  • French crowds are useless at gigs in general. people start to dance and bounce, and the French get stroppy about it. before this gets any comments about racial sterotyping etc, I'm talking about gigs here in Paris over the last 10 years. yes, I'm French. deal with it.

  • For those wondering, I think the idea all along was for Jimmy to be lead/rhythm guitar but he took up bass to allow Chris Dreja to practice bass playing in private before switching roles and going on tour.

  • Anyone see the Yardbirds on tour this year? I agree with Charixtube..

  • crappy harmonica

  • In warm - ups it must have been so awkward. Like Jimmy picks the bass up, and Chris Dreja picks up the six string... See my point?

  • Jimmy Page slappa de bass.......

  • these new age rock and punk drummers got nothin' on jim mcarty

  • I didn't see jimmy page during the first 30 seconds....that's unacceptable

  • What is this audience brittish

  • @DrummingBonham even worse, they're french.

  • @DrPrice1968 So what, don't look down on french people and moreover what allow you to say that ? Have you ever been in France ?

  • @khaanus lol kidding. sorry if I offended you. (I really shoulda clarified that I was joking)

  • @andaloudog Too white???? What the???? Umm did you watch the video? Have you never seen videos or pics of the Yardbirds??? They ARE white!!! Next thing you know you're gonna say Michale Jackson was too black.... and you'd be wrong on that too LOL.

  • that was a great bassline it seems like the bass players did more back in the day instead of just acting busy on stage

  • i need more jimmy page damn u recording!!

  • Nice riff and go. Can't understand never heard it earlier.

  • If you want to see and hear the original rock guitarist that played the distortion licks on this song 1956.(covered by this group and others).Search-Paul Burlison..Go down to-Rock and Roll Trio-Part Three..second song..then go to the original cut in 1956..Johnny Burnette..Train Kept Rollin

  • LEGEND

  • I love the white suit.

  • This is where it all started... <3

  • Keith Relf vocals, Chris Dreja rythm guitar (plays a Gibson 335), Jimmy Page is playing the bass (it is not clear from the clip, but someone has to be playing it), and Jeff Beck is playing the lead guitar (stratocaster), JP plays a hollowbody instrument, unclear number of strings, but there is a sound of bass (for mid 60's is not bad, I assume is Jimmy)

  • @abazzea

Page is playing bass, pause it @ 1:06 or so, count 4 tuning pegs

  • @fxsrider There's actually a better shot between 2:09 and 2:11 where you can see the bass Jimmy is playing clearer.

  • @abazzea Jeff Beck's playing a Les Paul in this...doesn't look as though there's a Fender in sight.

  • @chiliD322 yes., there are no clear shots of JB;s guitar, but looks more like a LP or a Melody Maker,

(the headstock of the latter is smaller than the one of hte LP, what appears to match this guitar better)

It could be some form of clon. there were english instruments made at that time, american instruments were more expensive and had some trade barriers. Jimmy Page is playing the bass, he sounds well, but what a waste!, having the 2 on stage and not letting them take a solo!

  • The Yardbirds were one of the most important bands in the 60's. Just look at the guitarists they had! Clapton, Beck, and Page all played in the Yardbirds and they are arguably the best guitarists to ever come out of England. The Yardbirds pretty much became Led Zeppelin as Zepp was first known as "The New Yardbirds ft. Jimmy Page". Dreja asked that they change their name and Led Zeppelin was born. Page=god.

  • So Jimmy Page is on bass...Who are the guitar players? Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton? Seriously I can barely see the faces.

  • @GonzoGuyy Jeff Beck is on lead, Chris Dreja is on rhythm. Dreja later switched to bass to allow Page do dual lead guitar with Beck. Clapton never played with Beck or Page in the Yardbirds, Beck replaced Clapton on Page's recommendation. The Yardbirds wanted Page but he wanted to continue session work so he recommened Beck and as a thank you Beck gave Jimmy his Fender Telecaster which Page used in his tenure with the Yardbirds as well as Zeppelin's early career.

