"OMG Senna is a legend! I bet *insert personally disliked modern day driver* would just drive on if they saw *insert personal favourite modern day driver* crash horribly!"
"The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. No, the true measure of a man is this: how quickly can he respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give.
Ayrton was a status symbol back home because of his success, but I think it was moments like these which made him a demi-God in Brazil. He clearly was a good person, but he had that slightly darker side when racing wheel to wheel with a title contender - as all truly great racing drivers must have to be as good as they are.
Some of the comments here are a bit ridiculous. Some people seem to think that Senna was the only person who's ever done anything like this. Obvious examples of other driver's are Brett Lunger (Niki Lauda's accident), David Purley (Roger Williamson's accident), Mike Hailwood (Clay Reggazoni's accident). There are many other cases of this sort of thing happening before and after this accident. I'm not in anyway saying what Senna did wasn't great, just that others have done this sort of act too.
@l33tnobody1337 the good ones always die first because the crooked ones always try to take over. Because there are more crooked people than good people in this wicked world!
Videos of events like this show us the bonds between humans at the highest level. Nobody who has seen it can forget the images of drivers rushing to help their fellow competitors. Watch the Lauda crash, Villeneuve's crash at Zolder or Jacky Ickx rushing to the aid of Bellof in Eau Rouge at Spa. One can only read about Jones, Prost & Mansell striving to get Elio DeAngelis out of a burning Brabham: 3 World Champions risking it all for a fellow driver.
@hejjagedu back in those days there wasnt enough track safety, and not enough marshals (because it costed to much money) it was only after senna died that they realy started to improve safety for the drivers
@hejjagedu C'mon , would you let a person drown at the beach just because its the lifeguards job to save them? This was the bond that f1 drivers have that made him help, not knowing if the car would catch fire or not the marshals sure seem a long ways away.
@Blade4613. Senna often did! LoL! Always on his case - stewards, FIA, FOCA (aptly named!). Especially JM Ballestre (mean, but hilarious). Had so many suspended warnings/fines.... LoL. Last 2 were @ Imola for jumping over the medical centre fence to be with Barriichello and visiting the scene of Ratzenberger's crash without permission. Did Senna give 1? No.......
Ayrton was not the cold, hard machine often portrayed by the press at that time. He demonstrated this kind of gentle humanity often (not many other drivers did - or do!) - not only this crash of Comas's in '92, but Donnelly's at Jerez, Spain '90, Barrichello Imola '94 to name a few times. Heroic. Iconic. It's purest Senna! A truly great man.
@LUV5S3NN4 Yep, also nice to know is that after his fatal crash an Austrian flag was found in his car to commemorate Roland Ratzberger who crashed just the day before. Respect!
Not only the best driver, but also shows unmatchable sportsmanship! But sorta questioning why he decided to park his car THERE... isn't that right in everyone's way? O__o
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he caused MORE of a problem by stopping right ON the track creating an even BIGGER road block for the cars to get around. then what was he gonna do? really? hes not a doctor. what the fuck was he gonna do to "help" ????
@TheEgg185 He saved Comas' life by keeping his head in the right position (upright) so that the blood could flow properly. Otherwise, it's most likely that Eric would have been in a more critical position.
@TheEgg185 It had been Senna who saved Comas' life at Spa in 1992 after Comas had a terrible crash at the Blanchimont corner during Friday qualifying. Senna jumped from his own car, ran over to Comas, shut down his engine and held Comas' head in a stable position until the doctors could arrive. Excerpt from Wiki. Say all you want, but that session was going to be stopped anyway.
This was how Ayrton was. He warmly greeted every new driver welcome and rushed to their help, but if the didn't move over within a second when Ayrton wanted to overlap them, he knocked them around in the pits. This man was half angel and half devil.
Senna fought tooth and nail for better safety, even minutes before his death. Not only did he help this guy, but every driver in Formula one thereafter.
@Jamesanaut It is very dangerous to stop an F1 car on a racetrack... Safety has improved hugely since the days of this video and after a crash like that, the car would be surrounded by marshals in seconds. Any driver stopping to help would do much more harm than good and put everyone else's lives at risk.
@THEMAN080 Dont talk down to me, thats beside the point senna could do almost nothing to help, he couldn't pull him out of the car so he could just go and stand beside it it was thought that counts the idea of helping someone else
this guy is awesome, just watched the doco about him. he is an amazing driver, his skills are ridiculous for the lack of electronics back in the day.
@finishembird, he got rorted and if the pole position was on the correct side there wouldnt have been an accident because Senna would have been infront.
Running in front of a taxi to get to work on time is one thing, but running in front of a Formula 1 car during qualifying?! Even when it's slowed to avoid a crash, holy crap! What a guy.
@finishembird Yeah, what a saintly guy Ayrton was, if you ever see his documentary you will see just how nice a guy he was and a true champ as you say.
Senna beat Prost in McLaren twice (although Prost won on points in 1989 and helped by Balestre). That is Alain Prost, a 4 time world champion, and he was already the most successful driver of all time with 28 wins (Jackie Stewart had the record of 27 wins in 1973) when Senna became his team mate in 1988
Senna beat Prost, the best driver in the world
Who did Schumacher have as teammates in Benetton and Ferrari? Verstappen, Herbert, Brundle, Irvine, Barrichello
Senna was always a bit odd. No problem with deliberately trying to take his rivals off, but always the first to attend to an injured driver. (And the caring stuff obviously wasn't done just for good PR.) A heart of gold stone.
A very good man, and a very great racer. Heart of gold, and good sportsmanship to help a fellow driver. We miss you, you will always be remembered as a legend, may your legacy live on in the F1 racing world.
