Carol, this is a Saddleback Ceterpillar and it is very common in this area of Georgia. I live in Cumming and we have them. Not only is their sting painful but, they usually hide underneath the leaves of plants, especially hydrangeas and butterfly bushes. I love gardening but, when I came across this creature and my friend got a terrible sting, I decided to ALWAYS wear gloves when I garden and look carefully underneath the leaves. Have fun gardening.
