It is pathetic for an atheist to define him/herself with the non-existence of "GOD". Pat spents most of his time explaining how he not believes, it wouldn't be very logical to spent all of his "only" and "limited" time into something really doesn't exist and something he shouldn't care. While there is much truth in Pat's distinction, and it might be justified rhetorically, there is still a large amount of crude black-and-white painting here.
For example, if you take the artists and poets from the Romantic era, you could very well describe them as "spiritual". Whether they believed in Christianity or not (certainly composed a lot of Christian-themed music), their ideas always revolved around transcendence, the numinous, the yearning towards the undefined bliss after death.
Lots of poetry and hope, no dogma or threats at all.
And yet... it was highly characterized by longing after death. So... spirituality based on freedom and personal experience, can still be "worshipping death" instead of embracing life. The suicide rate at that time was rather high, I've read.

(cont'd) up on the fact that there may possibly exist some kind of creator and we might go somewhere and exist in some form, although there is not a single hint anywhere that that is the case. When I looked into many of the ancient religions, it became crystal clear that they have all borrowed one from the other. The God of the Old Testament is far too egotistic and cruel for me also. There is NO 'original sin' because there was no Adam & Eve so NO 'blood atonement' is required - it's as simple as that. It is pathetic for an atheist to define him/herself with the non-existence of "GOD". Pat spents most of his time explaining how he not believes, it wouldn't be very logical to spent all of his "only" and "limited" time into something really doesn't exist and something he shouldn't care. Instead it would be more logical to go fuck somebody or drink just for fun. So logically there are only two possible results coming out of this Pat: Either you are a moron or you have suspicions.

While there is much truth in Pat's distinction, and it might be justified rhetorically, there is still a large amount of crude black-and-white painting here.
For example, if you take the artists and poets from the Romantic era, you could very well describe them as "spiritual". Whether they believed in Christianity or not (certainly composed a lot of Christian-themed music), their ideas always revolved around transcendence, the numinous, the yearning towards the undefined bliss after death.
