A very noble effort. The music you have used though is the second recording of "Southern Rhapsody" not the original which would have been used during these monochrome days. I believe Southern Television was always written as "SOUTHERN TELEVISION". Apart from those two minor points you have done a really excellent job.
Does anybody remember one of the 'time-burning' shorts that Southern used to show about a woman driving to the sun-drenched mountains with her two children, just to hang up their washing?
How I miss those days when everything was real (because I was so young no doubt?) and TV had GOOD programmes running.
I think this was called Southern Star. Being now 47 years old, my sister and I used to gallop around the coffee table when we were seven (me) and ten (her), to this music.
Saddens me to think about how much older I am now, but makes me smile at the memory this music conjures up. I think this must have had some direction on my TV and later cinematography (aerial) career. Sigh!
I remember this - I even remembered those cows grazing in the field, and the gate. I was looking for this - thank you! I was also about 6 when this was on.
Thank you for finding this original music. I got goosebumps just listening to it. Wonderful memories. It was a real occasion waiting for the first programmes of the day to start back then. Thank you again!
i remember before proper programmes came on there was often some programme about an exhibition place with all these modern ideas or something, a world fair or something. All i can remember was that the building looked like Liverpool RC Cathedral and there was an electronic swimming frog that went 'bosheep'.
at last the real music, tried to find this for years, have a copy of richard addinsell version on a cd but not the same as the tv one. sadly missed tv station, meridian was never the same. as i lived in totton we didnt want to watch anything from brighton . happy days, now i have to put up with points west on the bbc but the itv west or htv as it was is frightful cheers
Richard Adinsell Conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1958, but they did re-record over the years. Station only closed because of politics.
Recently, I was delighted to find the title & composer of this music (Southern Rhapsody by Richard Addinsell), solving a 40 year old mystery - somehow this music has stayed in my head for all those years. I have heard the recent recording which sounds great, but for sheer nostalgia this original recording puts me straight back in my gran's living room late 1960s-early 1970s sitting in front of her Ferranti TV that had to be switched on 10-15 minutes before the programme started. Many thanks.
I also remember this piece of wonderful music sitting in front of the television at the age of four. It was never forgotten. How this has been found is beyond me but thank you for bringing back childhood memories.
I remember the music and images so well; it took me right back to the early 60s. After school I used to sit in the front room waiting for the start-up of Southern Television with a cup of tea and some biscuits, happy times. Thank you thecaretakerswebsite for putting this on You Tube, I will have to show this to my sister.

The theme tune is wonderfully clear and crisp;not like the muffled version you got on old mono tv's!

Excellent sequence with the correct version of the music.
One minor point: The logo at the end should be animated, including the words,"The Station That Serves The South".
