it Mr. Nice Guy? :) Too bad they don't make low-carb Kit Kats, eh? Oh well.