  • @fortythreemcchickens Thanks. I didn't think I saw Eric at all. I did find this out by going online, but thanks for the feedback as well.

  • You had to be 12 years old then, male, and a new student in percussion, that had just started to appreciate that girls are different, to be able to look back at all these old videos and REALLY appreciate what was going on. I used to go to bed at night with a "six-transistor" radio, powered by a 9-volt battery, listening to the music my family did NOT play in the car, or in the house. I chose drums because school music did not include guitars. I wanted to be a lead guitar vocalist for babes.

  • Keith Relf's bloody awful vocals were the main reason that the Yardbirds were not a successful band...the only reason that anyone knows about them were there ex-personel...

  • @geriyatv he stinks!

  • @geriyatv Come ON! Even live performances from The Stones (although exciting)sounded bloody awful in those days. Relf sure wasn't a powerful vocalist (with one lung) ,but on the studio albums, he sounds pretty good. He was part of that unique Yardbirds sound.'Success' is relative though. Wished I had been part in such a 'unsuccessful' band.

They were part of that Brittish invasion ,that came after the Beatles & Stones. Their albums sold by the lorry loads in later years.

  • I prefer the Johnny Burnette version.

  • i read page and beck never actually played together in the band i guess they were wrong

  • @nickkalisz yeah page and beck played untill beck left and tried to form his own band so jimmy then left and formed ZEPPELIN

  • 20 people like to collect poop

  • I realize JP was being a team player, but its like having Michelangelo stripe the parking lot.

  • @boogiemaam haha nicely put man :)

  • EPIC

  • this was when jimmy was playing bass huh?

  • The audiences were more in shock & awe. The Yardbirds had that effect because

they were ahead of their time, musically. The birth pangs of Psychedelia,Hard Rock,

Heavy Metal & Punk emanating from "The Most Blueswailing Yardbirds!" (THE BONUS: CLAPTON,BECK & PAGE.................PRICELESS!)

  • the flouride in the water was a sedative

  • The crowd seems sedate... maybe in shock? But they liked it! The recording obviously was not well done but you can still hear Page's solo.

  • johnny burnettes version rocks ten times harder than this

  • Jimmy's amp on the bass is way higher than all the other instruments! lol. I think it was quite difficult to hear the others instruments over it, looking at the expressions of Keith at 1:28 and Jim at 1:47. He needed to be on guitar.

  • in 1965 Jimmy Page lend Jeff Beck a Fuzzbox- Year zero for heavy metal.

  • DEFINITION OF A DEAD CROWD

  • @jellybean1776 No shit right. I wonder what they thought? Bunch of wild kids making all that noise and feelin the groove then looking out to see that lame ass crowd.

  • @jellybean1776 Not really back then sound systems weren't great and people usually shut up at gigs

  • how the great have fallen :( then rised!

  • That's a mean-ass guitar riff even how quiet it is.

  • @1Eu4ic Check out the band that started that riff. It's from the Johnny Burnette Trio in 1956- One of the best Rockabilly bands ever. That's the version that the Yardbirds are covering

  • @rbound827 Cool thanks man

  • The Yardbirds ROCK!!!!!!.. thanx for a great clip !!! Lyndloo..

  • It's funny how the crowd really doesn't care about Jimmy in the back, but just a few years later he was more famous than the entire Yardbirds.

  • this is so good for 1966 omg

  • and most of the people in the audience are saying:

"What on earth is this? Devils music i say! Bobby, cover your ears!"

  • 2:15 Check the guy sitting on the right with the shades looking down....too cool to clap!

  • damn that band had three of the most legendary guitarist ever existed!!

  • im glad aerosmith has this song 2. :P:P

  • Comment removed

  • Johnny Burnette would have approved.

  • The voice is too loud i think..

  • I can not believe that this is Jimmy Pazhi ... What a transformation?? "I'm delighted!

