I never punctured them until I watched this video. I never had any problem with splitting either, and I also have always used Johnsonville. I punctured them last time, and the only difference I noticed was that they didn't plump up quite as much as usual. Not a terribly noticeable difference though.
I was always told to never puncture the casing. I'll try this next time I do brats. All your uploads are great. I've had a Charbroil for a few months now and I see what a fun hobby this is! Plus my neighbors are enjoying it too!
Yeah, I was told that too. But, the casings split wide open which actually releases more juices. By puncturing them you eliminate the splitting and they look much better when you are done grilling them. Thanks for stopping by.
Quick question though. If I am unable to get access to an outdoor grill, would this preparation process still work if I could use a Foreman grill or pan-fry?
Thanks. If you don't have access to a grill, try to brown them up in a skilled on the stove. The browning will make the brat casing crunchy, which is what you want. Thanks for stopping by.
This video was probably the most informative of the ones that I have watched. The brats are easy and simple to make, but you still go through the effort of explaining everything. Thanks!
Finally an awesome beer brat video! Kudos! Hey can i use like Corona or Sol beer w/ my brats those are my fav beers but they have a saltier taste, do you think if i use corona or Sol will it ruin my brats?
I think any beer works. I used Miller because that's what I had on hand.
I am curious to try an ale next time to see how it performs. In my opinion, the key is to punch holes in the brats and then to grill after boiling in beer to create that all important texture.

Great brats!! I've always gone to great lengths NOT to puncture my Brats fearing it would lose vital juices and flavor. But, I tried it your way and they were great!!

I just used your recipe. I tweaked it a little by adding a little garlic and butter, but man, these are good! Thanks for the tips!

Nicely done video. Good clear instructions and a recipe that is not overly complicated, nor too simplistic.

@gregsandiego Thank you very much! Let me know how they turn out if you give them a try.

@BBQMyWay They turned out great. I didn't have that special veggie grilling tool though. Still the beer cooked onions were good on the brats.

@gregsandiego Awesome! I think I will do some this weekend.

Whats the seasoning you add to the broth??
KGodelie 11 months ago
Definitely need to try this recipe! Never knew about the casing. What other beer do you recommend to use other than Miller Beer?
ravendanzig 1 year ago
@ravendanzig I used miiler because it's all I had. I think the more flavor, the better, so if I had my druthers I would use a nice ale.

thanks, i'll try that this spring..I have a gas grill, what should i do, lol.
kosh2001 3 years ago
You will be fine with gas. The point of the grilling portion it to add the texture, as the brats will have already been cooked in the beer.

that's the best way to do brats, and really the only they should be done. Yes the piercing of the brats beforehand is the key. Awesome video!

Thanks, and I totally agree. I have done them both ways and there is no comparison. Thanks for stopping by!

Looks great! What else can you use to steam besides beer? Will regular water be OK?
getch47 3 years ago
Ok but not as good. I would flavor the water with something...some spices...or...get a nonalcoholic beer.

I've clearly been cheating myself when it comes to brats... Also, good point, need to pierce those casings.
freesignal 3 years ago
Piercing the casings makes all of the difference in terms of how they look when you serve them.
