It seemed like every other week in the early 80s a nuclear holocaust movie would come out, this, "The Day After" and "Threads" (most depressing of them al), and maybe a couple more I can't think of. Then it just became part of the background, like in "The Road Warrior," "The Terminator," etc., instead of the main plot. I remember this was pretty good, but I think it never aired again and I can't find it on VHS or DVD either.
I knew this movie was some where in someone's file. I remember this movie vividly. Til this day, when I hear about nuclear anything on the news the images of this movie pops up and I start thinking oohhh shit!!! Here it comes!!! Ww3!!! Lol!!! But seriously I thought I would have never found clips of this movie.
Brilliant, Emmy-winning What If? drama, scared the shit out of me when I first saw it on NBC; later, I freaked out friends w/ the VHS edition (making it look like the real news!). This flick - along w/ "The Day After" - upped the general paranoia quotient throughout North America in the early 1980s. Still makes me nervous watching it. Thanks for posting it.
@Thoralmir I think one of the physicist-terrorists (the one who was killed next to the bomb) mentioned that among the anti-tamper devices was something that detected motion and would set off the bomb, so the ship couldn't be towed or moved (neither could the bomb, for that matter).
hahaha, I remember this!!!! I was 12 years old and my older brothers played a trick on me... every time the movie would go to commercial they would switch the channel saying they wanted to hear what was going on in other news networks, so I was watching the move thinking it was the real thing, wow was I scared
@sr71ablackbird There is actually more to this film. What you saw here is near the end of the film. It's about an hour and a half long and you could probably find on the internet. You should watch it, it is really great.
I have this movie, but I think they cut some scenes out. From what I remember (and it was a long time ago, so my memory may very likely be wrong), the camera focuses on the injured for longer than it does in subsequent repeats and the vhs version, so you don't see the burned victims as long as you do in the original broadcast.
The actor playing the male anchor appeared to be impersonating Frank Reynolds of ABC (who would pass away a few months later).
IIRC, there was also one point in the movie where the male anchor banged his fist on the table, like Reynolds did when White House Press Secretary James Baker was falsely reported as having been killed in the shooting of President Reagan.
I remember seeing this film on TV (NBC) as well. After each commercial break, a disclaimer came on stating that it is only a movie. Nevertheless, it was very realistic - so much that people were still phoning in to NBC (and even the Emergency Broadcast System!) in panic about what they were watching.

@Thoralmir They couldn't. The bomb had a proximity-sensitive device on it and if it was moved even so slightly, the bome will go off.

@seanvogt221 Oops, I meant, "bomb" not "bome" would go off.

The ending bit is actually pretty funny. Like an episode of SOUTH PARK.

And less than two months after this program aired, "The Day After" was broadcast. 1983 was quite a year for nuclear-themed television movies.
