Thanks for this one, would love to share the rest with others, if the copyrights permit. Virgil Bliss for one as I too wonder how others can call me dirty when I only soil one shirt to their 365.
Thanks for putting up this important part of my childhood. I remember sitting around the living room with my father and mother and brothers laughing and laughing many many times. And this was always my favorite one. Just love the Bangor Packet foghorn.
I love this one! Thanks for uploading it As I learned it, the Maine coast ports are Down East because the coast along New England is generlly east west. The prevailing winds run west to east. Therefore cargo ships, or any sailing vessel, sailing to Maine sailed pretty much down wind. So they sailed down wind to the easterly ports of Maine thus down east. So from New York and Boston they sailed down east to all ports in Maine.
The comedians who recorded "Bert and I" were Yale students who spok
Technically, the term Downeast, (New England region) refers to the coast line which is DOWN wind and to the EAST of Boston, so Dodge and Bryan were not incorrect in their usage. If you are IN Maine already, the term "Downeast" usually refers to that region east of Ellsworth, but if one is in Boston, where the term originated as a shipping term, any part of the Maine coast, including K-port, would also correctly be called "Downeast". Also: Dodge and Bryan were both from NEW YORK, not VT.
Well, son of a hohah as Dad used to say...Haven't heard these two in years. My dad was from Jay, ME and this reminds me so much of him. Dad went in the Ah-me in '41 & lived in Kentucky, New Yawk (here), Alabamer, etc. and NEVEAH lost that accent. Thanks for posting-great memories of my fathah who was bawn in Octobah...Wicked!
I grew up in The County and in the Calais area, but live in Southeastern Indiana. Finding this video makes me miss Moxie and fiddleheads, wicked fierce.
Being from away, and being away once again....I wont pronounce on the Kennebunkport error, as us folks from away frequently make such silly mistakes that would put a frown on the likes of Stan Gray or Dale Hopkins...two of the bestest Mainers I ever had the the grace to know, but thanks for that slice....it was sum special....
While you're correct about who would make those errors, I'm not sure Dodge and Bryan did. They never set the story in Kennebunkport. The line is, "... and we were near dried out, by the time a fishing smack, come along, picked us up, and brought us back into Kennebunkport, Maine." I always heard this as where the boat that rescued them was heading, not necessarily where they came from. Too late to ask Marshall, perhaps somebody could ask Bob.
You make mistakes like the Kennebunkport one when you are from New York like Dodge was. He was the only non-native I have ever heard that got the accent right. Too bad his life got cut short, I think we would have heard some great stuff.
Thanks for putting this on. I grew up in New England, my parents had this album and used to play it for me when I was a kid. By the way, which way to East Vassalboro?
@byf44k98 Same here... I probably have every single skit on that first album still memorized from ~50 years ago! Still love listening to all of them! "I been driving up this hill for 2 straight hours now; ain't there no end to it?"
Oh I'm so glad you found the video! I grew up with this too. I did another one I should put on youtube: "Which way to Millinocket" I'll let you know the link

Of course, the "Bluebird" was nowhere near Kennebunkport, but up in Penobscot Bay, 'cuz they wuz listenin' for the Bang-gaw Packet.
If it was "real Maine," as one local once said, it would've been "me 'n Bert."

Isn't that awful that they made that mistake about Kennebunkport?! The video and pix I used to accompany the story are Stonington, Deer Isle.
