@hiawatha444The Explorer(an Ibanez I believe) guitar you refer to is on the cover of "Women and Children First"!This is a Different shaped guitarwith a bolt on neck and different paint. This guitar also has tremelo bridge the "Explorer guitar did not.
@spider62able Its actually a Korina explorer that he cut up to look like that and he regretted it. Thats why you see it with a turn buckle on it because it didnt sound the same after he changed it. The Explorer is what he recorded Jamies crying on,. Before he cut it up.
@gtrrobster All the great bands have been lip-syncing on TV shows since the 60s...the Stones, The Who, etc. etc....everybody on a TV show except for Midnight Special, Friday Night Rock Concerts and the Old Grey Whistle Test in England.
Cream did the same thing with one of their TV shows in the 60s: Jack Bruce was clapping out of time, making faces when the track was singing...funny.
True True....Even The Actor, Bowie lip sunk on Amer Bandstand singing Fame in 75 or so....
I bet all those old Midnight Specials and Don Kirschner shows exist. Probably on YT,
if not in their complete form on bootleg d/l sites.
My comment was more directed that VH itself would agree to LS it...versus tell the show to screw off and not do the performance if forced to lip sync.
@gtrrobster Bowie most notably lip-synced on Soul Train. American Bandstand & Soul Train were lip-synced shows. You can buy all the Midnight Specials for $150 or $10 apiece on website - truly live. The Kirschner Friday Night rock concerts are much harder to find, I've seen a few. The popular Ready Steady Go! and Beat Club in the 60s...some were lip-synced & then changed to live. You can tell by lack of guitar wires. ctnd.
@gtrrobster ctnd. The shows determined "liveness" or not, some wanted the studio versions. By '80 Van Halen had more concerts filmed but bands did promos like MTV videos. Exposure is exposure. Don't think VH did Midnight Special. MTV was all lip-synced, naturally, unless a filmed concert. Old 60s & early/mid 70s you look for no guitar wires. When did guitars stop using wires?
This European show is definitely VH lip-synced. His mouth moves away from mic. Funny though.
True.....I suppose from the show producer's point of view, having the band play live was a huge pain in the ass. Set up, sound check, re doing a botched tune, mixing.......Back then people were just happy to see what their heros looked liked, and accepted the 2 dimensionality ....
VH was one of the most popular bands in the world in '80...and getting even more popular...it is not like they needed more exposure. So they probably just figured what the hell....TV land.
@tonusaitis Major difference... back then "gay" never even entered anyone's mind. It's weird because then everybody who saw them saw Dave as "insane rock legend who has every hot chick imaginable" - and if someone were to say they thought there was anything gay about his on-stage persona then they would be laughed at as if they were nuts. Now gays are all over the place and many have a tendency to act like 80's David Lee Roth... but ask anyone who was around - this guy was THE MAN in the 80s.
@STORYTASTIC I fully agree wth u. I love what he is doing with music, but what the fuck....Valerie is done with him and has jumped started her t.v. and movie art again. I seen an hour long interview wth her on W. Shatner's Raw Nerve, and she seemed very nice and smart. Eddie is on, or was on an ego trip from hell.
@tonusaitis dude I'll take the 1980's over 2011 in a heartbeat.. Awesome music.. great tv shows.. people actually having fashion sense and not afraid to show it
Per some of these comments below. This is not live!!!! It's lip synced to the album track. A lot of overseas tv shows did that all the time back then. Even shows like "Solid Gold" in the US lip synced. It was just easier to do it that way back then rather than have the band play live on TV or prerecorded TV. Anyone who grew up on the 70's or 80's knows this.
Wow there is so much wrong with this vid, but it if very cool to see as a life long VH fan...but Ed played a Mini Moog through a guitar amp for the whole rythym part of this song, I guess they didn't want to show him playing keyboards back then lol
@ShinobisZ just look anywhere on the internet. A studio engineer told me many years ago. Also, interviews with EVH from back then are useless, he was infamous for spreading mis-information about how he got his sounds. also, just listen in the left channel during the pre-solo, you can hear the piano without the phaser.
David Lee Roth ripped of Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas as far as stage antics and poses. He took his karate moves from Elvis. Dont get me wrong Dave IS the man.
People now think this is silly because because this was so overdone in the 80s but This is the first and original hair metal band. This is 1980... Five years later, every band copied this look, stage antics, big drums and Evh's playing. Hell, Evh's striped black and yellow guitar alone was used as inspiration for the look of some bands (look up the band Stryper). When that happens, you know you're really cooking, baby!
Looking back at this video, all the glitz, posing, costumes, and glamor shots, that big processed hair, it all seems so pretentious and ridiculous.... Absolutely silly, glad to see that genre and style died !!!!!!
Sometimes tho...Dave is over the top....Notice how, as if they were a perfectly drilled unit, the entire band acts like they don't notice him dancing and preening like a girl.
Dave could be the best front man I have ever seen - when he picks up Eddie, it's absolutely hilarious, and Eddie looks like he's trying not to laugh. I saw them September , 1980 on the Women & Children First tour -- ridiculously good showmanship & musicianship all around. It's debatable whether Eddie is the greatest guitarist of all time, but what I saw sure puts him in the top 5 (and I have also seen Blackmore , Beck, and a host of others live...)
@akibubba1 Its definaetly debateable, i'm sure there are classical guitar virtuosos out there that more techinically proficient as far as technique in playing and reading music, Eddie is merely the best at what he does...
hu, yeha roth in those days was very worried about morrison, lol, he even sleep triyng to match morrison, haha. men, all roth wanted back then is singing, jumping, screwing. morrison is in another league.
