@OrangeSodaKing 1) BTW, I think (not sure) I may have known him at Juilliard, about 50 years ago. If it was him, we were friends, and he was a teenager we called Tony Paik, and he was (IIRC) a student of Mme. Lhevinne.
While I was stationed in Seoul (US Army Band, 1963-64), I attended a concert he played there. I can't remember what he played (can't really recall whether it was a concert or a recital). (cont.)
@OrangeSodaKing 2) I do remember that he was like a rock star there. After he had played, a large mob of girls chased him all around the hall's halls.
Wow!! Funny, that never happened to me. Dunno why. Maybe I shouldda played Korea. :-))
@snaaptaker Sounds like I'm going to go to Korea sometime! But seriously, that's really neat if you did in fact know him. He did study at Juilliard, and was a student of Mme. Lhevinne. He went by Tony back then?
I agree with Dmitriev's opinion. His version of the Rachmaninoff c minor concert has an expansiveness and immediacy of emotion that one asssociates with the finest Russian interpreters, indeed surpasses many. A great artist! Thanks ever so much for posting!
When Paik was invited to St.Petersberg International Festival this year, he played 4 concertos and Paganini Rapsody in just 2 days. The ayudience was facsinated by his perfomances and the conductor Alexander Dmitriev said "His performances were more Russian than any Russian pianists". Paik is one of the jurors for the Tchaikovsky International Competition and art director of Dinar Music Festival of France.
I think 4 dislikes because when the orchestra plays, the sound quality is just BAD (not the orchestra, but the video sound)

WOW. Incredible. Why 4 dislikes?
I'm going to have to meet this man and ask him which concerto is more difficult: Rach 3 or Busoni (he plays both).
OrangeSodaKing 1 year ago
@OrangeSodaKing He would probably tell you that the Busoni is much more difficult.
I've played the Rach3. I don't think I would even attempt the Busoni.
Fortunately for me, I don't much care for it. :-))

@snaaptaker Well, Busoni's is not everyone's cup of tea, that's for sure.
And thanks for your other comments, by the way.

@OrangeSodaKing Well, if he's the same guy I knew back then, everyone called him Tony. I don't know why.
Funny, he didn't look Italian. :-))
