  • What kind of "scale" do you use? is it like a pentatonic?

  • I really enjoyed this video John. What do you think about .11's? I plan on putting .11's with a higher action on a Gibson Sg Standard with higher action for slide. Also, what is your opinion on the Les Paul for slide?

  • @marioborzabadi I only use .011s for slide. I prefer the SG to the Les Paul only because of the sound. Les Paul sounds great though.

  • Ooo weee!! Great sound

  • Is possible to start with sliding? Because I ordered Epiphone SG Express WC (almost like Derek's SG :) - I love him). And I'm totally begginer, I didn't try guitar before. So is it possible to start with sliding? I hope it is. :)

    Thanks guys!

  • Allman used the bridge pickup on most live performances, and in the studio for Layla. I got that info from the liner notes of the deluxe reissue of Eat a Peach

  • I've an sg too, but with a metal slide, a low action and small strings (the high E is an 009) playing slide guitar mode is a disaster. even if I mute perfectly with right hand, I can't play one string per time cause, for example, if I'm playing B string I can hear A & G string harmonics made by rubbing. I tried to make pressure just on the interested string, but I hear the note I want plus different harmonics ruin the sound. What size of string do you wear? glass is really better than metal?

  • I am just starting to play slide guitar. I would love to sound that good.

  • what about allman bros tone? is the neck pick up ? but what level are the volume and tone buttons

  • Dereck Trucks always uses the neck pickup but Haynes sometimes uses the neck pickup and sometimes he uses both neck/bridge. Playing without a pick always gives a warmth tone!!!

  • ty for leson :D

  • Every time i see a red SG and i a\slide i picture gary rossington

  • Dude, that just plain RIPPS! You make me want to play slide. I'm gonna do it! Yeah! I just gotta have that sound. I have one question...do you play a guitar with higher string action to avoid "fretting" noises or do you just get really good with the subtle touch? I think I also see you using some very subtle string hushing with both hands. Like your slide hand index to stop that noise that comes from behind the slide? And, more obviously your plucking hand, hushing unplayed strings?

  • I set up my guitar for only slide playing. Muting unwanted noise is the trick to sounding good on slide, along with some other key elements.

    Thanks!

  • @garlandpool Dude, get yourself a Squier Tele or a Epiphone LP and set that bad boy up for open E (w/ heavy strings... except the 5 &4) You can raise the saddles/bridge and dial in a little neck relief... or you could even shim the nut. (but that really isn't necessary)

  • thats awsome man i wish i could rip on slide like that

  • Man the only thing wrong with that video is that is wasn't 2 hours long... that was awesome.. Was that an open tuning??

  • he was in standard

  • @hypershadow647 fail

  • Open E Tuning

    Thanks!

  • the rake then slide up to pitch th

ing helped me out to sound better. thanks man...

  • Looks more like a chance to show off, but maybe I'm insecure. I'm now how to play the guitar, but I'm just starting to grasp the slide guitar (I LOVE IT). I didn't learn too terribly much from your video, but...I'm high and drunk too so....maybe..that had something to do with it.

  • i think his lesson was more about how to control tone, than how to actually play any licks hence the name "lesson about tone"

  • 5. Do you have any amps like the one in the video with those tubes & all you can sell me?

    Thanks!

    Romeo Rose

  • 1. Are you using a mic to record this amp in these videos? If so what kind of mic, and what kind of mic placement?

    2. Is this the stock speaker you are using in the amp or did you change it?

    3. Did you make any adjustments to the amps bias to get a hotter sound or are you just using it as it is from the factory?

    4. How much of a difference in tone are those JJ & 5751 tubes making compared to the way it was stock?

  • what do you think about 2 of that amp in stereo in a 2x12 cab?

  • I've tried it plugged into the cabinet of a Twin Reverb and it sounded awesome. Makes a cool head as well.

I''m going to try an avatar closed back 2x12 next. Should sound more like a Marshall.

  • thanks! the vid sounds amazing by the way! now i want to learn slide guitar;-)

  • did anyone spot the mouse run across the background???

  • yep

  • FenderPuddy,

Yeah his tone is freakin orgasmic. I found a few more of his vids that are excellent how to..lessons. thanks.

  • great playing shitty LESSON... slow it donw SHOW what your doing PLEASE

  • Dean... read the lesson... it is a lesson on TONE not the licks. And he does a great job explaining how to get different tones.

  • Great playing but, not exactly a lesson.

  • yeah, not so much of a lesson as a jam session hahaha, and keeping us well informed of his settings. nothing wrong with that though hahaha. nice playing man.

  • i just wanna know which are the scales you play, it is the pentatonic minor?

my problem whit slide guitaring is that I don't stop the sound of a string when I pass to playing in another string, and because the slide stills on top of the firts string the souns overlap and sounds bad. Another problem is that I don't know how the scales to play.

    Any tip, please?

  • when you're in an open tuning, you should base everything off of the same fret, kinda goes against what you're used to.

as for the string problem, make sure you're using the fingers behind the slide as your mutes so the buzzing gets cut out. don't have the slide be the only thing touching the strings.

  • yeah, the muting is kind of a problem for me too... some help, anyone?