Just a hint. Someone probably already said it. EVERYONE on these shows lip syncs. It's the way the show is set up. I don't know if this is Solid Gold but they did it too and Ozzy lip synced Bark at The Moon. It's not the band, it's the show. VH were ICONS and forever will be among the greatest of all time.
This dude shredder needs to stop getting involved in music. I have never in all my life seen such assinine comments about a band obviously lip-syncing.....dude save us all from the next beibster - stay away - far away from rock music......you don't belong here.....if you want to come and play learn some humility and something about music....everyone is wrong now and again...the people that are cool are the ones that can admit it......grow up please...for all our sakes....
I haven't read all the comments below, but as for "are they lip synching or is this live?" Well, the intro to this song was done on a Wurlitzer electric piano played through a stack of Marshalls. Aka, it's not a a guitar. Also, it's without a doubt the studio track they're "playing" along with. Cool footage though, for sure. Rare.
@greenfruitface Exactly. Any band who played on one of these shows (like Top of the Pops, etc.), the REQUIREMENT was that they fake play to a backing track. They're not trying to dupe anyone with that. That was just the contractual requirement for these TV shows. They didn't want things getting outta control, and , let's face it........Van Halen in the studio in those days was potential for just that!
@greenfruitface think about it, have u ever heard eddie even try to play the same solo twice? i dont think they could play this live without more equipment.
Dave is a great frontman, singer and to me (though I do like the hagar stuff too) he is the voice of VH, but damn, I always hated the way he would dress like a faggot!
In the studio version, Eddie Van Halen plays a Wurlitzer electric piano that is plugged into his 100-watt Marshall Plexi amp with a phase-shifter effect added to it, making it sound like a guitar.
In this video, they are just playing the studio version while the band mimes along to it. I love how Eddie just bangs on his strings in the beginning.
It would have been hilarious if the band pulled a Nirvana and didn't even try to mime along!
@cameronpicsinc - I think Michael Anthony banged on the Wurlitzer to do this song live and leave Eddie's hands free for the guitar. I've seen some photos of Anthony playing this big honkin organ and can only guess. Didn't see them until Fair Warning in '81.
Lip synched or not, its Van Halen, What you hear is what that awsome group has done together. Right, there might be some improvements in the studio to make it sound better, but its Van Halen... The greatest band in the Universe!
yep.....they are faking....i cant believe it..their handlers must have forced them to do this...I SAY FUCK THEM..TURN OVER THE TABLES AND AMPS AND WALK OUT
Wow?! This is the first time I have ever seen Van Halen lip synching!!?? WTH? Very disappointed. Never thought that they would do that bullshit for tv.
They're probably not lip synching. They're probably actually playing it, but the music we're hearing is the one from the studio version. Why they did that...who knows.
@jimmyboy131 They did that beacuse in that Spanish show( Aplauso) were forced to do playback all the time. Other American rock bands performed in that show and did exactly the same. It was not as if it was the Letterman show.
@jimmyboy131 No, it's lip-synched. That's just how TV was most of the time in those days. You can see that they're making every effort to replicate the sounds on the recorded version b/c that's they're synching to.
@nyshortline you got that right!!!!! anyone who disagrees F YOU!!!!!!!!! i was lucky to have met Dave at big private party years ago. no bullshit, one of the coolest dudes! he is so friendly and gracious. I think Eddie was the problem. if you can't get along with a laid back good dude like Sammy Hagar you got problems. luv Eddies playing and van halen but i think his drinking and coke use screwed him up big time! he seems like an arrogant prick
@livin4fishin09 You hit the nail right on the head. I've read both Dave's and Sammy's autobiographies and both of them say the same thing about Eddie. Heavy HEAVY drinker and toker.
@livin4fishin09 I think Ed's arrogance definetly comes from the fact that he is a perfectionist to the extreme, and for a guy with that much talent, its sorta par for the course.
@TruthAxe I know you're intentionally trying to upset people on here, so I'm not gonna say anything nasty. Back then unfortunately most t.v. performances were not live! No fuckin way were the studios gonna take that chance, for several reasons. There's some good late 60's videos on youtube here where the band members are so pissed that they made no bones about faking it, & just goofed off. The Letter from the Boxtops is on here & they just fuck about in most of the video.
@HonRevPTB Of course, you're right. Even for gigs like the Super Bowl to this day, musicians record the performance first and then lip sync to it, more or less.
@eddiehalenvan Maybe that's because the rhythm guitar isn't guitar at all in the record: it'as a Rhodes eletric piano with distortion. Eddie was being ironic obviously. :)
Roth had more pussy thrown his way during tours than any frontman I have ever seen.......anybody remember the early tours? Especially the Fair Warning tour......he used to work Mikeys side of the stage and stop during a song and look to entire wall of titties being flashed at him on the side of the stage.....i`m talkin` row after row of women all flashing at the same time! beautiful memories....
@ulizinho And had a commensurate amount of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomonas, scabies, lice...dude prolly has HIV from all that loose snatch...disgusting.
LOVE the Ibanez. Belonged to Chris Holmes, Eddie borrowed and kept it for the entire Women & Children First album. Chris said when he finally got it back it was butchered.
omg I love how Dave picks him up! Haha so funny! Like how can you play when someone picks you up, sings over your shoulder into your microphone and makes your bob up and down on the stage? How? CAUSE HE'S EDDIE FUCKING VAN HALEN!
the new album fucking sucks

