Good test. I want to buy one of these for my camcorder but do you know what cable I need to get for it or does it come with the cable? My cam has a 3.5 jack input. Thanks.
@smithy2306 The cable that comes out of the microphone is an XLR cable. To convert that into a 3.5mm jack input on your camera, you will need something like a Beachtek DXA-4 converter which I used in the video. There are lots of other options out there as well, such as Juiced Link products but at the time the Beachtek was the cheapest one I could afford.
@aupairdiary This setup has the NTG2 connected directly to the camera. However, I suggest recording to a separate unit to get better quality as it doesn't go through the camera's AGC. Look at some of recent videos I have; all of them (unless it says so otherwise) has the mic going to the Zoom.
@aupairdiary I currently have a Canon 7D as well and I opt not to use the mic input. Unless the camera specifically has audio level controls like a professional digital camera, it will have AGC on it which will vary the audio levels. However even cameras like the 5D and the new 60D which have manual audio level settings, I still won't use it because without a headphone jack, you can't monitor the sound. It's not bad, better than the onboard mic in the 7D but it's not professional sounding.
@SpyCap Hey I'm trying to decide weather to spend a lot of money now to get the NTG-3 with blimp and boompole or just get the NTG-2 w/ blimp&boom and spend money on other accessories. BTW i also have the h4-n. great little thing. so what do you think?
@rememberstudio If you already have an H4n, it wouldn't hurt to spend it on the NTG3 and blimp and boompole. You want to get the best sound if you have the money before you spend it on accessories.
When I use my NTG-2 footage to edit, I only hear sound coming from the left speaker. I can't balance it for some strange reason. I know this is a mono mic., but why do I hear sound coming from both speakers when watching your video?
@njinwezen The adapter I was using at the time split the signal into two mono inputs; one for the left, one for the right. On the H4n I use now, I have the setting to split the mono signal into dual mono.
However even if you can't get it on camera, you can also copy the mono track in post and duplicate it for the right track
I have a problem. When I use the NTG-2 footage I recorded I only hear sound coming from the left speaker. I know this is a mono mic. but I hear sound coming from both of my speakers when I'm watching your vid.
Hey man. I'm from Oz and thinking of buying this camera. do you reckon its any good for the likes of Indie shorts and whatnot? And in regards to the beachtek adapter.. does it mount to the side of the camera or did you have to improvise on getting it to stay still? Forgive my noobness, but any other recommendations about this fine beauty?
@natg900 The Beachtek adapter mounts on the bottom of the camera and at the bottom of the adapter are the holes to mount that ontop of your tripod. It's a good camera. I'm upgrading to the Canon 7D and using this camera as my behind the scenes camera
I'm going to be getting a JVC GZHM200, I'm going to be useing this camera to record guitar and gear demos mostly. The quality of the video is amazing, but the sound isn't quite what I would like. I really like the mic your useing here but I can't really afford it right now. Do you have any suggestions for a mic that I could get that is under $100?
I'm sure if you google some microphones you can find some good mics. Unfortunately, I do not know of any other brands that sell good mics for that price. However when I got my JVC Everio, I did purchase the external mic accessory and the sound from that was an upgrade to the internal mic. I'd check and see if your model has an external mic first.
I was wondering, when recording from this mic directly to the camera does the it only pick up Mono sound? Im having problems with this and not sure whether its the cable or not.
I was wondering, when recording from this mic directly to the camera does the it only pick up Mono sound? Im having problems with this and not sure whether its the cable or not.
Even in this video, it seems like the bass of the sound is a little bit over, is there something which can be adjusted while filming? rather then arranging the sound when editing.
secondly,
when I;m filming using the sony z5, the sound levels are set on MANUAL, and the bars reach to half way not more (so I'll have to adjust that to AUTOMATIC) so the bar levels reach higher sound, is that somthing normal?
The bass boost is originating from the microphones design. It is slightly heavier in the bass than other microphones but the reason for the over-bass in this video is because I had some poor audio rendering. (Kind of missing the point really in an audio test haha)
However, I've since figured out better audio rendering and depending on the software you use to edit, that could take a few tries. One of my latest shorts that focuses on good audio is About a Girl.
About your second question, you ALWAYS want to use manual because usually in auto, if the sound is is not meeting the cameras specifications, it will digitally add dBs and this is problem because it will raise both sound and noise in the audio. What you want to do is set your max dB as close to 0 without going over. That camera SHOULD be able to do that. If not, a separate audio recording unit might come in handy. But you should be able to do that.... Hope that helps!
no you don't have to. I have heard however that one way produces a better signal for the sound than the other but since I do not have phantom power I won't know for sure. Maybe you can let me know! =]
The mic placement was fine, but your audio levels were abit too high. When you talked loud, it started to distort the noise rather than a clean noise.
Its good that you had the mic close, thats the best thing to do.
actually I'm beginning to think that Youtube is lowerering the quality of the audio because I've looked up the video on the computer and the quality is beautiful. And I've recently read that Youtube compression on the audio is horrible which makes this test useless on youttube
i just bought the ntg-2 and have it hooked up to my camcorder by an adapter. whenever i start to record, a low ambience/ clicking noise is heard in the background. Yours sounds clean though, so i was wondering what you use exactly. The camera its hooked up to is a canon, and I use apple software to edit. Thanks a lot.
Hey thanks this is really helpful! I just watched some of your Avenue B roll and outtakes and saw you using it, do you mind if me asking if you think $500 was worthit for it? and where did you buy it? Thanks
oh yes, for 500 dollars, quality sound is definately worth it. If you want to hear audio that came from the onboard camera mic, look at my Parts of a Moment video. Horrible sound there.
I bought most my stuff at B&H. Great prices. Great quality.
lol luck had nothing to do with it. when you save a lot of money up, you start investing it in things...lol I think the next thing I'm saving up for now is a new camera. a more professional grade one. primarily Canon's XH-A1
I agree with you. I work 7 days a week for abut 11 months. I was able to buy $25,000.00 worth of video equipment cash! I owe zero $ and I don't have to worry about getting gigs. Now a comment on your test of the on board camra mic and the Rhode NTG2 mic. Your test is flawed. You talked into the on board mic from 5 feet away and when you talked into the NTG2 it was on a boom on 18 inches to 2 feet away. next time place the NTG2 next to the cam 5 feet away. this will show a better comparison.
I understand but the point of the test was to show the effect of the sound as the ntg 2 would be most idealistically positioned for best sound on a boom pole with vocals. The beginning waterfall tests show the clarity differences in the ntg2 and the onboard mic with the same positions away from the source.
do the same test as in the waterfall test, stand 5 feet away from the cam and use the on board mic and speak into it. Now place the shotgun mic (NTG2) either on the cam via shock mount or mic stand , but make shre it's right next to the cam. now stand 5 feet away and speak in the mic. If your run and gunning it, you won't have the luxury of a boom operator. this will give you a realistic compairison
Why are you so nervous? Relax dude!

@studioolympe From what I've noticed, the quality is slightly better using the 48v phantom power.