  • Real Cool John!!.......Les in S.Fl.

  • That's nice. I like how you get a Derek Trucks type tone out of the Pro Junior. Very nice.

  • LOL i thought this was derek trucks...geez I wanna play slide guitar now

  • what's the tuning, anyone?

    sounds like open E

  • Open E Tuning

  • thanks, great playing and tone by the way, very tasty

  • cheapest sg on eBay is $300 wat did u get it for?

  • nice guitar

  • Great stuff!

  • very nice

  • good stuff..

  • how many frets are on an sg

  • 22 frets

  • i played that litle thing at g.c today, and man that thing is loud. nice great sounding amp

  • Yeah it's real loud. I don't think there are many amps under $1000 that can compare.

Also check out the Fender Vibrolux. Real cool!

  • i understand that.. i live 20 min. south of memphis,,,,that store at the gibson factory charges top dollar. You get to play it before you buy it though, so thats a plus. good luck and keep jammin

  • I dont know if you mean $2000 american dollars,,but if you do then there is a beutiful 61 ri that looks just like this one(to me anyway) on ebay. THe buy in now price is 1299.oo. search for 07 GIBSON 61 REISSUE SG 1961 EXCELLENT ++ CONDITION... and that will take you to it.

  • 61 SG Reissue.

  • what tuning is your guitar in?

  • Open E Tuninig.

    Thanks

  • You are the first slide guitarist that sounds like Derek Trucks...very nice...

  • Not true. My friend does it better. And its not really hard either, its all about the feel. A good song that Derek Trucks does is Preachin' Blues and no one can really nail the feeling behind it.

  • good lesson man, diggin your style, whats your stand on the intonation and what not? i struggle with alot of fret clankin cuz my strings rest so low when i normally play, how much should i raise em for a good balance between normal playin and slide?

  • You're just going to have find a good balance to where you can play slide and still fret notes. It just takes some time figuring it out. Although when starting out on slide it will be easier to progress by having them a little higher, due to the easier playability.

  • Wow, that looks pretty deep.

I just started to get the guitar basic chords but this vid makes me really wanna get there.

I have little faith in my skills though when I see how you rock this guitar.

How long does it took you to get there?

  • People learn at different paces, but for one YOU have to believe you can do this. You may not end up sounding like me, but you will create your own sound.

Just practice some everyday. I still learn and feel I haven't arrived to what I can do.

Guitar is a never ending journey which is good. you can never learn everything, but it sure is a great ride along the way.

  • Thanks for the kind reply.

For me the hard thing is not to repeat one thing over and over till I get it right, it's more like to understand the theory of scales and notes etc. which is giving me a hard time. I'm more of a practical than a theoretical person and I haven't studied music or anything like that.

Anyway, thanks for your uplifting words. I will keep them in mind.

  • The theory and practical use of notes has to be combined. Theory alone won't get you anywhere, but knowing what sounds to play within the context of different styles of music is the most important and hardest thing to learn.

    Later!

  • awesome licks, good little amp too

  • hey bro can we get a link for the tab the vid is real nice

  • Well there is no tab for that. I just improvised the whole thing. I offer tabs on all of my dvds though. Just letting you know.

    Thanks

  • Very nice tones, and you do a great job of showing the versatility of a simple setup. Like you say, it's all (or at least mostly) in the hands. I really like the Duane Trucks-ish playing at times, when you're playing between the notes. A very good lesson, well explained - thanks!

  • Thanks for the great comments guys. IF you want to make comments that's fine, but I have kids that watch my videos as well, so I would appreciate it if the language be kept clean. If it is not your comment will be removed.

  • when fingerpicking on slide are you plucking the string with your thumb? I know you're using you index and middle...

  • my amp can go to 11 :) for that extra push :)

    Spinal tap hehe.

But nice shit bro. and love your sg.

  • yeah you can use your thumb if you want

  • wow! that i really great playing! i didnt know that you could make distortion like sounds with a slide X: cool vid ^ _ ^

  • Thanks for the compliments. For me, glass slides have more sustain, and a warmer sound, when used on electric guitar. There is something about steel and brass I don not like on electric. However, they are excellent on acoustic slide. Glass doesn't really sound good on acoustic though.

I do what I do. Some people like it, some don't. To each their own.

    It's Friday and I'm gigging!

  • Yes its just a question of taste. Personally I like to use a heavy brass slide on both electric and acoustic. You play with the same technic as myself, using the thumb alot for keeping other strings quiet as well as playing, thats the beauty of using fingers with slide.

  • why does glass mean someone sucks. oh wait, i bet you're one of those guitarists that is awesome because daddy bought you a jem7v! my mistake johnol1734

  • your tone is perfect! five stars!!

  • Wow man you can play! Duane would be proud!!

  • Hey thnaks man. My new website will be up soon, as well as a slide DVD.

    Take Care

  • I'm definitely subscribing. Your slide lessons are just so much more helpful than the other ones.

  • it's funny people try so hard to get good tone, but you didn't do much and you have great tone.

  • thanks for the info. great tone, fantastic playing! Natural distortion is always cleaner and more vocal.

  • i love the way that you play that slide man!!!! 5/5
