1. Fully qualified domain name, a .com for the local domain? You are asking for trouble.
2. Fixed IP's, Ideally you should be running DHCP on the DNS server. It's easier to manage, and the DNS server will be able resolve records for internal UNC paths much better.
3, You are going to do a demonstration, know what you are doing, don't work it out on the hoof.
i have a new server with windows server 2003 on it i have notisd that when it is on it is allways accessing the internet when it shoud not i only have it setup as a file server for my network nothing shout be sent over the internet when i click on the status on the network adapter it is continualy sending packets to the internet when not in use my rougter internet light is flashing all the time do u now what is casing it thanks
Don't try to do it this way. It is much too complicated and probably doesn't work anyway. The way we do it at my work is: Right Click on My Computer, left click on properties, click on computer name tab, click on the change button, click on the Domain radio button, type in the name of your domain, and clock okay. You will be prompted for your admin account and password (authentication) and a message will appear "Welcome to XXX" XXX is the name of your domain. You are all done.
@Fortyn9n3 It looks like he does an additional edit to his data in one of the fields and then presses spacebar since next has the dotted lines around it.
At the same time this video is so poorly done I wouldn't worry about it too much.
If hes adding the computer to the domain why not just right click my computer, select properties, click the computer tab, click the change button, select domain and then put the domain information in, and then the administrator password when prompted? Wouldn't that achieve the same concept? Without having to change DNS addresses and all this other stuff he was doing?
Lol along with like 99.999% of all other admins..except for this guy. The only thing I can think of that he is doing here is adding the computer to the domain without being on that particular host. If that is the case..I still wouldn't do it this way. At my job our server manages 3000+ hosts, we cant afford to have odd behaviorusing methods like this one to add a machine.
I especially dont like that hes getting error messages during this tutorial. Although I can't read what they say.
how did you have the cabling setup, was it through a switch or with a router, was the server setup with the DHCP role activated, and how do you find out the servers DNS ip
Well first the computer must be added to the domain by an administrator. Once the host is part of the windows domain of your server, you must have a valid user account in active directory to use. When you login with a valid user name it is checked against the active directory user accounts and the password is sent to the server encrypted.
Once authenticated you are issued a ticket (as per username and rights). This ticket is presented when you want to access shares or server resources.
hi thanks for that but i thought there was more to it than that. user logs in username ans pass is checked against some database in the system (think this is active directory is that right) can you recommend a good book i could read up on. Also say i want to add a member server to AD for purpose of applications system for runing bespoke software on whats best method. Used to be in NT you would drop application onto a backup domain controller or create standolone member server thanks for help
Yes, that is correct. Active directory is the local database of windows server. It stores such information as domain registered computers, user accounts & passwords, Access rights, policy settings, groups etc etc. When logging in it does a check against the active directory users organization unit (basically a folder).
After it finds the user account it can see what policies are associated with it, what groups they are apart of, and other services they may or may not have rights2
Im not familiar exactly with the process of adding member server as i only work with one domain controller and the other servers are stand alone servers that have a user account on the DC in the event they need to access files. If you want it to be a member server there is plenty of MS knowledge base articles on how to do so.This can also be done with samba for Linux/Mac servers.I would suggest the MS press MCSE books.comes in a pack of 5 for the MCSE exam.Covers everything for w2k3
sometimes there is an option in the bios that will start the server back up when it's powered down. I don't know anymore what's it's called you have to look for yourself.
The only way to turn the server on after is being turn it off is using "wake on LAN", you have to install a new network card for that, and as well your main board must support wake on LAN.
hello, how can i do a, automatic startup in windows server 2003? like if the system turns off accidentally in the night, how to turn it on automatically by the system config, with any person beign there to do it manually?
Are you referring to wake on lan? If so you need another computer or device to send the magic packet in order to get the machine back on.
A better power failure redundancy is a long lifetime uninterruptable power supply in the event power goes down it will use that until power is restored.

A lot of bad practices going on here.

To Fortyn9n3 - He just hit the next button and the dialogue box pops up.

wake on power failure is available on most modern bios which will trigger the server back on in the event of a power failure
