Haha, My grandpa was about to send one of these to trash because he thought it was broken, my father found a way to repair it, now im going to clean it up and make it work :D
There is a guy on Youtube, I cant find him again/now, he plays the guitar and he records with reel to reel, you can see the reel to reel recording equipment in the background. Anyone know this guy's channel?
I still own this machine, it's still hooked up and listen to it once in awhile. It's such a electro/mechanical beauty that moves with such precision, Thanks
I just bought one reel of ATR Master Tape and I like the sound quality it is very clean and it does sound better than the Quantegy G.P.9. I use my reel to reel to put my C.D.'s on tape than than record it back to C.D. the sound is amazing.
Just bought the Teac 3300SX 2T from a thrift store here in L.A. yesterday, it was pretty expensive at $7.98. I am keeping the price tag on it. Last year went to another thrift store and scored the Teac 3440 4-track for $35. All the great anologue machines and equipment are turning up in thrift stores and junk shops around here for pennies. The stores don't know how any of these work, nor have any tapes or headphones to test them, so they are sold for next to nothing to get it out of the store.
Hi, are you running a mixer through this? I have a Teac A3340S and I just bought a mixer but it didn't have a manual so I'm having trouble hooking it up, thanks for any help.
Nice player.. Beautiful. Does anyone make those tapes anymore? i love the sound of the reel tapes, i need to get a player like that, i think the old systems look much better than modern mini hifi systems... Keep up the good work and never trash that player.. :)
Quantegy stopped production of tape products in February of 2007. There are two companies that currently produce open-reel tape. ATR Magnetics and RMGI.
It depends on the thickness of the tape. Most commonly the large 10.5" NAB reels have either 2500 or 3600 feet of tape. At 7.5 inches per second, this gives a runtime of aproximately 1 and 1.5 hours respectively, per side (if you record on both "sides", quarter-track). My machines are half track, so they use the whole tape in a single pass.
i use the same size as the standard home tape and i could go up to the next size since mine is a 4 track i happen to have the a-4300 not the a-4300sx and its awesome
Tell tale sign it's not an original mix tape, the VU meters are hardly moving at all. That means it would be post-master but that tape would be digital. BTW, why are you using GP9 on an old TEAC? It will perform much better using 406 or 456 as it was never meant to be driven hard enough to print to GP9 properly.
Another reason the VU meters don't move much is because DBX noise reduction has been applied to the tape. Also, the tape was not recorded on the TEAC, it was recorded on my Otari MX-5050, which has -no- problems pushing out a hot signal to the tape.
No F in Way the studio would ever let 30 IPS studio masters fall into the hands of the public! It's just a recording I made from high-bitrate MP3s, and it's running at 15 IPS. I do not own a machine capable of 30 IPS.
Oh hell that is ine nice looking machine! I can only hope to get my hands on such a beauty. Oh well, I have a full life ahead of me. At 18, I dare say I am doing alright. Watch your recording, though, it looks like the VU meters are stuck on the bad side of the dB scale.
Can you tell me anything about Quantegy tape? I have a teac a-2300sr reel to reel that takes 7" reels with 1/4" tape and Quantegy offers a 456,499, and the slightly larger(600 feet more)457 "pancakes" I guess you call them. What's the difference in quality?
456 and 457 are the same tape, 457 just has a thinner base. They are both "+6" tapes, which means you can record on them 6dB hotter than 0dB (if 0dB is referenced to 185 nWb/m. Your machine most likely is). 499 is a +9 tape.
Nice reel to reel tape deck. I colect such stuff , but is seems that the winding speed is kind of small for a 10' reel deck. Anyway, like to have it !
i had one paid i think $25 at a flea market for it very nice machine.open reel was much better than vinyl.

I tried GP9 on my A3340 and the sounds I recorded would fade in and out. 499 sounds fine though. Wonder why.

Nice Deck But GP9 Tape I Think Is To Hot For That Machine.
trufuzionshow 3 years ago
It's not too hot for this machine. Also, I commented to someone else that it was recorded on my Otari MX5050, not the TEAC.

Nice series, the 3300.
Used to have three A-3300SXes myself. One of them was more than perfect, but the power supply died. Pity.
You can buy new (!) hubs for about 15 dollars each in The Netherlands. They are still being made for tascam machines.

where would u even find nab hubs for those reel to reel recorders and where would u find the nab reels like that
rmx77 4 years ago
The machine came with the hubs, but you can get them on ebay for about $50 a pair. Reels are also plentiful on ebay.

I'm using Quantegy GP9, it's a +9 tape and can easily handle the hot levels. The deck is calibrated at 185 nWb/m for 0dB. ;)