Dave could be the best front man I have ever seen - when he picks up Eddie, it's absolutely hilarious, and Eddie looks like he's trying not to laugh. I saw them September , 1980 on the Women & Children First tour -- ridiculously good showmanship & musicianship all around. It's debatable whether Eddie is the greatest guitarist of all time, but what I saw sure puts him in the top 5 (and I have also seen Blackmore , Beck, and a host of others live...)
akibubba1 8 months ago
@akibubba1 Its definaetly debateable, i'm sure there are classical guitar virtuosos out there that more techinically proficient as far as technique in playing and reading music, Eddie is merely the best at what he does...
ROCK N' ROLL BABY!!!!!!

hu, yeha roth in those days was very worried about morrison, lol, he even sleep triyng to match morrison, haha. men, all roth wanted back then is singing, jumping, screwing. morrison is in another league.
bingrasm 8 months ago
Just a hint. Someone probably already said it. EVERYONE on these shows lip syncs. It's the way the show is set up. I don't know if this is Solid Gold but they did it too and Ozzy lip synced Bark at The Moon. It's not the band, it's the show. VH were ICONS and forever will be among the greatest of all time.
abloom1970 8 months ago
Dave has everything on Morrison. Dave is still alive.
marxsbros1 8 months ago
Yeah this was a canned performance. Roth was so clearly lipsynching.
mastermold2011 8 months ago

