As long as some effort is put in by the artist themself/selves, you can't really argue with the finished product. Al-la every song ever written from the dawn of time up to about 1993.
People from this era dressed nicely, didn't sing about filth in such a degrading and upfront manner and perhaps most importantly, they actually combed their hair.
Sadly this was recorded the day after Rudy Lewis, the one third from the left in the photo, died. Rudy Lewis was originally supposed to sing the lead to this song. Rudy Lewis is best known as the lead singer to "Up on the Roof", "On Broadway", "Some Kind of Wonderful", & "Please Stay" to name a few. Lewis was found dead in his hotel room on May 20, 1964 at the age of 27. This song was recorded the day after Lewis' death with Johnny Moore singing the lead instead.
did you grow up in the 60's 70's and especially the 80's? or do you just listen to it and be proud? I am not saying lil wayne has to be the guy to tuck you in at night. However, you are fooling yourself if you listened to all those decades of music and thought there wasn't a commom theme.
Sorry to ruin your sexual fantasies kiddies but "having some fun" in 1958 did NOT mean sex, It was a much more innocent time. Gay meant happy, making love meant kissing and cuddling and the world is totally up-side down now days!
@Gleriot yeah! I'm 15, not saying age has anything to do with it, but me and my 16 year old friend love listening to this kind of music. His favorite thing to say is to count how many OBSCURE references to sex you can find. And, that's what makes this music better; is that the sexual innuendos are just that, innuendos.
2012 version "Under the bord walk Ill be getting stoned, under the bord walk texting off of my phone! Under the bord walk Ill be getting some Brains underther the bord walk This life wont change!!" Lmfao;)
Wow, just wow. The Drifters changed my life in the past week. Two weeks ago, I was a huge psychedelic rock fan. I used to be known for loving The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane, but now everybody better get used to me listening to The Drifters, Sly & the Family Stone, The Temptations, The Impressions, and Ike & Tina Turner. Don't get me wrong, I still love the psychedelic rock from the 60's. This is just way BETTER!!!
I'm proud to listen to music of the 60s, 70s and 80s. I'd rather listen to stuff like this than repetitive annoying beats with lyrics about sex, hangovers, alcohol and drugs.
@Gleriot i listen to various "new generation artist" but i usually listen to the good country like hank williams sr and stuff like that and stuff like this.
@Dancewarior40 I wouldn't say it were always done in a classy way, what about Jim Morrison of The Doors? Anything but classy, but pure genius. The difference is that the lyrics about sex drugs etc were put to actual music, produced from someone playing actual instruments.
@laura1995533 your not alone i am 21 and i love this stuff i even have been apart of the swing band for 7 years and we play this song and its on of my favs
@Checorama I'm 15 and just like you and I feel proud when I say to the other teens of my high school that I listen to this music. They don't know what they miss!
@TURBOPOE i was born in 83 =) though my dad always g us to listen to The Drifters and other great oldies of the 60's. He gave me all his album collection =( miss him a lot
When I was a little kid, my parents used to make my brother and I listen the oldies while we rode in the back seat of the car. It was the '80s and, at the time, I didn't understand that when there was so much happening in the music world at the time. As an adult, I now understand why. Those were just better, simpler, classier times and they wanted to instill that in my brother and I. Listening to Under the Boardwalk now gets me little choked up. It's a true classic. Thanks Mom and Dad.
@LedWhisky69 Back in those days the music had something called melody and lyrics. Totally unheard of today. Now it's all rhythm and a catchy couple of notes that they play over and over and over until you want to scream," OK , I get it! Now move on!"
I love thos song so much when I go to sleep at night I listen to my top 20 fave old songs from the 50's-60's but people be telling me I'm to young to know bout it I'm ___ years old.
any drifters song reminds me and my cousin liz and her boyfriend shaw.i was alittle girl. about 6 or 7.shaw worked at the car wash up the street.they paid every friday .he would go home get dressed up and he and liz would be in the living room kissing and hugging and id spy.after liz got about 3 beers it was argument time.then she would put him out.sure enough the next friday they do the same thing all over again.i use to think grown folks sure are stupid .
This song is an amazing song. It's always been one of my fav songs by the Drifters. No one cares for this type of music except for adults I guess. They used to play it at parties but now it's rarely played at parties. My friend said she was going to walk the boardwalk today and I started singing this :D She looked at me like I was crazy. 20 year old white chick singing this??? CRAZY!
The only reason i know this song is becouse my grandfathers rock band covers it , and man they kill it alot diffrent from this , but this is still good
Agreed.

@RealJeep Ok, so when Jerry Lee Lewis was singing "Whole lot of shakin' going on" he was really talking about ....um...... shaking hands?
And when he sang "Great Balls of Fire" he was singing about ............ um .......?
And when Chuck Berry asked 'Maybellene' why she don't do "those things" she used to do, he was talking about.........um........baking rhubarb pies?
Yes, all truly innocent times.......

@Gleriot Except for early 80s, most of the decade sucked too for music - sex, drugs, nudity....total campy music.
90s was a big improvement.

@mightilamb Yes, the references were certainly there - just a little more subtle back then. And surely more melodic than a lot of today's claptrap.
