I am a high school drop out I got my GED in the US Navy. I went into the field of sales after the Navy. I have been prescreened out of many good jobs because I do not have a degree. Do I regret not getting a degree? Yes. But, I believe a degree is only the first step in a successful career and can never insure your success in the work force. I believe only being aware, working harder and being better than the person competing for your position will insure your success.

It is incredibly difficult to find a job right now for many people in most of the nation. I personally know several people with master degrees and higher in applied fields that have not found work or work substantially below their skill level. Insulting those that have not found work is not productive.
The degrees are pointeless. The school system is a business that sells the naive sheep, hope and dreams. Whether the degree says "art, or science", it doesn't matter. Employers don't care. College is oversold and overrated for today's young people! My advice to a young person: get a skill in a technical field at most at a two year institution. I have a nephew, 21, who went 12 months to refrigeration school. He's making good money and has been in the workforce two years already earning money--while many of his friends are still in college with no clear job prospects and a large debt waiting for them once they graduate. Another nephew got into industrial maintenance--same story.

I have a bachelors in Business Management. I realize there are many people who try and put down a degree or don't know how to use their degree. Look, right after I earned my degree, I decided to join the U.S. Army, and after 4.5 years, I have a contracting job earning $150,000. And yes, the job requires a bachelors degree. Even if a job is available, it's not the $25 an hour that we are told we will get.
If knowledge is what is important, there is no reason that we should not be allowed to learn it on our own... without paying thousands of dollars to be taught.

College is oversold and overrated for today's young people! My advice to a young person: get a skill in a technical field at most at a two year institution. I have a nephew, 21, who went 12 months to refrigeration school. He's making good money and has been in the workforce two years already earning money--while many of his friends are still in college with no clear job prospects and a large debt waiting for them once they graduate. Another nephew got into industrial maintenance--same story.

It also didn't take much to be a doctor back then. I doubt anyone could even diagnose whether or not someone had the flu,or questioned that perhaps having utensils made out of lead was deadly, or realized how deadly hygiene was leading up to the black plague.
Doctors by Today's standards are NOTHING like the so called doctors from centuries ago in which treatment was leeches, opium, or some other convoluted idea. Doctors now have an understanding of the human body.

People didn't know what bacteria was back than, the only defense they had was their immune system. Today's Antibiotics(which was found by people with degrees) save millions of live every year. Doctors also cured the terrible disease Poliomyelitis that crippled thousands of people.

I wish I had recorded the paper shredder shredded apart my PhD degree in Computer Science from TUM. Never regret. I couldn't find any job in 16 months after graduation. Wasted 8 years for something that totally worthless.
I have seen many rich and well-educated people make money out of their high school diplomats or none education certificate at all.

@wentafew You are totally right, I was a fucktard in the 90s. I failed the 3rd year with 32% which was why it took me 8 instead of 7 years to complete my studies. The only job I did after graduation was being a night-shift baker.
I wasn't lucky like most folks to have a pair of legs and good health condition to roll my wheelchair to job everyday. I'm not gifted at mathematics. I'm not a social person. However I'm a realism and I never give up.
The PhD diplomat proves nothing to my knowledge.

I am sorry to hear you don't have legs, but Lack of legs shouldn't be holding you back. If you truly got a PhD in Comp Sci then you have to be good at Math. You have to go through Calc and theory.
I play online games with tons of people who never have to leave their home because they work for companies managing servers from home.

Degrees are paper, the value of them is inflated by the education system attempting to turn a profit. There is an inherit value to education and being educated but smart people are passed by every day in favor of those more "qualified" which 90% of the time, lets face it, is a douche bag from a wealthy family who was willing to send their kid to a 4 year party so they can scrape a passing grade and get that paper that says the kid is better than other people.

It works all the time, people hire me instantly. While with PhD it worked the opposite.

I have a bachelors in Business Management. I realize there are many people who try and put down a degree or don't know how to use their degree. Look, right after I earned my degree, I decided to join the U.S. Army, and after 4.5 years, I have a contracting job earning $150,000. And yes, the job requires a bachelors degree. So NEVER put down a degree. There will always be a use for it in the future. You NEVER know. So peace everyone! I've been to Iraq, and now i'm going to Afghanistan!! :D
