@MrKnexguy123, where do you live? Any saltwater/reef store should have them. You most likely will not find them in any regular chain retail pet store. They do not have the right lighting to keep such creatures in their displays.
@MrKnexguy123 Heck ya! Ever seen fresh water pearls in jewellery stores? As for clams for the home aquarium, honestly not sure. I doubt it - would probably be hard to feed. Reef clams feed off of sunlight and nutrients in saltwater. Since freshwater requires less intense lighting I'm pretty sure they require more 'natural' food supplemented to live.
@WWpictures100 Technically.... $0. They are filter feeders so they feed off of photosynthesis and nutrients in the water. The main thing they need is plenty of high output light in the correct spectrum.
@RaffleReefer10; this I don't know. Honestly I don't see why not. Clams can get huge so they need the room to grow but they won't get HUGE for years and years. I would say as long as your lighting is strong enough and the tank is established and not new... and you may have to supplement a food source. That said, you should be able to keep one.
i have a 6 feet long tank ... and its 9 months old ... i have recently fit 2 t5 54w and i have 2 mh ( i use it only for 2hours daily and t5 for 4 hours daily ) can i keep CLAM ????????
@319PurpleHaze - how deep is your tank? Lighting-wise you should have enough light to keep a clam but to ensure health I'd leave your lights on for longer. Also, clams tend to like dirtier water so at 9 months your tank might not be mature enough unless you spot feed it. What else is in the tank? Make sure it's not carnivorous to the clam....
@319PurpleHaze Tank size is fine. Age of tank should be ok. If you increase your lighting period times then keeping a clam should not be a problem at all.
@11aamiller; You can buy them when they're in season at your local saltwater/reef fish store. But beware, there is a good amount to know before you jump into keeping saltwater fish and invertibrates... not to mention it is super expensive. Although a clam will only run you $25+, do put together a tank properly it will be hundreds of dollars just to start... easily to thousands. I think I've spend about $6K on my tank so far!!!
@gummi67 "You can buy them when they're in season at your local saltwater/reef fish store." what's the meaning 'in season'? are they seasonal invertebrates??
@clamsywati Where I live there are certain seasons where LFS bring them in. They are not always available. If they are available in a store typically in a time where they cannot thrive, you will get a bad specimen.
how how well would a clam in a 26 gallon bow front tak thats 20 inches deep and a 48 watt t-5 light on it i dose the tank and it is a reef iv keep refs for a while but iv never had a calm and the LFS has a big sale
No, I don't think that will be enough. You will have to retrofit or change your lighting system to 4 T5s or metal hailide. But you can try it along with dosing the tank but I'd recommend against it. Your only option is to locate your clam higher up on your live rock (not on sand bed) so it's closer to the T5s then you might be ok.
@hoopla5117 so out of everything that the human race has done, its this minor arguement on a video about a clam that pushed you over the edge and convinced you of the hopelessness of humanity? haha
Dose vodka? Are you for real? That explains why my levels are off!! But really vodka are you serious? What would that do? I would expect A total die off
Not sure where you live but no, you don't need a license. If you can buy it from a pet store then you can have one. The store that imports them will need a license.
Clams are 0% risk to eating anything in your tank. They are very delicate and reactive to light. They are reef safe because they are part of the reef... all they do is sit there! You can feed it phytoplankton but really you don't need to feed it anything at all. Just make sure your calcium is at least 420 and that you have strong lighting such as T5HO or metal halide... they live and feed off of photosynthesis. Hope that helps.
They do need food, in nutrient depressant tanks you WILL need to feed them to keep them in prime shape. They are only about 70-80% photosynthetic. In nutrient rich tanks you might not NEED too feed them because the tank naturally feeds them.
Basically, if you skim heavily, do very frequent water changes, run ozone, dose vodka, run UV sterilizers etc. you have a nutrient poor tank.
I just had one question...I have a 20 Gallon reef right now, was wondering if I could keep a maxima under a JBJ 150W fixture. Will it outgrow the tank? Thanks
Yeah, that will be more than enough light. Maximas can get big but i dont think it'll outgrow your tank... not for a long time. You will upgrade to a bigger tank before the clam gets too big. Dersea get larger quicker... Good luck!
Geee, Thanks a lot, however I changed my mind and I'm upgrading to a 40G breeder. It will have a 36" Nova Extreme Pro 6x39W on it.The tank is only 16" deep. Do you think the T-5's can handle a maxima? Thanks ^^
yeah, that will be enough light for him.... you'll be fine. I keep mine under 4 T5HO 54W but only for a total of 4h/day... 1 hr lights 1 and 3 are on, 2 hrs all lights are on, 1 hr lights 2 and 4 are one. He's been healthy for a year now.
