For those who want tabs try stefans website he has a good deal of DVD lessons with tab now for the important part Stefan THANK YOU so very much for keeping this music alive I know the reverend and many others are thrilled to hear you play
I shared student halls of residences with a guy that had been taught by a Grossman enthusiast. I was an out and out shredder at the time. I was 17. It expanded my horizons hugely.
If I was a woman, my desire would be to marry Stefan Gossman. Right now its to marry Anne Briggs. However shes a wee bit older than I, so its a time machine first.
Stefan, I found a book you wrote called "Country Blues Guitar" printed in 1971, and it has the best, easiest to understand guitar tablature in it. I'm a professional musician and I'm teaching myself to play "old style", Delta type blues on the guitar and your tab is making it immeasurably easier to learn. I can't thank you enough for carrying on the tradition of teaching others what you have learned of the different blues styles. I am doing my best to do the same with what I learn. You rock.
Thx for the lesson- I have been listening to him for about 40yrs. My friend jim used to help him around and took me to say hello just before he died. Annie gave us one of his harps each.I think of him a lot and always will
Stefan I have an album of yours from about 1973 - in concert - performing this song almost exactly the same way! Nice to see things don't change much ...
Davis' recording from Pure Religion doesn't include the extra beat when F is "rolled into." If you try listening the his arrangement from Pure Religion, using the first bass note as the & of 4, the entire tune is turned around, and the F part makes more sense. I tried counting the bass note as the down beat for a long time, and could never reconcile this. If you put the bass notes on &, the whole thing makes more sense.
John Hurt and Gary Davis did two different songs with the same title- "Candy Man". You can find instructions on how to play Hurt's version easier than you can the Gary Davis version. Just look around on Youtube. The Blues Story dvd also has footage of Jerry Ricks playing the Hurt version.
I'm not a musician at all. Grossman seems to be playing this very well, but it lacks something that was in the air when Gary Davis recorded it for "Good Religion & Bad Company". The guitar playing and singing on that recording sound particularly ancient and beautiful. Hats off to Grossman for keeping Davis' legend alive!
I was so happy to see you in Nice, France, in a small show, You dedicated my LP and sheet music, you are so good in playing piano on a guitar !!!!!!
