@GSRGOPEDRIDER247 $30???? I just saw this knife yesterday at Dicks Sporting Goods for $60. I am glad I decided not to get it. I will go to my local Wal-Mart today.
caught a nasty splinter in my foot a few weeks back. that awesome fine tip of the blackout dug it out like butta~! Don't blunt that tip spiking the blade into wood needlessly. For non-abusive use i was impressed with the sanvidik steel. I dare say with a spyderco ultra fine stones and strop, you can get it equal or sharper than out of box.
I got one at Walmart on clearance for 30 bucks (also another skyline on clearance) it's a combo edge. I like it but I can't believe you did mention the JIMPING (sp?) witch sucks, it recesses into the spine on the handle witch isn't jimped so my thumb rest on the slick part still like the knife tho.
It gets annoying when he keeps harping about skeletonizing. Your arm weighs several pounds, losing an ounce is a trivial difference but having gunk build up in the crevices is a pain to clean out and unhealthy if you use it for cutting/eating food.
I've never been glad that any knife I had was skeletonized! Oh, YES IT DOES EFFECT STRENGTH. Where do you get the idea it won't? To make something skeletonized that is as strong you have to have a larger geometrically supporting structure.
I ordered the Kershaw Blackout a couple of days and have received it. It is a very nice knife, however I noticed 3 things about it. The thumbstud, which has very rough texturing, is very abrasive and digs into the thumb. It is also a little too close to the handle. Finally, the liner lock is SHARP and will tear up your thumb.
But overall it is a cool knife, and I'd give it a 7/10, like you put. Not perfect, but good
Ever since i first held a blackout and saw this video last year, i have always wanted one, but the price wasn't right. I found one at walmart for $40 today and bought it. I love this knife, and it is in 14c28n not 13c26n.
@9FDproductions Yeah you can, but the pocket clip can not be flipped. When holding it lefty, it isn't a problem, but putting it in your pocket might be a problem..
my kershaw blackouts tip broke. it was the sandvik steel, so I was suprized. But I ground it down, and now it's a nice reverse tanto spear point fusion type thing.
I just scored a barely used Kershaw Blackout on eBay for $20 plus $3.00 shipping.
Outstanding deal!!! It's partially serrated and in excellent, like new condition with the 1550ST blade. Best of all, and Nutn forgot to mention...it's MADE in the USA. :)
Hey nutnfancy, i just ordered my first switchblade (also my first knife that i purchased) and I'm wondering if you could give me any tips for it please. I bought it mainly for work, but i might end up carrying it around anyways. It's a carbon fiber handle with a 3 1/2" black finished 440 stainless steel Assisted Opening blade
It says that it has an thumb stud and extended tang for easier one handed opening
Hey, nutnfancy, I just wanted to share that, when using this knife in a moderately sandy enviornment, sand easily got into the....what to call it...I guess it got into the way of the torsion bar? and I had to unscrew the knife, and take the small stones out for it to open. I'm just saying, if you're in an operation in a sandy enviornment, you don't want your knife to not be able to open, but that's what happened to me. D:
this is 1 of those kinds of blades that fulfills both kinds of cool if u ask me...Just a beauty and a functional knife from the looks of it heheheh, keep it rockin
Hey thank you, sounds like a got a good one then, I got it because the blade says Ken Onion made in USA, not many US made knives at the $60 range these days.
Or at least here in Guam where i'm working, go figure.
great knife i carried it everyday pretty much for roughly six months pretty good use out of it the only things that got me is my tip chipped a bit i had the combo edge and a few teeth chipped but that was cause my friend tried cutting through metal wire and the pocket clip got bent way out from getting in and out of a car on a paper route and not paying attention
hey nutn, I would like to see you do a review of the kershaw avalanch. Ive had one about 6 months and really like it. Its 3.5 oz I beleive with G10 handle. Im unsure about the steel though. I havent done any thrashing on the blade and I have a small chip on the egde towards the tip though. Thanks from a LEO Sheepdog here.
This is another example of Kershaw upgrading their steel as a model remains in the line. Originally 440A, then 13C26 and now, as of 2009, it's 14C28N. That's quite an upgrade. I don't know why Kershaw doesn't upgrade their descriptions when they do this though.
i hate how crkt does the "M16/M18/M21" and many others possibly not to sure.. they skelotenize the zytel scales and leave the metal liners not skelotenized.
I have a Kershaw Blur it is AMAZINGLY SHARP ... I am scared of that blade ... It took awhile to get used to that assited opening feature im use to my automatics haha .. but its an awesome knife ... AND CHEAP
I bought one when it came out and paid $65 for it. It was not worth $20. The blade was not heat treated properly and broke like a piece of glass with light to moderate use. I would not recommend it to anyone. Get a custom handmade knife from a reputable knife maker with a lifetime guarantee.
I carry a Kershaw model 1470 which is the Ken Onion design, very inexspensive, right around 50 bucks, great traction, great blade, the only thing is that it is a little on the heavy side other than that it never leaves my pocket whether I am working or running around, always a reliable blade.
