  • "There seems to be something behind that door"

    *Walk past slowly*

    "CRASH"

    FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK

  • "YOU THERE."

  • For me this was way more scarier than Amnesia.

  • That weird sound at 0:14 it's pratically the Infected theme.

  • Hearing this music and the infecteds walk right outside...

  • penumbra SOOOO reminds me of that THE THING movie.... lol

  • @kadesibert The devs have hinted at the Carpenter version as one of their sources of inspiration. ;-) The kennels in Black Plague are pretty much one big love letter to the movie's kennel scenes...

  • infected: "is someone there???"

philip: "christ! what was that? where can i hide?!"

  • Oh fuck, oh hell, Black Plague is way scarier than Overture, dammit.

  • used to listen to that soundtrack while asleep...fucks up mind.

  • Frictional Games write their name into horror game history forever..... Creepy atmosphere, abandoned places, scary enemies and you don't have any weapons or flashlights! O_o

  • @Tenshionnanoko128 You have a portable light source in any of their games. You may run out of oil or batteries, though.

  • @paddymoep

    That's right....

But you can't use the flashlight or oil lamp as a "self-defence device/weapon". It's just an addition to a game to make the player feel himself more defenceless and lonely/forsaken

I love their games - a small group of developers but they made excellent games in this genre so far. :)

  • @Tenshionnanoko128 I think , without a flashlight, you would be more helpless than without one.

Think penumbra spiders. Remember what the flashlight does to them? Right.

And the oil lantern is a main factor in amnesia. Remember what light does to Daniel? jup, right again.

Phillip in Overture can defend himself. In Black Plague, he can, too. It just takes time to kill a tuurngait.

In Amnesia, Daniel simply freaks out when seeing a gatherer. No chance to defend himself.

  • @paddymoep well daniel can kill a kaernk ike a turrngait it just takes time if you keep bashing it with things it dies you can tell when you see yellow liquid where it was sanding

  • @verizonfios10 The yellow liquid is supposed to be its saliva, called " tampter" in the game. It usually appears when the kaernk is feasting on some flesh. The "killing" is nonsense, though. Kaernks have no model, so they don't have a death animation. If you throw an object at where its feet should be, sometimes the kaernk glitches up and vanishes. You are not supposed to be able to kill it, but you can surely get rid of it.

  • D: it wouldn't of been nearly as unnerving if this weren't in the game.

  • I think Penumbra is one of the best horror games i have seen. The story is totally genius and the horror parts are scary xD

  • @ORTmusic So Sub-Zero is based on 100 different Effing OST's? No.

  • One of the most scariest games i've never see in Youtube... even more than Amnesia... Fuck!!!

    Cheers!

PD: Sorry my english, i'm totally spanish. Also, i have roots of Cuba on behalf of my father.

  • Fuck you clarence !

  • I can clearly remeber that day of February 15th 2008, 3 days, after Black Plague was released. I remember the horror from Penumbra: Overture, but when i first tried the Black Plague, i really went to psychosis, after i first encountered the "Infected" (the zombie). Ahh those days when i still were on one of the last classes on junior high school, and summer vacation was coming. I miss those days.

  • I love Frictional games, they alert you when enemies are near.

This won't always help, of course..

  • back in classic times, horror music was made with sounds of haunted castles, now they make it with samples of bugging 56k internet connection noises, cool.

  • @hoboterror Now tell me, how exactly does a haunted castle sound?

    Play Amnesia.

Also, this game and its soundtrack has nothing to do with castles. It is supposed to be tense, and it works.

  • it'd be like ... Did i hear something? ... naa, wait .. is THAT A TOURCH!?! FUCK THE MUSIC!!!! AAAAHHHHHHH

  • @MaxGriffinNZ lol, if you thought that was scary get their second game amnesia, the music is as scary but after playing it, you realise that he never needed songs to scare the crap outta you, personally, Amnesia ruined all horror games to me, none gives me chills anymore.

  • @Raxyzz

The funny thing is, Amnesia is not scary either, at least in my opinion.

  • @Tevoxzi Are you serious? Did you followed the instructions? Played on dark, maxed the contrast, adjusted the gamma, used headphones and played alone? I did it all, and it was a terrific experience. Though when i shut down the game i wasn't scared anymore, like, it wasn't enough to keeo me awake at night.

  • @Raxyzz

I knew you were gonna come at me instantly once I'll share a differing opinion (like it often happens nowadays in this closeminded community of YouTube's)

Yes, I did all that, whether you believe it or not, I just didn't find the game scary, it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the game. I just simply didn't find the game scary nor anywhere worth the hype the horror has gotten.

People are different, that's what. We all react to fictional and factual differently.

  • @Raxyzz

It just ticks me off when people call Amnesia the scariest game ever, because in my opinion, it is not. The fact that this is called so, gives me the idea that it's hard to actually find anything "scarier" than this nowadays. Most of the people who claim Amnesia is the scariest game, haven't actually played that many horror games to begin with.

Yes, I know we're all entitled to our opinion, but I hope you understand my point of view as well. I want to find a scarier game than this.

  • @Tevoxzi Dood, relax, i wasn't trying to flame you or something like that, i'm just surprised, because to me it was the scariest game i've played, actually not even movies caused that same chills on me.

I agreed with your line "We all react to fictional and factual differently.", but i couldn't understand what you meant at "worth the hype the horror has gotten", because hype it's something this game didn't had.

  • @Tevoxzi In the end the fact is, there CAN be done something more scarier than this, but i guess to date, there's anything that could take the title. And Frictional did a great thing by not adding combat to the game, after all, neither Dead Space or STALKER SoC was more chilling than amnesia because of the gunplay.

But you got me curious, what is a game or movie you consider the scariest?

  • @Raxyzz

Well, it's a little difficult to say what's the scariest, because a lot of these horror games & movies are in different playstyles, etc, some are also more and less predictable ( i.e. FEAR is predictable). At the moment I'm playing the PS1 Silent Hill.

I still love Amnesia, don't get me wrong, the story is brilliant and I loved the game overall, I intend to play it through the 2nd time at some point. I think the reason Amnesia didn't affect as much, was because I've gotten used to..

  • @Raxyzz

..the atmosphere having played Penumbra Overture & Black Plague first.

  • @Tevoxzi Interesting, if you just got used to it then i can understand. I've played Amnesia first, so the Penumbra series didn't scared me. I'm doing the second playthrough of Amnesia and... hell, i'm still scared. Anyway, this was a good talk, in the end we just shared opinions, i just hope you find a game you can call it the scariest, because for the lovers of the genre there's nothing better than fell the fear.

  • @Raxyzz

    That is true. :)

  • I lag in this game so much when I am in the infected corridors level after you go outside in the cold its pretty darn scary when you find the infected zombie person and lagging and running away from it

  • @mikeltv1 lol time to buy a new computer is more like it

  • Got the "Enemy Encounter"-Musik also? You know, when you are detected and get chased by those monsters?

  • @Astaroth1985 ...Wow.. this guy doesn't have it.... :U

  • @FastFlyerJr

That's the reason why i asked him.

  • This is the only game which I ever paused and exit from at times, because of how scary it is. The music really adds to it.

  • The scariest part of the OST was at 0:14...

  • Music like this is why more often then not Black Plague made me scream and turn the game off.

  • @MikuMech I agree. The "Danger is near" music in Black Plague was much more intimidating than in Overture.
