wow! thanks for making my job easy...watched every video for this song. the time you put into this and the in depth look of how he plays it and the delay times...fantastic man! thanks for providing this on here and sharing your knowledge. big thanks!!!
@CreweMan142: On the Axe-Fx, it was amp to cab split to two delays in parallel to reverb. Shimmer was in a third parallel path to the main signal for the bridge preset.
It's not easy with the amp models like the Axe. I used a FET boost into the amp model and tried to drive the amp model with a little grit. You have to experiment with different boosts or you have to adjust your amp on the verge of clean and breakup, then when you play harder you get some grit. Also, you need to use a blue Herdim pick backwards like Edge does to get that chime. Edge plays with the end that has dimples on it and it gives a "scratch" tone. It's key to U2.
How much distortion do you really use? I can't get that great crisp sound that you get with your guitar. I only use a Spider III 15 watt amp. Do you have any suggestions on how to make it sound more like the edge's guitar??? By the way your videos are great!!! :)
Hi. Great tutorial!. I am studying it, and got pretty far. I play my guitar over USB/PC and use Ableton Live Intro for all the effects. Poor mans solution, but works fine. Only the shimmer is hard to get correct. Should be possible though. Saw your setup in tutorial no 9. I use the same set-up, but did not get a good shimmer-effect yet. Q: would you be willing to publish the exact settings of the delay times, octaver/pitch (if that's applied) and reverb for this specific effect? Thx !
@U2GuitarTutorials Thx4 speedy answer. Yes, I have seen alle the parts. Very helpful 4 setting delays correct. But my Q is aimed at how you create the shimmer sound, treated in part 9 only (check ?). At approx 1:40 min in the video you show the settings. My understanding is that the upper line in the Fractal-display is the set-up you use to create the shimmer-sound. But perhaps I misunderstood that part and the shimmer is something that comes ready-made out of the Fractal-box ?
At about 1:30 I show the screen shot. Shimmer is multiple delays at the same time at different time settings. The MTD is a multi-delay block that mixes four delays together to give you a smooth string like tone. The MTD also pitch shifts it up one octave to complement what you are playing. It then filters out the extreme highs with the filter block and lots of reverb smooths it out even more. I think I show it on my WOWY vids also. So bottom path is shimmer.
Dud!!! , I can'T tell u? so great, dead on... I have an American strat and an AC30!! I' just started experimenting w/ a Boss dd7 with tap pedal. Can't thank you enough!!
first song i learned with my delay dd3, it isnt the greatest with dotted eighths but at least its something, ur wicked man

That is Arcade Fire's "Wake Up." Search on YouTube and you will find them playing it live. Awesome song.

Hi Michael,
Thank you very much for your dedicated video about the shimmer.
I do not have an Axe Fx, I will try to build a shimmer with effects on Ableton Live with plugs-ins. We'll hear...
Good to hear you will do WTSHNN integral.
Bye

Thanks for the tutorials. I've really come to appreciate the Edge as a guitarist by learning how to play the songs and you've helped tremendously.
