There are legitimate criticisms of Islam but Forced marriages and Female circumcision have no basis in the religion, but are based in cultural practices pre-dating and outside of islam.. I am conflicted by what a person like Ayaan presents because I am also an ex-muslim but at the same time I can not paint the picture black and white that Islam is pure evil and that western civilization is superior to all others.

The human project in my opinion is to take what is good of our many ideologies, adopt them, and jettison the rest. The trouble with a book that claims the be the dictated word of god is that you either take it all, or take none of it. Also, it is claimed to be the final revelation, so what progress it did give us is now frozen in stone, and cannot evolve.

Should we pass strict dress codes? Should a woman who shows her legs or hair be arrested? I don't see how these things are crimes. There are many ways to eat healthy, and there are many ways to be moral and/or free. for chracter capacity i broke down the surah 4.34, last part being first by the way.look quran is a complete guidance to a way of life. when u read this sripture you should fundamentally understand that there are small stages before muslim man can touch his women(which also has rules) like avoid them from bed. westerns are always doing this in relationship struggles the famaliar i'm going to sleep in the couch. but islam also forseese, pardon my language that sometimes women can be bitches.

First of all, it does NOT say lightly! That was added because muslims are ashamed of what the koran says!
Secondly, even telling the stronger sex to beat the weaker lightly would be stupid! Beating is wrong period and an angry man is not going to stop at light beating.
