hi! which picture style give you the most natural skin tone colour, like what you see is what you get? i'm looking for picture style that not really need tons of room for post grading
Or should we be comparing :39 to 1:23? wherein the footage taken with Marvels style already looks slightly color corrected compared to the super flat/washed out Cinestyle footage?
Sorry for the long question but I know lots of noobs like me are thinking the same thing as they watch this video and try to decide which one is a better style with our untrained eyes
I was clicking between :49 and 1:34 to compare the corrected footage and the the Cinestyle footage seems a little washed out to me. I was thinking of downloading it because I've been using the "neutral" setting on my t2i but I'm not sure which to download
Does anyone else notice that the colors seem richer with the Marvel style? is that because of his color correction or because the Marvel style is better?
I am new to this whole DSLR business so I was wondering if someone can answer/s my question. What is the point of these styles? Technicolor vs Marvel? Why choose these styles over the original? Why not just custom make them instead of installing and doing all that work? Thanks.
Thanks for the video! Is there a LUT for the Marvels 3.4? or is this color correction manual? Any recommendations for color correcting? I am giving an editor footage and he has never worked with a flat picture style. So I am trying to make it as easy as possible. Hope someone can help.
If you're using magic lantern with zebras, you'll notice that the technicolor picturestyle records absolutely NO data in the 0-17 range at all, it just pushes up all the blacks to make it seem like there's more detail. Marvels has data in the full 0-255 range.
I don't know if their gamma curve is more accurate on the technocolor style, but just based on the numbers, the technicolor style basically has 7% less color range that it's working with just because it ignores all of those values.
@JohanFruend Would you care to elaborate on this? Does h.264 more heavily compress the 0-17 values? I can't find any info currently to corroborate this. And if it is the case, did anyone do any math to confirm that you get higher quality from simply clamping all values to 18 instead if incurring some higher compression? Clamping to simply lose 7% of your available data space seems highly inefficient.
@JohanFruend I made a lot of tests and don't agree with that theory! I really wish it was that simple! The truth is that cinestyle doesn't give me anything more than any other picture style, after CC. And believe I made a lot of low light tests to try prove that theory!
@pgmlml if you made any test, you're one step ahead. i didnt do any, neither did i use other picturestyles than neutral and cinestyle. its just a theory, explained by logic. the key point is this one: h.264h MUST be more destructive in the 0-17 area because it lowers the datarate while losing quality where nobody will notice. as long as you dont start messing with colors. remember its an output format! but this is theory. how much better it is in practice i just cannot tell you.
Is this only able to be installed from a PC? I desperately want it and I have a Mac!!!!! I tried downloading it and it wasn't in the right format. Want to know if I'm being an idiot or if it's just tough luck...
So did you ever make a video on Post production techniques. To get the "little bit of color correction"
I am a pro still photographer who likes to dabble in movie stuff but I am dumb about post production. I use iMovie now and I have a legal copy of FCP version 6 I think. Just wondering if you can point me in right direction.
applaud this test, but without any fleshtones for comparison, or comparing the marvels to technicolor directly, the test is pretty well meaningless. just my opinion
can someone please tell me what 35mm means? Does my canon 60D is 35mm? When someone asks me for 35mm footage does that mean the footage from my canon 60D? Im new in it and bit dumb so any help is a good help? :D
@MrLukasDiSparrow I'm not an expert, but I think you are talking about sensor size. There is nothing you can do about it, you have an aps-c sensor (just like me) and it's smaller than 35mm. The canon 5d, however, has a 35mm sensor size. The only visible difference between the two is that the 5d has more field of view, but you can compensate that using a lens with less focal distance.
awesome! I put this on my 550D yesterday and it's a huge step up from using canon's neutral picture style. I just uploaded a color correction test with FCP and Color - works great
nice video so which is easyer to working with over exposed or under exposed always wanted to know i taught it was over exsposed was something you didnt want but i maybe wrong. once again good job im still trying to think of how i want to make my channel more into a show feel like yours. you are awsome foreal. ive learned alot from you. keep it up i would love to see something you have done. like a movie or short or something thats done. let me know where i can go to see or buy. id buy to support
great video. I spent all day testing it out. The times when it really truly shines is in lower light, and in scenarios that need high dynamic range such as in front of a window or in a car...it's a beast! Over a full stop of extra dynamic range, and since detail comes in the shadows, it makes my 2.8 zoom feel like a 2.0 zoom. I'm super pumped it's for all Canon DSLRs, the guy at NAB said it was just for 5D
@xWhiteoutProductions I know Dave, I helped him pick out that slider and tripod he just bought. Neumann I didn't know, I'll have to check out his stuff. Thanks!
well, it semmes preaty much the same! i prefere Technicolor Cinestyle.

what are your thoughts on contrast setting for the technicolor picture style?
do you leave it set to 0?
yinblacks 3 months ago
For comparison:
Technicolor CineStyle - 0:36
Marvels Cine Style 1.2 - 0:59
Marvels Cine Style 3.4 - 1:22

@Voidward this is true. I saw it with my 60D, that stupid cinestyle made me mess up a lot of footage because the exposure meter was way off
MiamiFilmerGuy 8 months ago
@Voidward thats exactly the point why cinestyle is so much better: it skips the areas where h264 is so badly destructive...