  • i believe clapton is in the band as well. sure looks like him to the right of page

  • @johninjersey No, that is Chris Dreja. Dreja was the original rhythm guitarist for the band and he switched to bass allowing Page and Beck to share lead guitar duties for a few months. Also, Dreja became a professional photographer after the band broke up and he shot the back cover for Led Zeppelin's debut album.

  • the music is good except i think the person at the mixing board was asleep...

  • is that Beck...???

  • haha Jimmy looks super groovy here! woo!

  • what a load of crap, no where as good as Johnny Burnette

  • this version sux to aerosmiths execpt page he can never do wrong lol

  • how crazy is this. the best guitar player on this performance is playing the bass.!!!!

  • Dear Jimmy, is carring the the whole band with his fiff.

  • I was wondering why I only heard the bass and not the guitar... OH WAIT IS THAT A WIZARD I SEE ON THAT BASS?

  • Hey people, Jimmy Page on bass, Jeff Beck on guitar, and help me out here, was it Eric Clapton on another guitar or someone else? I've read somewhere that these guys were bandmates at Yardbirds

  • @tonythetemplar Well they were all in the band, but at different times.

  • @tonythetemplar Clapton left the band a year earlier. In fact, he originally recommended Jimmy Page to be his replacement. However, Page declined in order to concentrate on session work. Page was the one who suggested Beck.

  • @Sargebri Thanks, appreciate this info.

  • is it me or the public is kinda dead during the music?

  • This sounds like such a heavy jam!! Too bad the mixing isn't better ( the price you pay with a live recording I guess.) Especially during the guitar solo. Jeff beck is LAYING IT DOWN, and you can barely hear it. Oh well, still rocks.

  • jimmy plays the bass.....and we can hear it!! wow...what a charisma also with the bass! it overpowers the guitar!

  • Jimmy on the bass > all the noise comes from the bass

  • Man, Jimmy is rocking that bass!

  • Most brilliant time for rock and roll: British Invasion: Beatles, Yardbirds, Stones, Hollies, Animals, The Kinks....they don't make them like that anymore.

  • Hail the Pioniers.

    Grottenschlecht oder Kult?

  • @00AURUM00 see: Os velhos da montanha

  • aerosmiths version of this is great

  • What a revolution had to be in 1966 a sound like that !

  • @charlixtube search Johnny Burnett - train kept a rollin' You'll find that ten years earlier, it sounds even more radical.

  • @charlixtube And even more so when Johnny Burnette rocked it in '56!!

  • @charlixtube oddly enough its straight sped up blues.

  • @charlixtube Not as revolutionary as when Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio did it ten years earlier in 1956

  • Definitely Chris Dreja on bass. Love the "Beach Boys ice cream" suits!

  • Che Carica....

  • Aerosmith had a better version of the song

  • Horrible singer. No wonder they folded up shop. Just because some brilliant guitarist came out of the band, mainly because there was no other band to play with doesn't make these guys anything. Great guitarists. Shitty band

  • Fuck the british they only have so so music that's it u Brits think ur cool with ur faggot accents hold imgonna shove a pizza and burger down my throat cuz imam lard ass American

  • I think aerosmiths version is a lot better Stevens voice isn't as shitty as this guys but it's still a classic.

  • This is great music if you haven`t heard the Real thing. That was the thing in the 60s. Theres no rhythm anywhere in this band. I have alot of respect for Jimmy and Beck though. Great players.

  • The yardbirds sucks ass..... Specially that horrible singer......

Good thing something epic came from that bum group.

  • holy shit, i could've sung better than that guy . . .no wonder this band sank . .

  • There guys are a bunch of fags!!

  • Led Zep played this from Sept. 1968 (then as 'The New Yardbirds) to Summer 1969 all the time. thir version was harder and in my opinion, Plant is the better singer.

  • The Band was called The New Yardbirds but that name went over like a Lead Balloon.

