It's most unsurprising that the always unashamedly posh and mushy Myerson, loved the first part of the film - a repressed love story set in a big country house.
I do agree though that the part set in the war does lose my interest and feels a bit inconsequential, with that masturbatory tracking shot serving no real purpose other than an aesthetic one.
What is the woman in pink going on about lol! I mean i knew straight away that the 3rd Briony was in fact Briony on first glance. Heck she had the same hairstyle among other things that screamed Briony at you.
It's like they draughted the lady in pink last minute to review the film despite the fact she cannot grasp the three act structure of the film and relevance of characters. BItch, talk about what you know! You obviously don't know what you're on about!
Ha! Well, Ms. Pink Dress lady, I've read the novel too and I've had no problems identifying the 3 Briony's in the film. And I know a lot of people who read the novel and they got why the war scene was there. Sheesh!
yes another complaint about the lady in the pink dress.
You don't know who the later woman is? well let me think...hmmm author...writing books, talking about her book, and her sister...umm...umm...could it somehow be briony. Plus the fact you dont knwo who she instantly is adds so much!
Yeah i thought that was very dumb of her...also when she didn't get why the war scene was there..i was like..god...isn't the contrast between him being in the war instead of being with Cecilia enough?...and i read the book. I also thought the confession in the end was great..and hardly anyone would be the same at age 77 when compared to themselves when they are 13 or 18!!!..very huge gap!
That's not what she meant. It was more about her not feeling that she sufficiently 'knows' Briony 3. In the book the 1999 section is much longer and revealing.
I've got to laugh at the lady in pink, asking of the Dunkirk scene: "But what is it for...?"
It is 'for' showing the utter desperation of tens of thousands men who were trapped between the Devil(in the shape of the German Army) and (literally) the deep blue sea.
Does the woman know anything of British history and the formation of what became known as The Dunkirk Spirit.
As for the film, it's a British masterpiece and probably the best I've ever seen.
I think what she meant is what does have to do with the story..but still taht stumped me too..and that said after she read the book too..how weird is that?
the pink woman decided to be critical from the very beginning. the host asks weird questions as well. i liked the men better, they had nice opinions, and they explained things well.
and this must be one of the first times someone hardly talks about keira or her performance.
THEY SPOILED THE END! Ehmagod, don't watch it if you haven't seen the film yet.
Interesting discussion. I disagree with all the criticism though =). It's bloody brilliant, let's leave it at that! Also, does anyone else find it funny that they keep referring to Robbie as James McAvoy? Ie, James goes to war, James falls in love with Cecelia - lol.
Christ Almighty, Paulin looks like he's about to top himself. With good reason.

My intellectual input is as follows:
I'd defo bang Julie Myerson. She's well hot.

Some insightful contributions. But what exactly is the substance or importance of Myerson's 'viewpoint' critique here?

There's many reasons for the war.
The main thing that springs to mind is would Briony have written atonement had Robbie not died in the war?

Not true. At no point does she exhibit any such ignorance - let alone 'obviously'.

They've just started to show Newsnight on BBC World, but, if this is the level of debate to expect, they should think again.

what does she mean by "why was is there?"
its the reason they get seperated....and she says she read the book?
Something tell me shes a bit silly.
wirelessaxis 4 years ago
Isn't prison (or rather Briony's 'sin') the reason they get separated? She makes a good point!
MaximisedInsight 3 years ago
It was Briony's sin. The reason being is that he wouldnt have been in prison if Briony hadnt lied in the first place.

Great Atonement review! I've seen the film, and it's a wonderful adaptation of McEwan's masterful novel.
