What a wonderful ride I just had. I could watch this loco run all day long. Great job Skip. The only thing better than watching this video would have been to be there while it was being made. Thanks for the ride Skip. Pete McGill,Bonita Springs,Fl.
@Jemalacane They don't measure steam locomotives in HP, it's tractive effort. But that's not what 8444 was built for. It's large drivers (80 inches) were built for speed (I think it can break 100mph). Locomotives like the challenger (and there are videos of that) top out at lower speed, but can pull like crazy with their littler wheels.
The Big Boys were faster than the challengers, but still not as fast as 8444... thought they could pull up hills... the Nazis didn't believe it in wwII :)
@EpicureMammon Ack, thinking of it's old number... it was 844, then a line of desiels came along and used that scheme so they changed it to 8444, then back again more recently :) I saw it when it was 8444 when I was really young, so it stuck with me as 8444
I was 5 years old (1958)the first time I sat in a steam engine drivers seat and the last time in a regular schedule steam engine was June 1960. Skip, you did a outstanding job of filming this, the emotion is hard to describe. If you are wondering why he kept the speed up, he is on a main trunk and he has to keep pace with the regular scheduled freight traffic so as not to hold them up.
I saw it when it went through Kansas (both times). I was at Whitewater when they had Veterans riding, and I saw it on display at Wichita's Great Plain's Transportation Museum.

Steam loves altitude, pure water and cheap coal....
When they occur, steam wins.

are the two tenders one oil one water, or each oil/water?
sgtredbluered 2 years ago
first one is combination oil and water, the original tender. however water is harder to get nowadays so the second tender holds more water

Very nice Vid. The whistle seems so quiet. How would you ever hear the train coming to a crossing?

Absolutely incredible. I love steam locos!
Hard to believe that something this powerful is based simply on the heating of water.
Diesel locos might be better, but that certainly doesn't mean they aren't cooler!!!

@birdturd11 not to mention better for the environment

Great video! This is a great excuse to come back out west! It's good to see they really open her up still.. I guess that's what a refurb will do.