  • @andrewtournavitis

1966 single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" b/w "Psycho Daisies", both featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

  • Never seen this one before....Page & Beck on guitar.....too bad you can hardly hear the guitars. And what about the Johnny Burnette Rock & Roll Trio version? That's more likely where the Yardbirds got their version from. I read that nothing was ever recorded with the Page/Beck lineup....too bad. Some of Page's songs in the Yardbirds became Zeppelin songs, and Zeppelin was originally called The New Yardbirds.

  • I know that It's Bradshaw that did the *original version* But you have to give credit to the yardbirds who changed the style of the song and gave it a whole new turn from jump blues (Swingin' sax and double bass) to rock garage. There's only an album that has both Page and Beck in the lineup (Over under sideways down) .

  • @VotreDjPocail

No Page in Over Under Sideways Down.

It is still Paul Samuel Smith.

  • this version is shit and why do people say its the original? this is a tiny bradshaw song.. and I prefer the aerosmith cover.

  • I'm pretty sure that's Page on lead. It's hard to tell with the bowl haircuts :)

Anyone comparing Aerosmith to the Yardbirds or Zeppelin for that matter, must be young or stupid or both.

  • Everyone should look up the Led Zeppelin Gonzaga version. WAY better.

  • @DrRubics Agree! But gotta love the Yardbirds version because it's theirs to begin with =)

  • Ron Wood would have been in Led Zeppelin, but he thought "I don't want to play with these fkn farmers"

  • Where was this performance at?

  • yea Aerosmith best version

  • @peacelove569 please...

  • Aerosmith???? LOL this is it!

  • @ohiosevere aerosmith was far superior in every way

  • A ese rubiazo me lo vo ya tirar yo esta noche...

  • he replaced clpton i think after he left

  • The Yardbirds very good stage for page

  • Aerosmith's is top, followed by this, and then good ol' tiny bradshaw's.

  • I think this is the show in Nice, Menton or Monaco. Some YBs album a fantastic cover sporting the band in bright whyte suits. They play so well cos' due to refined French cuisine they diet had improved a iota. Look at Relf...baby skin and he didn;t trip over any guitar lead. Best band of the era...Antonioni had done right using them in his flick. Love the drummer too.

  • who cares about steven tyler and aerosmith?

  • Always fun to see old footage of today's legends...Film style typical of the times--it sucked.

  • simply love the yardbirds. i am going to see them may 26 at BB Kings NYC and may 27 at The Boulton center Bayshore NY.

  • @sixitiesking They were great at BB's, weren't they? Their music holds up well-

  • @maida1982a I went to BBs and the Boulton Center. The Yardbirds were fantastic. The show was sooooooooo good.

  • The Yardbirds with original members chris dreja and jim mccarty are playing The Tangiers Akron Ohio on May 23, 2010.

  • bet you all thought Aerosmith was the first group to cover this song ! :)

  • @granger18trains actually it was Led Zep

  • I have tickets to see The Yardbirds at BB Kings New York City on May 26.

  • skuffle us all to death jimi!

  • Can't wait to see The Yardbirds on May 27 at Boulton Center Bayshore NY.

  • Holly Smack! I just found out about this!

    What have I been missing!

  • dno why, reminds me of tvc 15 by bowie:S

  • Jimmy is rocking that bass

  • They sat the crean always rises to the top and that is what this is the creme de la creme. This man was bloody wonderful and what talent emerged from this group.

  • Its sad that Keith's harmonica playing gets lost somewhere. He was great!

  • Oh, this is so COOL!! Thanks for pulling this one out for us! :) They're my favorite group and this kind of stuff was just before I was born, so I can't see it anywhere but here.

  • Wow. Jimmy Page on bass.. wow

  • now this is wat i call some good ass shiieett!

  • got tickets for the yardbirds at boulton center in bayshore long island ny-may 27

  • Tangiers in Akron Ohio has The Yardbirds with original members chris dreja and jim mccarty on may 23.

  • silly youtube comments. This version is awesome ALONG with Aerosmith's. Great damn track overall! With the right energy this song is classic

  • cant wait to see the yardbirds may 27 at boulton center bayshore new york. my buddies saw them last year at westbury. Train kept a rollin, awesome.