Rare.
greenfruitface 8 months ago 8
@greenfruitface Exactly. Any band who played on one of these shows (like Top of the Pops, etc.), the REQUIREMENT was that they fake play to a backing track. They're not trying to dupe anyone with that. That was just the contractual requirement for these TV shows. They didn't want things getting outta control, and , let's face it........Van Halen in the studio in those days was potential for just that!
4eyed4stringer 6 months ago
@greenfruitface Painfully obvious it's the studio track.
bandit7498 5 months ago
You are right about the Wurlitzer.
PA28140 5 months ago
@greenfruitface think about it, have u ever heard eddie even try to play the same solo twice? i dont think they could play this live without more equipment.

dariopalladino 10 months ago
Freakin' badass song, too bad it's faked.
It would have been hilarious if the band pulled a Nirvana and didn't even try to mime along!
cameronpicsinc 10 months ago
@cameronpicsinc - I think Michael Anthony banged on the Wurlitzer to do this song live and leave Eddie's hands free for the guitar. I've seen some photos of Anthony playing this big honkin organ and can only guess. Didn't see them until Fair Warning in '81.

Wow?! This is the first time I have ever seen Van Halen lip synching!!?? WTH? Very disappointed. Never thought that they would do that bullshit for tv.
blackfrancis55 1 year ago
@blackfrancis55
They're probably not lip synching. They're probably actually playing it, but the music we're hearing is the one from the studio version. Why they did that...who knows.
jimmyboy131 11 months ago
@jimmyboy131 They did that beacuse in that Spanish show( Aplauso) were forced to do playback all the time. Other American rock bands performed in that show and did exactly the same. It was not as if it was the Letterman show.
barbarian981 10 months ago
@jimmyboy131 No, it's lip-synched. That's just how TV was most of the time in those days. You can see that they're making every effort to replicate the sounds on the recorded version b/c that's they're synching to.

@nyshortline you got that right!!!!! anyone who disagrees F YOU!!!!!!!!! i was lucky to have met Dave at big private party years ago. no bullshit, one of the coolest dudes! he is so friendly and gracious. I think Eddie was the problem. if you can't get along with a laid back good dude like Sammy Hagar you got problems. luv Eddies playing and van halen but i think his drinking and coke use screwed him up big time! he seems like an arrogant prick
livin4fishin09 5 months ago 13
@livin4fishin09 You hit the nail right on the head. I've read both Dave's and Sammy's autobiographies and both of them say the same thing about Eddie. Heavy HEAVY drinker and toker.

n2motocross 1 month ago
@livin4fishin09 I think Ed's arrogance definetly comes from the fact that he is a perfectionist to the extreme, and for a guy with that much talent, its sorta par for the course.

What lip syncing poseurs. Studio musicians must have recorded the music.
TruthAxe 1 year ago
@TruthAxe I know you're intentionally trying to upset people on here, so I'm not gonna say anything nasty. Back then unfortunately most t.v. performances were not live! No fuckin way were the studios gonna take that chance, for several reasons. There's some good late 60's videos on youtube here where the band members are so pissed that they made no bones about faking it, & just goofed off. The Letter from the Boxtops is on here & they just fuck about in most of the video.
HonRevPTB 1 year ago
@HonRevPTB Of course, you're right. Even for gigs like the Super Bowl to this day, musicians record the performance first and then lip sync to it, more or less.
