My favorite piece of all, but this performance misses the mark. Get the old Durufle/Pretre recording. It is far, far better than this. It was done under Poulenc's personal supervision. Everything is right. In most other recordings, the conductor and organist just don't seem to get it. Here, you can tell right from the opening bars that Murray is going to murder the piece, and he does. Get the old Angel recording, and throw this one in the shredder.
What a great piece this is! Whenever I hear pretty much any work by Poulenc or Milhaud I can't help but feel extreme satisfaction. Those Frenchmen just had the gift.
You're absolutely right. As much as I enjoy other more recognized figures in 20th century music, Milhaud and Poulenc remain two of the most underrated composers of the century.
oh! I preformed to Concerto! I have been waiting for someone to post this music so I could listen to it again while I wait for my CD! Thank you so much for posting this!
Ha, ha ... it sure looks like fmbp took one too many Dulcolax. Poulenc is soooo Twentieth century. His music is yummy.

grinder, can you or someone post the Durufle/Pretre recording here?
I like this one, but have no comparison to the other.
Does yours start out with no reeds at the beginning? Just full plenum and bright mixtures?
That would be a change I would make.
Thank you.

Durufle starts with the tutti, as Poulenc specified. You absolutely need the reeds at the beginning.

Yes, but you do NOT need Harrison-voiced reeds at the beginning, like in this recording.

Not every organ is the same...they all have different sounds and Murray, who I know personally, happens to be an extraordinary musician.
