I was a seventies kid, but they had something like the thunder burp. That was best because the roll paper caps worked right only about half the time, and you had to keep buying more. There was also the 'burst' ones which relied on you pulling the trigger and it would 'fire' six or eight times - it wasn't as satisfying somehow as pulling the bolt back and letting it rip.

One of the things I remember about caps was putting them on the sidewalk and hitting them with a rock. Little bits of rock would fly up and hit you in the face. I did something similar once with a railroad torpedo (if anyone knows what they are) and a sledge hammer. I only ever did that once, I could barely hear for about 2 days.

Where i live a kid could get himself killed by a cop playing with something like that. Eight years ago my son was playing with a toy gun at night in the front yard. A cop car spot lighted him. Never again!

Never forget going to the movies on saturday. Being met by the owner of the theater and being told no cap guns anymore. Big pile of cap guns on the table, our crosswalk guard watching them for us. :( Saturdays and the smell of burning powder. You can still get cap guns but it's those enclosed in a plastic ring. I have seen old cap guns where you need a paper strip of caps. Can't get those caps anymore.

Take care i actually found a few of my Mattel Guns ! my Winchester & My Tommy Gun Only mine is Green from Our Combat days in the 60s Cool & they still work! We also Found our Man From Uncle Brief case & Over Coat ! only the Overcoat is falling apart it was made like a rain slicker But for a few dollars in the 60s what can you expect ! 6 dollars I think!
