Feynman became one of my heroes several days ago. I had an epiphany watching the "Fun to Imagine" interview (look it up), where science clicked in my head in a way it had never done before. Not the entirety, just a very small part of it. But, it was so simple, so perfectly explained, by such a person who had clear passion for it, it just....fit in my mind. And, I dare say, I'll never forget it.
Richard Feynman is my personal hero. If I were a more talented writer, I would write a film about his life without making the man into Indiana Jones, which is what Hollywood is doing now... A true shame.
Nature turned out a part of herself which could describe far better than some versions before and boy did she pay attention when she did so! ...wish I could have met you when I was kicked out of physics in high school for messing around, even though I was passing my exams. Ooops
thank you for comipling this video. I have enjoyed watching and reading lots about Richard Feynman over the last year or so. I really started when I wanted to find out more about the nature of light and Feynam has reignited my enthusiasm to learn more about this place.
Most people did. He was a very rare combination: childhood genius, courageous, passionate, witty, an outstanding teacher and speaker, safe-cracker, bongo-player, womaniser at times (yet almost suicidally loyal to his first love who died of TB 6 months before there was a cure).
At the Jewish funeral for his father, before hundreds, under immense pressure, he wept as he refused to read from Jewish scripture, because, as he told the priest firmly, his "pop" didn't believe it and neither did he.
@philhellenes wow, what an amazing man, will definably read his books, first time i hear about him, but what a great man. Why aren't people more like this? That would be a wonderful world indeed.
That was totally epic with this guy doing the jungle drums. Awesome. Cool bit for you phil. Guys like you, Pat Condell, and Amazing Atheist are my heroes. It's like the torch being passed on. Psychedelic
Overrated and overbearing. Good at calculation, bad at fundamentals. Wonderful phenomenologist, not so good a theorist. Doesn't even belong in the same room as Dirac and Einstein.
"You can call this hero worship... I call it gratitude."
I have felt INTENSE gratitude many times while watching youtube videos posted by the likes of philhellenes, Thunderf00t, and patcondell (to name a few).
This guy just goes to show, as did Einstein, that the very best thinkers are the ones who think in simple, sequential steps. All of his answers were so incredibly simple that their complexity built in my mind as I heard them.
... His points were .zip files, basically. :) What a great man.
Beautiful video. I'm happy that someone else shares in my awe and hero worship of Professor Feyman - a great person, a great thinker, a great paragon of science and reason! What a marvel of humanity itself he was and a wonderful mix of communication skills and brilliance. We'll miss you professor!
I find theoretical physicists to generally be the best philosophers. Quantum physics in particular offers us such an absurd reality that one cannot help to wonder, and to wonder, is philosophy.
"He who has stopped wondering, has stopped living." -Albert Einstein
This may sound absurd but I feel lost without this man being alive. I want to direct all of my questions to him. I'm not smart enough for physics but im smart enough to realize just how much I'm missing out on. Thats such a horrible position to be in.
I think you'd be surprised by how much you'd understand if you dig into some of the good physics popularizations there are. neither of us may ever "do" physics, but we can see the picture from afar and appreciate it to some degree. Imagine being born in the past, before there were ANY answers. For the curious, THAT would be the horrible position. :)
Most popularizations are not worth the paper they are scribbled on. I'm totally convinced that popularizations do tremendous harm by filling people's heads with whacked out bullshit (brane worlds, wormholes, time machines, and on an on - it's all complete bullshit).
Some popularisations by some people who should know better ARE awful. But the ones listed on my channel can't be that bad because I don't believe in ANY of the things you mentioned. Those things are, imo, bullshit.
I sense you are trying to get a reaction from people and stir their anger. Don't be TOO obvious about it. It looks clumsy. Try more subtlety next time. And yes, I know you'll be back. ;)
No not trying to stir anger, but the "cult of Feynman" must end! He's to some extent responsible for it himself. Don't get me wrong he deserves a lot of credit for QED, but it's a bad fundamental theory with no solution is sight.
Oh yes, Dick DID blow his own trumpet on occasion. But too many other physicists of note were happy to call him "genius" for it to be all hot air. Perhaps you might consider reading his private correspondences ("Perfectly Reasonable Deviations From The Beaten Track"). The ego was more persona than personality, I think.
If you love physics you should not object to personality "cults" that draw so many to actual physics and who inoculate minds to "woo-science". There are MUCH bigger problems.
Barf - you'll never learn anything if you go around making such lame excuses. He's just a man. He was a good calculator. Even he had trouble with the actually hard problems, which he failed to solve as surely as everyone else. QED is a horrible mess, QFT is worse, cosmology is nutty, string theory was always insane and is now dead (fortunately), gravity still lives alone. There is a lot of stuff to work on. Feynman did one good thing - showing how to get numbers from a broken theory. Cheer up.
Richard Feynman: "I don't have to know an answer, I don't feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell - possibly - it doesn't frighten me."
Very enjoyable video. He was able to convey information in laymen's terms. That is true genius in itself! "The truth is so much more remarkable!" This man had a passion for life. Thank you for posting it Phil.
Please consider that idea "un-fucked". Post if you're happy with it. Newton is not one of my heroes (though I greatly admire his intellect). His arrogance made Feynman appear meek by comparison. Einstein will always be number 1 to me. What he saw, revealed and ushered in, was nothing short of the intellectual transformation of the Universe.
I've read 3 biographies, 3 books of collected essays and lectures, 100s of the letters he wrote to various people, and watched several hours of documentaries featuring him, but I didn't know him.
"I think that it is much more likely that the reports of flying saucers are the results of the known irrational characteristics of terrestrial intelligence rather than the unknown rational efforts of extra-terrestrial intelligence."
I wish I had known more of Feynman when I was coming out of secondary school.
Consider the bright minds we are cheating by failing to offer an alternative to the primitive and meager awe-feelings of religion... the smart young people who will come to think all adults are as shallow-minded as the religious.
Proof the being a real Dick can be a good thing! He reminds me of Professor Julius Sumner Miller, also a physicist, who was one of the most inspiring teachers I ever saw.
Ahhh!! You used my favourite ever Feynman quote about belief in UFOs being more likely the result of human irrationality (for which there is ample evidence) than the result of actual UFOs. That is the best summary of metaphysical beliefs I have ever heard. I also love his quote after investigating the Challenger disaster, when he said "for a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations; for nature cannot be fooled" - that puts "thou shalt not lie" to pitiful shame!
I've read Feynman's biography, and I have to say, he's an extraordinary human being. Nothing is more entertaining to me than a man that he had to lie about his identity, so that when he gives a lecture, only other physicists would show up. Two years ago I had never heard of him. Now he's my hero
Oh, thank you for this philhellenes. I'm a huge Feinman fan, and I have not seen many of the clips you've shown here. Love Feynman! I really love his analogy of science being like watching a game of chess in glimpses and trying to tease out the rules of the game from these glimpses, with each new theory being a more inclusive one than the last. A true genius. Thanks Phil!

Nice compilation (and glad to see you put a bit of Hans Bethe in there--another great guy).
I never imagined I'd be saying "I love Dick."

Love Feynman! I really love his analogy of science being like watching a game of chess in glimpses and trying to tease out the rules of the game from these glimpses, with each new theory being a more inclusive one than the last. A true genius. Thanks Phil!
