Now that the new version of DF is out, I want to get into the game more than ever, but the user-unfriendliness always pulls me away mere minutes after starting. Any ideas on how to keep myself interested? Even the DF Wiki doesn't help keep me from losing interest.

P.S. Does anyone feel like making a fake 3D Dwarf Fortress trailer using the Dragon Age: Origins toolset? I think it could look quite convincing if done right.

How did you get the map that high? Whenever I whack the 'up z level' key as many times as i can, it only gets like 16 floors up into the air. Mind you, I haven't actually built a tower yet. Does the game put more Z levels in as you build or something?

I believe that the game finds the highest point on your local area and then adds a certain amount of Z-levels above that. If you embark on a cliffside, you'll have a ludicrous amount of Z-levels to play with. In my case, I have a hill on my northwest corner, which contributed to the amount of Z-levels available to me.

Heh, I should do another Liontower, but this time on a cliffside. Perhaps make some sort of giant slide where gobbos could bounce off ramps on the way down...

Thanks for the input! Ugh, I started on a plain... guess that screws my chance of making a giant tower. Oh well, I have magma, so maybe I'll make a GIANT TOWER THAT SPILLS MAGMA FROM ALL SIDES IN A HORRIBLE WATERFALL OF DEATH.

You could always embark on a mountaintop and bring a large primer of wood to make your first beds, with barracks designation until you can trade for more. With the finder, you can get yourself some magma access, and a lot of Z-levels to play with and make said tower.

Though this sort of thing might overheat the average computer. ;)

Good point! And my computer is a hunk of junk. Maybe I should put off megaconstructions for a while -I've already had one overheat/restart due to dwarf fortress. God damn, who'd have thought an ascii game would be so demanding? So much going on in a fort...