  • 2:10

    Lol, look at Jimmy.

It always seems like he's about to do a proper windmill, but he's too cautious about breaking his thumb. I notice that in Zeppelin concerts too.

  • lol look at the audience at the end... All in formal uniforms, silent, motionless people... Yarbirds members should be crazy to be able to do that kinda music!

  • I saw Led Zep do this song in 1969. It was the best. In fact. I have a recording of that night.

  • Song's got a convoluted history.

It's based on the 2 sides of a single by the Johnny Burnette Trio, Coral #61719, "Train Kept A Rollin'" b/w "Honey Hush" from 1956 . "Train" was a cover of Tiny Bradshaw (not Grimes), and "Honey Hush" was originally by Big Joe Turner. The Yardbirds took the words and melody from the A-side, and coupled it with Grady Martin's guitar riff from the B-side, to create the mash-up you hear here.

  • Jeff Beck still jammed it better than anyone else in a later version from the 80's to put Joe Perry back in his little box.......Ya'll should check that out !!!!!

  • It's a tiny bradshaw jump blues tune, that was covered by Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll trio with a nicely distorted guitar riff later in the 50's, excellent rockabilly version, and the Yardbirds took it from there.

  • Wow i didn't know that they did this song, Aerosmith covers it and I thought they did it, but no wonder that was like the only song of theirs I liked and now I know why.

  • i think this was an old blues song that they covered?

  • The original was done by Tiny Grimes....1949.....

  • I was thinking the same thing.

  • you made me laugh. thank you have a nice day.

  • You know how expensive, hurtful and complicated divorces between two people are? Very. Now amplify. Now add media. Now people. I've said enough....And, who ever said it sounded punk....hmmm

  • Ok just to clear everything up. It was Keith moon who said , "it will go over like a lead ballon " however , John Entwistle than screamed " A Led zeppelin " !! Also Stuka52 is absolutely correct , JImmy Page took over and had contract obligations to fullfill so for about 6 months they toured as The New Yardbirds !! lastly , if anyone wants to hear a mind blowing solo of Heartbreaker from a guy who covered Zeppelin and played with Robert and Bonzo !! It is a guy I know from NY I am on AOL

  • real punk!!!

  • "Do What Thou Wilt"

  • "inspired by Jake Holmes"

    HA!!!!!!!!!!

  • u guys are dumbasses yardbirds did not become led zeppelin. after page formed led zeppelin (by the way keith moon gave them the idea for the name) they later decided to do yardbird covers

  • @GuitarPlayer727 ok, im glad that you know that it was keith how gave led zeppelin there name.

  • @99storm4

I thought it was John Entwistle who said the famous quote when page asked them to form a super group with him?

  • im pretty sure it was keith.

  • @99storm4

i thought it was john who said "The gig would go over like a led zeppelin" if they did form a band : )

  • @GuitarPlayer727 You are wrong! the Yardbirds did become Led Zepplin in a way. Page formed a band called the New Yardbirds (I saw them in 68) they performed a couple of songs that would show up on Led Zepplins first album, I saw Zeps first tour and recognized the material.

  • Jimmy Page was in the Yardbrids and when the band split he formed Led Zeppelin, the Yardbirds still had dates left in their Scandinavian tour which Led zeppelin completed as The New Yardbirds. Led zeppelin wern't covering the yardbirds with Dazed and Confused (inspired by Jake Holmes) and Tangerine, they were Jimmy Page's songs that he wrote when he was in the yardbirds, dumbass!

  • Actually, didn't Page retain the rights to the name and as a result he formed "The New Yardbirds" which after playing 6-8 gigs then became Led Zeppelin? The New Yardbirds were Zeppelin.

  • ur a fucking dumbass.

led zeppelin were supposed to become the yardbirds.

and it was entwhistle not moon who came up with the name led zeppelin!

  • yea thats page on bass
