I think the difficulty also affects how fast you tap circle

The Default Dualshock 2 (and now 3 with the rerelease) absolutely suck for button jamming, which makes parts when you have to quick tap so annoying. This is especially true if they need you to tap one of the triggers quickly. It just doesn't work very well.

How do you beat the Hydra. I keep pressing the circle button repeatedly. But I never get it to break the column, no matter how fast or hard I press the circle button.

i had the same problem, heres what you do. As the other person suggested you should do the ghetto way, leg with index finger, but you should also pay attention the spear in the middle of the platform. If you manage to slam hydras head into the pier, a piece of it will break off, keep doing this two times successfully and you will win. You know you will have one the button mashing if energy flows back to you.