dude dude dude the cod steel voyager x2 is tottaly out of this leuge and it blows the kershaw blackout ....it blows it out of the water but that is only because of the 6 inch blade... if you got the meduim or large the kershaw would be better..
I had one back in '05. I EDCed that almost daily, I was in school, couldn't bring it there, but to work and on the weekends doing work I abused it and used and if it hadn't been for my lack of sharpening skills at the time I would have the same edge today. But with proper sharpening technique this knife is amazing. Not enough downsides to turn it away.
You don't necessarily need to take the lanyard hole screw out, but it does make it easier. Use a larger flat screw driver to span the distance between the slots on each side.
Could someone please explain to me why the clip is on the wrong side? I have almost this same knife, and it works just fine for me... Granted, there was a few day adjustment period where I had to get used to the orientation, but I've realized that it's good placement. I can pull it out and extend the blade in one easy, fluid motion.
How come there's no review of the Kershaw Avalanche? to me it looks like the best EDC in history and the specs on the Kershaw site confirm this theory, but of course, I'm not bying a knife before a proper review has been posted somewhere, so if you own one of these blades then get a review out there. That goes for you too nutnfancy! ;)
Thanks for mentioning the Avalanche. I had somehow never seen it but checked it out after reading your comment, read up on it, and placed my order. Thanks again.
I carry this one in my bunker gear. This thing does it all - seatbelts, wire; I've even used it as a screw driver and a window punch. The tip is bent, but the finish is still good and it opens every time.
Have carried this knife on me daily since 2004. After much heavy use its time to buy another one. Needs re-profiling & I have to tighten up the allen key and clip screws every once in a while. But for the work it puts in, I shouldn't complain. My old one is going to my son which will most likely serve him for years to come. Great Knife!!!
My uncle gave me this knife. 2007, 2008. Something like that. It's definitely older. The tip ain't real sturdy, though. Broke it like, 3 months after I got it, and not after real tough use. But, 10 bucks, and they'll fix it. No biggie. My biggest complain of this knife, is the Allen Wrench screw keeping the blade there. Pain in the ass to keep tight-ish. Tight enough that it don't wiggle, but loos enough that it slings open when you want it to. Other than that, GREAT knife.
Every few weeks?! I've carried a Whirlwind for close to three years of fairly regular use and have yet to replace the torsion bar. What the fuck are you using it for?
Don't answer that, Hamster Boy. I don't really want to know.
for a tactical folding knife, should i get this or the kershaw shallot? i would get the shallot but im so sure about the flipper instead of the thumb studs.
i have this knife,im not sure if its 1550 or 1570 i cant remember but it is posibly my favorite edc knife of all time i love it,but rite now snapon is replacing it because i dropped it and unfortunitely the tip broke off, anyways great reveiw keep up tha good work
Yeah i used to own one of these and carried it every day but low and behold i lost it. it served me super well with nothing to disappoint except my serrations chipped on me but that was 440a. i replaced it with the blur but havnt got the chance to really test it yet
yah like junker said. my dad said kershaw didnt used to be so expensive. some of their knives arent that nice and they are very expensive. some of their nives are wrth it. whats with the prices?
The 440A is what has turned me off to a few of the Kershaw models. For the price of some of em you should be able to find better steel like AUS8 etc...Peace bro.
Well I said 440A rather than 440. Learn to read before you try to pick my comment apart. Some of the Kershaw models had 440A(seems to have changed recently) and 440A sucks. Its long been considered a cheap low quality steel.
@GoDJuNkeR Nutnfancy sorry that i bother you but could you do a stabbing protocol with your Sog Aegis because i really want the knife but i am just not sure if the knife lock and the blade its self is strong enough for that
i hope when you got the time that you would do that (i would appreciate it)
I dont know why i have never bought one of these. Admired one years ago a friend had. Just at local Gander Mtn today and was looking at one and a Mini Griptilian. Still love it. Thanks for another great review. Semper fi, Jet

Yeah i used to own one of these and carried it every day but low and behold i lost it. it served me super well with nothing to disappoint except my serrations chipped on me but that was 440a. i replaced it with the blur but havnt got the chance to really test it yet

The 440A is what has turned me off to a few of the Kershaw models. For the price of some of em you should be able to find better steel like AUS8 etc...Peace bro.

Amen bro... 440A sucks. Thanks.

Hey man small suggestion, could you go back to some of your older vids and put that great nutnfancy likability scale on it =]?
DixieGuns 3 years ago
you realize that there are more than 10 types of 440 steel

Well I said 440A rather than 440. Learn to read before you try to pick my comment apart. Some of the Kershaw models had 440A(seems to have changed recently) and 440A sucks. Its long been considered a cheap low quality steel.

I was not picking any thing apart . Just a comment.
